He can take as long as he likes to finish A Song of Ice and Fire just so long as he does not die before it is done, like some other authors i will not mention.
GRRM wrote a note at the end of AFFC (published 2005) titled "Meanwhile, Back On The Wall..." explaining why AFFC only tells the story of half the characters, and he expects the next book to be out "next year".
"Next year" kept getting pushed back, and GRRM was good at first about keeping fans updated on the progress. Now all we hear about are ASOIAF merchandise, conventions, & football.
It's doubtful ADWD will ever be published prehumously.
Don't pull a Robert Jordan—finish the book, George.
Yes yes.... GRRM owes us nothing but it's been 10 years since we have new stuff about Jon Snow, Tyrion, and Daenerys and 5 years since FFC. Can't blame us for feeling a bit impatient. Good lord I was only 15 when the series came out and now I'm 29. God.. time flies. So yes, he ain't our bitch but he's sure taking a hell-long time to finish it. ;P
Unless, you know, he dies first. Then we'll all be disappointed. Until Brad Sanderson comes in to finish that series, too. And we'll still be disappointed if that happens.
Too true but I can honestly say this was some of the best Í've ever read and I'm dying to hear more. I'll be waiting excitedly for as long as it takes!!
While I would be very upset if a writer I enjoyed reading simply chose to stop writing and leave a series unfinished, I can accept that the author has no direct obligation to finish a series regardless of how many fans he has (excluding the possibility of death threats).
I can take solace in the thought that if an author chose not to finish a popular series, they're also choosing not to get any of the money that would come with the book sales.
@ShaiGarENTP The Bible is nothing to be scoffed at though. That is one incredible work of art, especially the Old Testament. Also, it was written by dozens of people over 1000 years. GRRM is only one man telling one story in one lifetime. The reason he's taking so long is so that he can keep up the high quality of the series despite the drastic changes he's been forced to make to his original plans for it.
@smthssarmour I just hope he doesn't die before the books are relased, if i had known the series wasn't finished i don't think i would of started it, haha, my fault,

I think at least some mention of Neil Gaiman is in order, since it's from his blog that the artist of this song got his words from.

@frightenedsoul Yes indeed. Nail Gaiman is always the source of awesomeness.

I've been using this song as a mantra for a while now.
It doesn't work as well as I wish it did at convincing myself to be patient.

@Samasnier With the HBO series coming up, I'm certain George will have ADWD ready so he can make massive profits.

GRRM doesn't owe me anything . . . if it weren't for him, I wouldn't have ASoIaF to read, period. He can take as long as he damn well pleases.

No, he's not, but it cuts both ways. GRRM has got to realise that it's beginning to look like he's taking the piss.

@smthssarmour Yeah, and do you think you could write anything nearly as complex in as much time and have millions read it and love it? ;)
