  • bloody awesome!!!!!!!!

  • Class!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • not good enugf

  • wow perfect

  • the song for next....summer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!ye

  • Manics need to sort their shit out, hardly design for life is it? The The cover songs... sigh

  • friendship like this almost doesn't exist nowadays in showbiz...

    poor richey, but still remembered.

  • I was so thrilled when I heard this on the radio! The The are amazing as are Manics, not only did this amazing song get a rebirth but it got a truly fantastic one!

  • 2:31

    song?

  • no matter what you say the Manics have got their own signiture sound, instantly recognisable, this is a great song and just proves what a great band they are. What was going on in the 90's? I'd like to see a band from the Noughties still releasing great songs this far along!

  • THIS IS THE DAYYY

  • Personally I like this - it's not meant to be taken hugely seriously, but it sends you to Heaven and allows you to reflect on their sparkling career, just like this video does. But I think we can all agree that Manic Street Preachers have made some fucking FUCKING great music that should always be remembered. They sit comfortably next to any other musician/band in the realm of fine music, and although they won't be releasing any more singles, I hope they continue to release more kick-ass albums.

  • I think it's impossible to hate the Manics. Truly mainstream appeal.

  • proud to be welsh <3

  • Not bad, but it's not even CLOSE to the brilliance of the original or the "That Was The Day" version

  • Great cover of a great song! Nice clip too :)

  • I love this band! They were amazing last night :D

  • steve kean out

  • I love the manics. But when you look at them, they looked so mis-matched. Nicky and Richie were so 'glam', James a proper 'bloke' and Sean so timid looking. Yet despite their differences they gel so well. You could just imagine if a group with the look of the early Manics ever went on a show like the X Factor the judges would be like, "I just don't get it?", "The public will just not get what you're about..."

Just about 30 more hours 'til I see them live for the third time- can't wait!

  • @katrinarozel The O2? See ya there!

  • what year did msp do this?

  • @Mancheguache it's a new song made for their 2011 singles album.

  • Gary Speed - big MSP fan - R.I.P (almost as cool as Richey!!!!!)

  • The original one is from THE THE aka Matt Johnson isn'it ?

  • @letoff29 Sure is. This is a pretty good cover though

  • @letoff29 Yes.

  • Prefer this cover: it's like it's more emotive... The words stick more.

  • nevíte kde ji stáhnu..nikde ji nemuzu najit :/

  • an extremely underated band

  • @TOMSTAN100 u didn't notice them getting REALLY BIG a few years back?

  • @mundusabsurdus They could still be bigger, it's a disgrace when you think about it.

  • LOVE THE ORIGINAL ONE, LOVE THIS COVER!!!!!

  • Times have changed... The Manics have changed.Yeah it's different, but whenever I hear a new Manics song I am never disappointed, Here is the proof!

  • @PeeledApples these times are ripe for songs with lyrical meaning.....like manics used to make with richey edwards before he went missing

  • this made me cry.... i love the Manics

  • Most comments miss the point - this isn't about comparisons. Listen to the words, even watch the video. This is about the day.

  • Better than The The in a band sense and a song sense too.

  • Original was dark and gloomy, this however is very upbeat and a great pop song. 9/10

  • @jameyinegypt oh come on, there is nothing dark or gloomy about the original. it just had a slight touch more melancholia to it, which for me made it emotionally deeper and more real.

  • originals better, but covers are always fun to listen to

  • Comment removed

  • yahh msp always fantastic.

  • brings tears to my eyes watching this.

if you know where we come from down in the valleys you'll know what i'm on about.

    the manics are legends.

  • @MrPaz73 good call my friend, hope richey saw this vid wherever he is now, peace and love

  • This is a very nice tribute!!!!

  • This is one version that, as we say in portuguese, "não destoa"... I prefer the original song, but Manic are Manic... I love Manic version of the Umbrella, and I don't listen to rhianna (or whatever her name is) :)

  • Musically good vocally they've ruined everything that Matt's song stands for.

  • Come to Sweden please!!! preferably Stockholm. I promise to go to the your gig ..

  • JDB one of the greatest vocal talents to ever come out of Wales. And his guitar skills are immense. Manics are a top band.

  • I like the Manics version, it's got a cheery Britpop quality to it. I quite like the original too, even if it sounds like a poor man's Joy Division

  • Really, not very good. Except the occasion bit where they stop singing and you can hear something that they decided not to fuck up.

  • They should never have touched such a beautiful original :-(

  • They have ruined this song, the original is far better.

