@monstrosity987 if you really gotta ask about the price, then you can't afford one. But one on super sale would run $800 while a highway robbery would run about 1,200$. E monthly cost of owning one runs about 250$ depending on your bird ability to tear up toys and make messes.
@Izenith1 No they're not... Yet. But due to illegal pet trades numbers are declining fast. From 1994 - 2003 it was reported 350,000 were traded legally across the boarders from the wild. However this does not include illegal sales, smuggling and the ones that died in transit which can be up to double that figure. Added to this, parrots mate for life, so if an adult is removed from the wild, the mate will commit suicide from greif (this is all parrots incuding macaws) so they are... (cont.)
@EvilRosewood currently listed as "Near Threatened" and are close to being on the red list of threatened birds. as a result of the suicides in the wild there is a very high chance that for every adult bird sold from the wild, another bird has died as a result. They commit suicide by flying as high as they can and closing their wings. The only reason they don't in captivity is because they can't fly to the sufficient height due to house/cage restrictions, so (as is apparent when it's... (cont.)
@EvilRosewood They're such a wonderful birds....so intelligents and beautiful, and I was so touched about the way they commit suicide when they lose their mates, I hope things change...and they won't be listed on the red list. I'm from Panama and we had already lost the macaws, there aren't macaws here due to illegal trades and illegal hunting, are there any organizations taking care of the african gray Parrots?!..I hope so
@Izenith1 Um, only every wildlife and wild bird charity and association going!! But of course, they can't be everywhere at once but the rate at which the numbers are dropping is steadily slowing thanks to these charities and no I'm not preaching or anything- I allow others to make their own choice. I donate myself as the work they do is clear and it's helping :)
Everyone...he isn't dead. o-o This is their bird. "Alex" the famous bird was Dr. Pepperberg's. He died in 2007. This was posted in 2008. This Alex is alive. And very cute! :3
Whats it like having an African Grey Parrot? I've been thinking about getting one for quite sometime now, but I just want to hear from someone who has one. Like, what is an average day for a bird like that?
@Redsfancoop Depends on what kind of parrot you're asking about. I don't know about african greys, but I know macaws can outlive us by a fairly good bit.
@HumeAnnoyed it cannot be 1978 because if you compare the quality or the videos of today's cameras and the 1978 ones, you will see a huged difference. This is taken by at least year 2002 camera. My father has videos from 1997 and they are still using tapes, there were no cds at that point of time, and the tape's videos quality is at least 2 times worse than today's ones.
&& because of how long they live for, I honestly think they'd make better "children" than a dog would. You know, for women who can't have children.
I've wanted one since I was in anywhere between 2nd-4th grade. I saw one at PetCo named Ellie, && I fell in love with her. I've also never seen one cost $6k, either. All the ones I've seen they want a little over a thousand for them.
@PARSNBY wow is it really that expensive in your country??? Where I live, these only cost around $600 and around a $1200 for the handfed ones which talk very well.
i'd love to have a parrot since they're beautiful birds and have some what the ability to talk but they so dang NOISY!!!!! (my nieghbor has one, you can hear it loud and clear from the other side of the street)
@AlexBirdieBird have any suggestions for getting your conga to speak ... my conga's name is oscar...we got him at the age of 9 ..and have had him for 5 years or so... he used to talk a lot, but a few years ago..he stopped talking, and only says a few actually words now... and noises for the most part...we still love him, but i would just like to know if there is anything we could do..and that he is okay...

@EvilRosewood mate or owner leaves/dies) it releases it's greif in feather pulling or not eating.
So no, they're not threatened... Yet. But at this rate they will be easily in the next 5 years.
