  • wonky pronunciation

  • i can make that sound with my mouth and computer just learned??? i feel special

  • They should do this with games.

  • @pieboy651 lol

  • Why don't you just fucking record it?

  • @Musiphonix Games, this would be awesome... All those sound loops that make games sound stupid... like the raining sound effect in most games is just shhshshshhhshsh looped.. so after 5 min you hear the pattern and it annoys the fk out of you. With this, it could be infinitely different.

  • @obeyance The sounds would have to be pre-generated, as real-time generation of sound like this would take insane computing power (and several thousand lines of code).

  • @Musiphonix Well AMD created a 32Gig processor back like 5 years ago. The technology is out to be able to do it. And i never said this should be implamented in games coming out this year... But this is the future... You did ask...

  • @pieboy651 I did

  • wouldnt it would be alot easyer and cheaper just to record the sound???

  • @BinghamVlogs Think of video games where the sounds match up perfectly with un-scripted interactions.

  • You know what I hear....cooler video games.

  • cuz we'll totally need this in the future

  • @mexas4life It's us being humans. Doing it because we can.

  • @Theevilonemwhaha yea but instead they culd be makin hoverboards and other stuff, stuff i want! :D

  • @mexas4life ive still not heard back about that flying jetski... 8-)))))))))

  • @mexas4life of course and we need that!! Or else how are we gonna survive? :P XD I'm pretty sure that if I don't here that dropping sound i'll have a bad day!! :D XD

  • @kickit246 Oh snap!

  • Computer generated sounds are new! I always knew there was something wrong with the sound of my Soundblaster 15 years ago. I probably was fake and done by a builtin tape!

  • @mszs Im guessing youre not smart

  • /watch?v=kdJK1tfHthc

     Amazing Video...

  • awesome

this is what ive thought about adding in video games instead of using wav sounds

  • You will still need a lot of processor capacity since it would be complicated microscopic behaviour.

  • @IronFist3007 I don't know how practical that would be. It would be really complex to create all the code in order to make this very short sound. It would be a whole lot easier to just record the sounds, and it wouldn't add all that much if you did do it. just saying.

  • Okay yes, BUT ...

if I computer makes a sound like a falling tree in the forest, and no one is around to hear it, did it *really* generate the sound ??

  • it does generate the sound (waves carried by the air), and if there's no one to hear it.. well... it won't be heard that's all...

Did i miss the point of your question ?

  • lol for some reason that made me laugh shallowthoughts

  • i hope this feature will be implemented in future video games... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • As a video game programmer, so do I.

  • so why don't YOU do it ?

  • Heaps of reasons, but mainly because it would chew up the CPU. You'd have cool water but no power left for anything else.

  • I don't get it, so if somebody else implemented it, they wouldn't have these problems ? :-S

  • they can creat the sound, and not just use a already recorded one. they did that by simulation. you know all the sound in the 3D movies, in video games, in simulators are pre recorded and people are just reusing them. but with that technic, they was able to CREATE the sound of water by simulation!

  • The matrix comes to mind...

  • to what degree though.

  • they need to add random probability for realalistic effect. Do you think so?

  • i think if you can mimic the sound of liquid (water) with a computer, then we could communicate with the entire universe

  • That will help out a lot to make renderings more believable. I hope this will be made into an application. :)

  • application: replicate the sound of a bitch speaking with a mouth full of cum.

  • so sadly accurate

  • how we should call this application?

    :P

    lol

  • now, that is some attention to small details!!!!!

  • It's not useless. If you put it in animated movies or video games, instead of making sounds of using foley artists, you could have the ability to generate basic sounds that were synced up to the animation/screen in real time... picture a running stream in a video game (you don't see any) and then consider it could realistically simulate the sound depending on where you were in relation to it.

  • Jimmy is right. Technological advancement always predates exploitable purpose. Many things which seemed trivial in the past, such as Xerox's GUI interface for copiers simply took time for their inherent value to be recognised. Shortly after Bell invented the telephone, Western Union remarked in 1876 that "The telephone has too many short comings to be considered as a means of communication."

Maybe you should subscribe to Fred the Comedian, thermodynacist, might be more up your alley.

  • I like how there simulating a sound that's really easy to just record. How about simulating the sound a tree makes when it falls with no-one there to hear it.

  • ah, the old 'does a tree in a forest fall if nobody hears it' enigma. The answer is that it does fall, the proof is the forest itself. it exists, not a block of solid wood made from undropped trees.

trees must drop for it to be a forest.

    QED

  • Other way around - "If a tree falls, and nobody's there, does it make a sound?"

The problem being that you can't prove it either way, because no-one was there to hear the sound (or lack of it). Of course, it's a moot point, because it doesn't change the fact that the tree falls over.

  • If one is attempting a statistical model of audible tree events then consideration of trees being eaten by termites before they get a chance to fall; is advised.

It also occurs that if trees could not lose energy as sound when they fell, then they would have to deform as they touched the ground, rather like soft latex, so as not to fall too quickly either.

or they could fall into specially prepared beds of soft material.

one would have to check to be sure, then there is likely to be a long wait.

  • what if you leave a recorder near the tree ?

  • That would be the same as having someone close enough to hear the tree falling - the main thing is that the sound can be observed. It's more of a thought experiment than anything - the obvious answer is "yes it makes a sound" but there's no way to prove it definitively. Not an issue for things like trees, but when you get into Quantum physics, things get a lot messier...