  • Fan of both versions

  • How can anyone actually enjoy listening to this murderous cover.

  • I fucking love both versions! errone stop hatin!

  • Amazing cover. The original's... shit, really, but I love this version.

  • what was a horrible 80s cheesy song made worse i just have one question.......why...??????

  • @morvanian in the words of the manics... why dont you.. just FUCK OFF?

  • @worldwidefreeride92 i did as you say "fuck off" it still didnt sound any better matie

  • @morvanian 'cachu bant' is another one

  • @morvanian For memories sake and as far as "cheesy 80s" songs go this isn't very cheesy at all its just vocally strong.

  • Please take 5 minutes to read the article on 'This is thethe day' @ thethe dot com

  • i prefer the the's version....

  • respect to them for keeping the the remembered

  • True to the original. But to say this is way better than the original is idiotic! "to be honest" :) btw.. my Dad saw the Manics play Blackburn in Feb '92 and did a head count of 42 people!!!

  • tip top, cover, move with the groove mindwarp???? u 2 lib and dream on??? if you had one of the big kids out there who would turn la tristesse durera into this day and age, it would be a club anthem? wont beat the orig, i know but ??? hey

  • brave to cover THE THE but its great ;))

Hope it leads to a greatest hits tour make my 2012

  • Listened to both versions and it's amazing how they both put a different projection into the lyrics - Manics have it coming out as a vibrant, forward looking anthem and The The's original has a wholly different more melancholic retrospective tone. (Though that might be the vibe of the time).

BOTH songs have merit and detractors of the cover need to get their toys back in the pram and go back to sleep :P

  • This IS The Day !

  • Should have left well alone, fucking ruined this song.

  • mi ez a szar ???

  • Richey Edwards: Gone but never forgotten.

Love ya mate....you changed my life

  • way better than the original if i'm honest

  • Horrific cover version - and the only bad song the Manics have ever actually produced.

  • This is a fucking abomination. Crap cover of a fantastic song.

  • Ta piosenka w październiku była wysoko na listach przebojów w Eska Rock

  • Not that there's anything wrong with James and Nicky but Sean has always been my favourite Manic. Imagine having so much to defend/talk about and just getting on with it almost without comment? Best thing if you ask me.

  • great song in my opinion, and a great passionate cover by the world's best band. I don't see how you can hate on this: the performance is great and the song is well written. RIP Richey and for the record, if you're out there still, you should be proud :)

  • I dont know the original. This sounds ok but nothing special. Not even as good as There By the Grace of God.

  • What a luagh they had no band now adays has that chance to fuck around and truly rock like smashing guitars its really shit that.

  • If I was in a fucking cool band I would want to record a fucking cool song. All of you doubters should fuck off. This is a great cover.

  • i love it, but it makes me so sad because of remembering Richey. I miss him so much!

  • Just heard this on the radio, thought it was some X factor muppet, and very shocked to find out it was the Manics

Terrible cover of a classic !!

  • a travesty .. a kitsch rehassh of one of my favourite songs

  • great cover, sad in a way to see Richie in the video, still believe hope & pray he is alive and well and at peace with the world where ever he may be

  • My life story must surely change .love this great !!

  • Cover versions at the Manics' time of life. Deary deary mate.

    Awful.

  • awful......................thethe is the one.

  • The best band ever!

  • i've almost forgotten how much i miss richey. and it's kinda weird to miss someone i've never met...

  • @xstickyflowerx bit of me wishes and hopes he is still alive and living a peacefull life somewhere

  • Love the Manics but this is just wrong !! Some tracks should never be copied and TITD is one of them.

  • Not a bad attempt MSP,but your not gonna top matt johnson and THE THE

  • Best british band in the last 20 years without question. awesome live!

  • I'm not quite sure how a song originally recorded with violin and accordion in the early eighties can be tamed by electric guitars. The original was gritty, angst ridden and had a very powerful theme about failed exceptions in life. This has lost all of that, it's glossy and unimaginative with a poor video. The manics should be better than this but looks like they are just going for the money. Try listening to some music with a real message for a change rather than this pretend emotional output.

  • This is a The The song.....Matt Johnson its a great version though...I had for got all about it....

  • Ah, this certainly put a tear in my eye. The day I heard about the Manics from a random Welsh bloke in summer camp was definitely what changed my life and made me into the person I am today. Beautiful!

  • oh dear

  • Perfect!!!

  • An excellent song - ruined by the Manic Street Preachers!!

