I'll add that you can also have different barrels. I've got a 24inch rifled barrel and 18 inch smooth bore. Great point about ammo availability. Here in Illinois we only hunt deer with shotguns so way more ammo around for it.
I told "hiberniason" the same thing, but if it TOTALLY hits the fan, the shotgunner will replace the machine gunner in the civilian sector just by the fact that he has 9 pellets that are equivalent to a .32 caliber slug slamming into the enemy at the same time! Then for longer ranges go to slugs, like you said. Good for 100 yards accuracy with the equivalent of being hit with a ball ping hammer travelling at roughly 1200 feet per second.
An SKS has pretty good power and accuracy, with lots of surplus ammo everywhere, and is extremily reliable as well as extremily easy to disassemble and clean. It's also cheap, has plenty of aftermarket customization option, and the rifles themselves are common as hell! Only downside is it can't be reloaded mid-mag very easily, but neither is the M1 Garand, doesn't stop people from loving the hell out of that rifle! Get the Norinco SKS-D that uses AK47 mags, perfect! Same round, more accuracy.
As long as you win. If you are surprised by 6-10 member unarmed gang and have lots of weapons, after you are dead they are now a well armed gang and all the people they kill, rape, rob and torture is on your dime. Me? Hidden firing pins (except for my carry one), heavy $50 trigger locks (can't be removed without key or heavy machinery) and 3" steel armor safe for all of it.
They can still capture you and torture you for the stuff, so have a clever plan with a hidden button that (you decide).
I issue everyone in the family an AK. Thousand of rounds down range, dozens of builds and never a hiccup. I have one gun Ive never cleaned and it works fine. We also have two pumps and 2 dbl barrels. I keep one DMR and a couple bolt actions for long range work. Everything is 2 calibers and 1 gauge. We also keep a few 22s for small game and utility. I dont really count rimfire ammo as having to be stockpiled.
I agree on the shotgun, however I live in the woods and hills in Southern Ohio and I need more distance for some applications so yes I do have some rifles. Plus I have a CCW license and carry a XD.40 sub compact with me. I keep plenty of ammo for all guns. SKS is a good choice, glad to hear that you have one. I keep a MAK-90 handy and a .308 for going out further and to tell you the truth I like the Mosin Nagant that I have. Doesn't cost an arm and leg. You keep rocking dude.
@45calvet Thanks man. I'm glad I added the mosin to the mix. While I don't anticipate needing to reach out that far, I do anticipate having to adapt to things I hadn't anticipated...if that makes sense.
I agree that a good shotgun is an excellent choice for self defense and home defense, 12 gauge is very powerful and common place in society.
I would add, if one is looking for another long gun, anything that fires the 7.62 x 39mm round, AK style/variant or as you mentioned SKS. 7.62 is relatively cheap and common place..
@jaxzurr After getting a Ruger 10/22, I might actually advise that as a second long gun first. The ammo is very inexpensive and can be stocked up very quickly in bulk for just a few bucks. For $100 at Walmart you can get 2750 rounds.
Against just rioting hoards(not organized groups) I think a .22lr can be an extremely useful and effective defense weapon for a whole host of reasons. But I can't argue the good ole 7.62x39 rifle if that's the choice...
Agreed 100%....But both can be carried easily. I have a Benelli Nova 12 gauge, Type 56 sks, and ruger 10/22....best combo in my opinion due to ammo cost and dependability.
@UrbanCombatSurvivor i have said time and time again that a .22 is nothing to just discount as weak and powerless. unless your opponent is wearing kevlar tactical gear or is a bear it's going to do damage especially close range. the mafia loves .22 because its not very loud and doesn't make a mess. against a rioting horde I would use the 7.62x39 for the simple fact that you can kill/wound more than one with a single bullet. but if I dont have a choice a good .22 will do
@TheBigsteve2010 you mention mafia, but did you hear the story of when at dinner time at a restaurant, a guy walks up from his table to get a .22 snub nose from the bathroom, he comes out and shoots a guy eating dinner, 6 times in the back of the head, and flees the scene. the guy didnt die, in fact, not a single bullet penetrated his skull.
