Sherwood Schwartz passed away recently, but I can still ask without guilt, when has that name EVER been associated with QUALITY,on any level? As usual, sympathy goes out to the cast.
why is it sherwood schwartz had the corniest shows on TV? well, i guess a LOT of producers would love to have that kind of lasting effect on television!
@ivegotalongdong I think Sherwood Schwartz came up with most of his ideas in his sleep, thinking they would make him money (how about this idea for a show, yeah--that's the ticket!) These are the sort of things on TV that would later be lampooned by Matt Groening on The Simpsons (remember the concept for a show where grandpa Simpson got lost on his way to heaven? I'm surprised Schwartz didn't think of that idea first!)
Jeez! That looks like a hunk of crap, especially since that fat faced bullet head kid who looks like someone microwaved John Denver too long is in it. He was the one that destroyed the Brady Bunch around this same time.
I remember the song and the starting but not the premise. No surprise then when watching The Golden Girls years later I DIDN'T say, 'Hey look, there's Big John!'
American Saturday morning television in the mid to late 1970's (all three networks) was and still is some of the most avant garde programming in the history of the television. A Golden Age that we will never see again!
One thing I noticed is that NBC didn't really go along with Peggy Charren's school - on - Saturday agenda as much as the other networks. They'd have the occasional PSA about eating fruit & vegatables, but they didn't (as far as I know) have shows that were infiltrated with lessons.
BIG jOHN appeared to look OLDER THAN 40 here! I always wonder why US TV insults the viewers intelligence and casts older in younger pretending that we don't notice.
@XMARINEmax I was six when I saw the show in England, and the age of forty seemed prehistoric to me. Now I'm only a few months off being forty myself, I look at this and think I'm not doing too badly!
lol hahahahaha or if he ever was fingering his young girlfriend and then turned back into big john hahahaha get him on the sex offenders register. so many great potential storylines. not like the shit they churned out.
ive been looking for this for years my old vhs tape snaped . and the funny thing is i find old film and tv . just cant get hold of this for some reason
yeah, we used to always get american things quite late in australia. including ads. the result was that i grew up thinking of the u.s. as ten years behind the rest of the world in fashions of all kinds!

Gosh where was I when this show was on? I grew up watching all the 70's Saturday morning shows but don't recall this one at all.... anyhow thanks for posting, I love all these old shows and remembering the times.
Thank you! I had remembered this show from when I was a kid, but I have never met anyone who has even heard of it, over the years I started to wonder if I had made it up, they played it here in Australia in about 80 or 81, good to know it actually existed
Robbie Rist didn't destroy the Brady Bunch. That show was on its last legs when he arrived. Cast members admitted that. "Sanford and Son" was killing them in the ratings Friday nights, and Schwartz told ABC he didn't want Robert Reed back as Mike Brady. Rist just happen to arrive at the worst time.
Big johnson little johnson, sounds a bit suspect, or did I missread the title? nearly as bad as that other 1970's perverted show about that well endowed grisley bear, genital Ben.
NOOOOOOOO!!!!! I though I had dreamed this in a childhood nightmare, the chmaltzy tune, the crappy tells a story lyrics reminiscent of the Beverly hillbillies, and that horrendous kid with the bowl haircut and the piggy eyes, looking from side to side in unconvincing surprise, and now you have rekindled the memory, your evil!!
Yes. I knew Herb Edelman from this show long before I noticed him in The Golden Girls, The Bradys, The Good Guys, and even as a burglar in an early ep of Happy Days.
