I feel completely stable with that close stance. If I went wider, I would need to place my hands further apart too. I don't want to do that.
BTW, Vince Anello, one of the best deadlifters in the world, along with plenty of other old-school pullers, hoisted huge weights with that type of stance.
I used to do almost a sumo stands and I would still grip outside of my legs, it was not a problem until I got into the 500lb range, after that it would put too much stress on my shoulders, now I am using a complete sumo stands. From your video I can see that you can move your legs a part more and still be able to grip the bar the same way, its ok for your hands to touch your legs as you lift.
@MattmanAZ09 500 at 180bw and 6'1", but I actually went back to regular from sumo, and my feet are closer together. I have watched Konstantinov and adapted a lot of his form and technique
Hi Max. Looking good and you're getting very strong. If I may make one suggestion. A very good coach suggested to me that I use a closer grip on the bench and I immediately got a few extra kilos. You have a very wide grip, but as a raw lifter, you don't benefit like a shirted lifter would. Try using a closer grip for a few sessions and see how you like it.
Yes, but the better leverage more than compensates (at least for me). You have nothing to lose by giving it a try. At worst you'll triceps will get a little extra work ;)
Hard to say. I suppose that varies individually. The forearms should be vertical in the bottom position. With a standard PL bar I have my little fingers just inside the rings. An inch inside on an OL bar. I'm a little bigger than you are.
Seriously though, you've improved a ton and you looked great. I've never seen anyone deadlift with their feet that close together but it might be something to look into, I guess.
Thanks. I still have work to do, especially with the bench press.
That deadlift stance was more popular in the 70s, with people such as Vince Anello using it. He was a true deadlifting freak, so there must be something to it.
No I don't compete at all, cuz if I did I'd be in the heaviest weight class (I'm almost 300lb at the moment). Basically I used to be super fat and I want to be as strong and muscular as possible, while losing fat and studying for my personal training certification. 8-)
You shouldn't wait until you reach a certain bodyweight or strength level, just try it. Who cares if you don't win at first, just get some official lifts in the books and improve from there.
Good showing at the comp. Get that bench up and you will be set.

What is deadlifting stands?
maxbm 3 years ago
c. To be placed or situated:
feet are so close together that u are almost falling over, I bet you could lift more if you at list stood shoulder width apart.
gatraw 3 years ago
That's what I thought you meant.

I think he means stance. If it works for you (500 raw @ 164) then stick with it.
yamanmustafa 3 years ago
also on that last lift you can actually see that your right knee was in the way
gatraw 3 years ago
@gatraw
George Hechter pulled in the mid 800's with a stance like that.
How much you pull?

Thanks for the tip, but doesn't the closer grip slightly increase the range of motion?

Yeah, maybe I will. How close though?

Do you compete in anything?

Awesome work, Max. Even though you missed your thirds, you picked good attempts. I like your style on the platform, as well.

Thanks, Noah.
maxbm 3 years ago
Great work, Max!
I think that with some smaller jumps for your third attempts you easily could have gotten more weight on all of the lifts.
Matgic1 3 years ago
Thanks, Matt. Yeah, like 420-240-525 instead of 425-245-530.
maxbm 3 years ago
that looked like a lot of fun.
thumbnugget1000 3 years ago 2
Yeah, it was. If you don't already compete, you should.
maxbm 3 years ago

The three 2nd attempts (400-225-500) were all meet PRs, but not all-time PRs.