  • @TheClairef29 i don't think so

    manics are way better

  • Great cover, can't beat the original though! x

  • I'm a big manics fan, but I have a hard time defending them these days. Releasing a cover version as a single is maybe the last nail in the coffin, that and appearing on strictly come dancing - And no Nicky, a band such as the Manics being on strictly is neither subversive or dangerous, its sad.

  • They've ruined a classic and perfect pop song by The The. Expected better from the Manics

  • Just to confirm ( as i was asked) the original was by "THE THE" i.e Matt Johnson and was from the 1983 album "Soul Mining", There is a great remix on a subsequent hits album. And for anyone who took the hump because i think the Manics version is average; it's just an opinion, I am a Manics fan too!

  • Awful.... why ruin a great song!

  • not many people know its a cover :( poor the the, amazing song though! great cover

  • It's sounds like soundtrack from 4400, main theme. Amanda Abizaid - A Place in Time.

  • The song is good, the video is even better, brings back lots of memories :)

  • I think they made a good go of it but it's not a patch on the original. Can't see why a band of their stature needs to do a cover like this?

  • @Iclimbthereforeiam Watch or read the interviews they did about it. They dont need to do a cover of it, they wanted to.

  • @Iclimbthereforeiam i remember the original who was it that sung it again ?

  • one of the most beautiful bands in the world!

  • Brilliant Cover - Love it!!

  • certain songs shouldnt be covered , this is one of them. Manics are a good band but this is terrible

  • Perfect day ,good job guys ,it's kind a silly thing but I cried a lot with this

  • nice video. is this song on the new compilation album?

  • suddenly everyone is a the the fan. the the were fucking shite and this was their only good song which has been improved about 72% by the manics. The manics are the greatest british band of the last 20 years

  • @PompeyLegend2009 Ooer..! Who rattled your cage..?...oh..by the by Mr Superfan...arnt they from Wales...which would mean they are Welsh...? Calm down cock face...lololol

  • @martainmiller you dont even like the the you're just trying to slag the manics off. Oh and last time i checked, being welsh is being british. Oh and as for calling PompeyLegend2009 a cock face, maybe you should check your channel before making gay insults because for some strange reason there is a long paragraph in depth about how you've been sucking some guy off! lmao.

  • @Libertinedreamful "being Welsh is being British"...? I would love to see how long you lasted out in the valley's shouting that one. As for making "gay insults" i must ask when as i cant recal making any homophobic comments. As for comments left on my channel i have little control what others wish to write or as to content, much the same as having to put up with your inane presence at this moment in time. It does, however, amaze me how you appear to know what i like in a musical sense...

  • Comment removed

  • @martainmiller You've gone from acting insulting and common to trying to be a know it all using a wide vocabulary to make you look smart but its not going to work .Being welsh is being british, half of my family is welsh and theyll tell you the same thing. Also on every version of this song you have posted the same comment about how they 'ruined this song' Plus you was on here 3 weeks ago as Martydea99 slagging them off again, so stop trying to be smart and go bother someone else

  • @Libertinedreamful Well well well, it must be the half Welsh in you thats making you get all wound up so ridiculousy easy. "Insulting and common"?..me!?. Just to clarify. Wales is not in England. England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales are all countries that form the United Kingdom. If your from Scotland your Scotish, Northern Ireland your Norther Irish, English if your from England...and guess what.? Welsh if your from Wales.....look at a map...and calm down, its not your fault.

  • @Libertinedreamful Ive been toying with the idea that Richey Edwards made himself a time machine and saw this cover rearing its ugly head way back in 95...that would explain something of his disappearance to date. If he is actually deceased one hopes he left himself enough space where he lies to well and truly turn in his grave as turn he surely would.

  • @martainmiller have a look at a map mate, Wales is in Britain therefore they are British. Well done for trying though.

  • @PompeyLegend2009 Scotland is geographicaly connected to England but go take a journey to Glasgow on a Saturday night, or any other night and tell the population they are British and see what reaction you get....likewise a trip to Wales. Any how, it still doesnt excuse a totally awful cover...apart from them being Welsh.

  • @PompeyLegend2009 It would appear the 'greatest British band of the last 20 years' don't share your view. ;-)

  • Shockingly Shite !! Some things should be left alone as you just set yourself up for a fall

  • sorry but this is one of the worst covers i have ever heard !! lets hope people now appreciate The The alot more . Manics you really shouldnt of bothered !!