  • Phew m8 I dont even know WHAT Quantum physics is.... i only know its supposed to me messy

  • It is. Very messy. Thank goodness you don't need to know it for engineering...

  • nobody was inside the computer when that water drop made a sound

  • daaaaaaaaaaymn

  • cool, useless, but cool

  • would be pretty cool to have stuff like that in computer games

  • fair enough, they should apply it to games music, now that would be an improvement

  • Thank You !

  • this is wicked beyond awesome!!!

  • Awsome, im self planning to become a video game programmer ^^

  • wow, I can see computer games in a few years from now :)

  • HOLY...

    FUCKING....

    awsome!

    :D

  • Science isn't only for helping humanity. Anyway I understood that you're an ignorant with all the games that you play.

  • that is quite a breakthrough..... -_-, soon they'll be able to simulate me taking a piss.

  • I think they did...

  • @kickit246 Not really. A true simulation would take odor into account, and no computer is capable of that.

  • bullshit

just record the real thing and put it in

you can edit sounds to make new ones

    this thing is POIINTLESS!

  • That should help for new games :)

  • How can that help?

  • something like this could help for things like video games or movies in the near future to save money and time rather than going to get a recording of certain sounds for effects in a video game/movie that's how this could help

  • not really, its nowhere near as cost effective as recorded sound and probably more strain on the game engine. it's probably going to have some kind of engineering applications (bridge, submarine design maybe)

  • why, they could just record the REAL THING!!

  • how about a revolution in the music/movie industry. Gaming industry would not have to take others sounds anymore but make their own. Tweech the way they want. U gonna tell me that they already able to tweech it, but it would give them more freedom. Or we are just heading to a terminator/matric world. IDK...

  • tweech...............

  • Exactly

  • to simulate sounds that aren't easily found in nature?

  • I have never noticed the difference before, but cool.

Btw, what's wrong with her voice? I cannot hear anything wrong.

  • Oh great more StarGate sound effects! XD

  • this is the future of video games!

  • for what. ??

  • if u ask me simulating water and its movements is the holy grail of computer graphics.

  • i think that would be interessting for the video gaming industry

  • I have no problem with her narrating these videos.

  • Would you like some cheese with that whine?

    She's ok.

  • if think they could continue with sparks, broken bubbles, falling and breaking things, chemical gass production and probably fully parametrizable farts :) i guess photorealistic simulation of water will be part of five minute exams once...

  • Can they master the acoustics of farts. Call me.

  • What's the point of this?

  • good for realistic virtual reality

  • The point is that they were able to deduce the sound of water from basic physics. The fact that the sound was so realistic indicates that acoustic modelling has become quite advanced.

As a technical achievement it is impressive. As for the practical applications, well know that we have established that acoustic predictions of this sort can be quite reliable I imagine there would be applications to design where e.g. you can figure out what an instrument would sound like before you build it.

  • know => now.  :(

  • they just said, to get more realistic sounds of water

  • The point is they can do it!

  • producing a cleaner more realistic sound, may be able to help future space explorers, by producing a calming sound , such as a babbling brook.

  • This might seem useless, but these type of simulations can come in handy in new techonlogies...I just don't how... :P

  • WOW tats great but wudnt it b cheaper to just record the sound of water?

  • No. It'd be cheaper and easier to implement an algorithm that generated the sound dynamically based on the setup of the water simulation you're running in your game/visualisation/simulation/whatever, so that if you change the water properties around to improve the simulation you don't have to go out and record a new sound or remix the old one.

  • Maybe they can use the physicengine of the modern graphiccards to generate the sounds..

  • did you just make up a word? you mean sound card right? :P

  • It's more likely that they used a computer cluster.

  • ya but recording a sound very little how much people and time youd have to invest to start doing that think about it in the real world and didn't even sound as good as the real drop

  • In horror video games would be awesome :D

  • I SO predicted this!

  • OK we all want this in video games now.

  • Procedural sounds...

Certainly sounds like an innovation in video games!

  • let's see this in videogames

  • I was thinking the exact same thing would provide some amazing realism and immersion.

  • It's not bad but the one on 0:25 doesn't look very realistic...

  • And the point of re-creating the sound of dripping water is....

  • It can be used in video games for more realistic sound effects

  • That's what I was thinking.

  • It's totally awesome and badass.

  • @misssxcgirl1995: What a retarded thing to say

Whats the point of simulating anything...

  • STFU!...go to hell,i was ja=st wondering because i dunno if you noticed but theres something called the ozone layer bieng destroyed, mabe scientist should be attending to that first!!!

  • Why would computer scientists be good at solving the ozone problem?

Are you one of those morons who think all science is the same?

  • no i dont acctually ( im doing tripple science for GCSE-so go figuire)...

  • u fail

  • Please excuse me. I just see so many comments from idiots who think all scientists do the same thing. They think they can all just work on curing cancer or solving

  • quantum mechanics as if medicine, physics, computer science, biology and all other sciences are just the same thing.

  • or... since the people doing this are acoustic experts, they could solve problems relevant to their expertise, computer designing acoustic materials and devices so they can be "heard" even before being built.

The ozone layer has already been solved, as far as is possible, by banning ozone depleting propellants and refrigerants. It will take a while for the damage to be reversed, but there are other concerns in the world besides ozone, many more pressing.

  • thanx.

  • Use in video games to create dynamic sound effects on the fly? Instead of out a can like they are now. I could see it being used the same way physics simulations are.

  • Scientific research doesn't need a point other than increasing knowledge.

  • cool