If youre going 12ga, why not load your own hulls? You can make a double punch duplex load. You can also crank out about 30 shells by the the time you could go and buy a box at walmart
The only misconspion you have is that buck shot will clear a hallway. A shotgun even with buck shot is still an aimed weapon. The best spread you could even hope for with a shotgun with a legal 18in barrel down the longest of home hallways(say 30ft or 10 yards) is maybe a 5inch spread or less. So thats 1 guy maybe two if you happen to get them hugging, lol. Now shotguns with rilfed barrels spread thier shot right away and is almost useless past that range.
@mojsmg Misconception on my part, or assumption on yours? If there is a breakdown, whatever would make you think I would have a long barrel on the shotty?
Also, this is for basic information, people with just about zero knowledge. You're getting into patterns and the like, and I find it somewhat fruitless here.
For basic info, yes, a shotty with buck will clear a hallway. Even if someone on some other website disagrees, unless they've shot down a hall at people, it's all conjecture from them :)
@UrbanCombatSurvivor Whoa, dude I'm not here to bash you. I thought you said "if anyone has info let me know" And I still wouldn't saw off the barrel on a shotgun durring a WROL due to the fact you'll lose alot of your range with slugs & shot/buck rounds. Sawed off shotguns are very specific weapons made for clearing room and such. So you did say you have 2 of them so I geuss you could do it to 1 of them. You should still shoot a shotgun as an aimed weapon 1 target at a time.
@UrbanCombatSurvivor Sure can, I didn't even think about that, it's just 1 screw.
Over the years of hunting in Wis. I've seen shotguns jam. Most of the time it's caused by whats called a short stroke which jams the empty shell against the the one coming from the mag. I've also seen shells expand the brass so much it gets stuck in the in the barrel and is hard as hell to get out. Just some data points I've pick up on over the years of hunting I've done.
One nice thing about a shotgun, is that if some scumbag breaks in to your home, once they hear you pump that weapon, chances are, they'll run like hell! That noise alone, is one HELL of a deterrent! LOL
@laney50w yeah dude ...had 2 such individuals try'n to break into my garage they heard that "shick-shick" of the pump and they literally ran into each other try'n to escape, which i let them...but i'm sure they heard me laughin my ass off...
i was watching this and was like wow this vid should have more views and then i realised that it just came out today lol love the vid and your oppinions got to love a shotgun
@iathking Thanks man. I'm still pretty new to youtube, I've only been doing videos for about two weeks now. I'm surprised I'm getting as many views as I am. I hope it's helping folks :)
I have a Winchester 1300 loaded with 9 pellet 00buck for home defense . There's an old saying about the good old 12ga "You can hunt everything from mice to moose with it". That means that crackheads fall into that range >:]
@kxdirtrider85 The magnums have way more kick. I was looking for plenty of power, with as little recoil as possible in case I need to use it for 2 or 3 hours defending against rioters or some such. The 2 3/4 shells are also by far the most prolific, so you're still good either way. I just didn't think the extra cost made sense for me personally
@UrbanCombatSurvivor o believe me ive shot them before and the recoil is ridiculous shot it outta my mossberg 500 which has a hoag (i think thats how u spell it i dnt fucken no) pistol grip and it nearly broke my hand almost dropped the fucker and i said the 3 inch magnum shell as a joke i kno its not practical for holding off a house for like 4 hours im runnin outta characters ill send ya a message
@lladnar71 Your 1300 will shoot those aguila minishells. I'm not completely sold on them, but had I known about them I might have looked for a 1300 instead of my 870
I just bought a mossberg 500,and all I shot so far is birdshot (first time shooting a shot gun) and I was surprised of the recoil, cant wait to shoot buckshot. Plus I have a glock 19,and soon a AR type carbine that shoots 9mm cal because it will accept glock mags. Great vid and good info, just like all your vids....