  • @RaveReunited

There are (for me) one or two of MSP tunes which are absolutely brilliant - A Design For Life and You Stole The Sun Love - and they always bring a grin to my face when I hear them. It's a cover - sure - and whilst not as good perhaps as the original by The The I have to say I did quite enjoy it. BTW if anybody liked this and hadn't heard of The The before - one of their best is Uncertain Smile - with an amazing piano solo by Jools Holland. pemsan45 has a live version from 1993.

  • Mining finished up in Wales a long time ago...then along come the Manic's searching for 'soul' ...'and squeezed all the juice out until it ran dry'. My 'uncertain smile' is a most definate frown. Why, with such obvious talent cover an already 'perfect' song and become just another symptom of the morale decay thats gnawing at the heart of the music industry..?

  • Rubbish compared to The The version - sorry guys

  • I love the Manics. Don't get me wrong. And this is a great effort. Its just that Matt Johnson's original is just too dam good.

  • @SuperFlyingzebras i'd be crying too if someone covered one of my songs better than i did it

  • This cover just has no soul!

  • This is brilliant..love the original, love the Manics, love this song..

  • great cover...manics are legends....the The are not.

  • I should think Matt Johnson is crying his eyes out at this! Oh very dear

  • A very poor cover

  • If you think they should have called it a day after motorcycle emptiness why the fuck are you still watching their videos.....

  • this is great cover!

  • Sorry but this is a lame cover version

  • One of the greatest bands of all time - so proud they are Welsh

  • Oh hell yes.....god save the manics

  • awww richey :(

  • Wonderful image compilation, song not that wonderful (I never like The The anyway) Well you can argue about wath the Manic St Preachers were and are no more, if Oasis filled more stadiums than the Manic or so, but you can't deny their powerfull history, their unique sounds during the 90's and their unique ideology. I've never herad about any other band that have done wath they did in Cuba, just see them side by side with and important part of the history at 3:42 So Viva MSP!!

  • Any predictions on how the album will do. Sadly I doubt the new national treasures album will give the band an overdue no 1 album. The greatest hits made no 4 and they seem to have a thing about no 3 but I reckon this album reach no 9 and spens six weeks in top 75.

  • @SugarFreeRecordsUK :

Who are you- Alan Partridge? You claim to be a HUGE The The fan yet you prefer THIS? You also claim that The The only became 'incredible' AFTER Soul Mining?!! That's like saying you preferred Leo Sayer's version of 'I Am The Walrus' to The Beatles'. Or that the Beatles best album was 'Greatest Hits'. Incredible...

  • Best band in the world by a country fucking mile. This is not the end.

  • I love this but the original is still the best. more nuanced and balanced. Matt Johnsons vocals are better. Love the vid

  • I'm a HUGE The The fan, but I think this version is better. But then again, I'm not a huge fan of either version, The The (or rather, Matt Johnson) only became incredible after the album this song is from.

  • An absolutely SHOCKING cover of a truly great track by a band who really need to stop now before they completely ruin their legacy. I heard this unannounced on the radio and was seething at what a horrible X-Factor/ greetings card pile of crap it is; soulless vocals, wallpaper backing music. When I realised it was the Manics my jaw nearly hit the floor. PLEASE... don't record ANYTHING else.

  • bless the manics, turned a dog awful song into something i cant stop listening to, as ever, pure genius

  • @MrMattreed77 Your ears must be the wrong way round mate- I'd go and get them seen to.

  • @agsupermags nothing wrong with my ears fella, or my opinion. your more than welcome to yours...

  • @MrMattreed77 Yeah- "Bless them" is about right. At least their Mums probably pretend they like them.

  • thought that was the Bangles in your pic :)'

  • I like both the Manics and The The but this doesn't work

  • How could they do this to such an amazing song, bastards, i'm off to puke my ring up... shit off

  • @martydeac99 what they just made the song better!! The manics can make any song sound better, because they are the best band around.

  • @Golfclub02 no no no... The original is one song that shouldnt ever be touched, its the early morning song, its The song that has to be played after a really heavy night, when you get home just as the sun is coming up...There can be only one..

its put me off The Manics

i might like them again one day but they've crossed the line with this

  • Great Video, please don't say its the end of manics

  • Aww! Best compilation video EVER! Makes me smile every time I watch it :) Hope the Manics aren't going for good, there's so much more they could do! I cried when I read they might be waving their goodbye in NME, but at least I'm going to their gig at the O2 arena in London on 17th December-can't wait! :D

  • god i love this Band, bloody awesome!!!!!!
