@bucksby - I only got the first VCR in late 1980. I have a couple of episodes of TOTP from 1981 and many progs and clips from the years after that. Tapes were incredibly expensive in 1980 so I couldn't record everything I wanted to.
That HAD to be a Ronnie Hazelhurst composition. (referring to the ROTF theme tune). I often wonder what they played at the great man's funeral. The theme tune to Blankety Blank would have been perfect.
Always used to love the way those plumby oldschool BBC continuity announcers used to squirm as they dropped their H's when they said "It ain't 'alf 'ot mum"!
mmm, Give Us A Clue would do... although I rather doubt it would be a "festive" edition in October (thinks...a Hallowe'en edition, now that would have been fun!!)
So you were born on 23rd August 1980? My younger brother was born on the 24th - how's that for continuity.
"Rings On Their Fingers" isn't a programme I'm familiar with, although I would hazard a guess (based upon previous experience) that it's funnier than any BBC sitcom made in the last 10 years.
First VCR we had - a JVC - was in the early 80s. None of us talked in the sitting room while we were recording something as we thought the noise might end up on the tape....how stupid we were.
I got the first video-recorder in October 1980 from Radio Rentals. Tapes were £10 each in those days. The tapes have been stored in a spare room at a constant temperature and are still perfect 26 years later!
Blimey, a tenner for a video tape and I bet the recorder cost about £ 500 then. The first person I know to get a video recorder was in 1981 and we watched a recording of Jaws from the previous evening. Until the mid eighties a video recorder was a luxury good locally, my family bought their first one in 1986.
My secondary school bought a Philips one for £ 600 in 1979 and it seemed to record everything in green and purple. However, we all thought it was wonderful even if £ 600 was over a month's wages then and by today's standards the VCR would be primitive junk.
Yes you can tell just from the first seven seconds :-D And the really bad news is that it is the first of a new series (so five more weeks), there are only two other channels to choose from and many people don't have a remote control yet.
I got here because I was looking for "Rings on Their Fingers", any chance of the titles in full?

Great clip! I was only 5 in 1980. Did you ever record any editions of Top of the pops in those days?

what episodes from 1981 do you have. I have about 30 shows from that year.

I can see where the inspiration for Look Around You came from now.

Great clip voiced by one of the legends of continuity for BBC, ITV and B Sky B.

or LWT if its a friday, saturday or sunday.
AidanLunn 3 years ago
Well, the clip is dated Thursday (1980.10.23) according to RobinCarmody above, so my original comment still stands...
...had it been a Friday, and LWT was on, I probably would have endured Rings On Their Fingers after all...

Possibly be a festive edition of Give Us A Clue or a Carry On film... ...or even Only When I Laugh...

@Glenn1967ful believe it or not I think a Ferguson video-recorder cost about £900 in 1980. That's why most people rented them - including me!

Just a bit that was recorded in between programmes. There was no picture search in those days so odd bits often got left in :-)
