  • That´s a sick throw there! I think this is better than Bolts 9.58 at the 100 dash. But i think it´s impossible too compare these 2. They doesen´t do the same thing so it´s hard too say. (excuse me for my spelling) /swedish

  • cant find this with sounds/better quality?

  • Even if someone in a near future breaks this record (Doubt it considering Thorkildsen is almost 7 meter behind with his PB) he still has the record of 52 throws over the 90 meter line. Which is more than the rest of the throwers 90 m throws combined. I am only counting the throws with the modern javelin btw.

  • funny thing is, 2 years ago (when he was already retired) he threw 85m to show how to throw to his students ;D

  • @KevinFeder meh did they measure it? he threw an awesome 86.xx meters in 2006 on european champs, I doubt after 4 years non-pro training he would still be able to throw 85 :P

  • Anyone have any idea what present javelin throwers need to practise to actually reach up to Zelezny's level?

  • @Wint3rMetal focus on speed, flexibility and naturally and technique

  • Just wondering how long this throw would have been on the old model... Definitely over 100 meters.

  • @Canukki93 over 110m

  • uwe hohn was the best...

  • @OjoOro Uwe hohn was not the best, he threw with a different javelin. If Zelesny was given the same javelin, he would have thrown 108 m

  • I'm impressed by this man, but the record won't stay forever, and i hope and believe that Andreas Thorkildsen will break this record.

  • @Tiriltoget no one ever will threaten this...

  • @soulyrasheed It can't stay forever. No record does. Even Bolt's will be beaten at some point.

  • @Tiriltoget It's a lot easier to beat Bolts record (both of them...) than throwing the javelin 98.48m, you can do the math, 'we' are almost 10% off the world record mark in the javelin, that is an absolutely massive margin.

  • @Tiriltoget Thorkildsen doesn't have the potential to even reach 95 meters, nor does anyone else who is currently competing in the javelin. Who knows, maybe in 10-15 years we will see someone who has this kind of potential, it's rather unlikely but lets hope so!

  • Did I loved this man, very humble. I miss him.

  • for the americans, 323 ' and 1.16 ", holy shit!

  • The best! Uwe Hohn threw further but then popular/the best Bob Held Custom III javelin flew so differently. Modern jav is like a iron bar, goes up, comes down. The best guys today are still far behind Jan and Seppo who were the only men that went beyond the 96 meter mark, and gone over 90 many times. I hope the sport brings someone to break the 98.48 but I doubt that'll happen anytime soon.

  • DAMN i need those pants!!! :DD

  • The acceleration is fucked up.

  • zelezny means in czech "man of iron" and he is! i think nobody can beat that record!!

  • "jawdrop" wasn't he great!

Jan was one of the nicest guys in sports - his great rival Roger Davies was also his good friend - Roger said he was just such a great guy altogether that even though he did not want to make friends with his rival, he couldn't help it - Jan just did not have a mentality that could exclude people he liked and respected just because they were his competition rivals.

  • now Thats a record that will never be broken...

  • what is better? 98.48 in the javelin or 9.58 in the 100M? lets just say bolt is as good at the 100m as zelezny is at the javelin.

  • @TheDrewpdog 98,48m is better.. google it!

  • KIDS Seppo Räty is the world's BEST javelin thrower

  • @TheHoodyboyz You're just from Finland and think he's better. He's not even close

  • @santeenl it was just a joke, I do not know shit about the javelin throw

  • @santeenl it was just a joke, I do not know shit about the javelin throw and u are from norway?

  • @santeenl None is like Räty and Zelezny anymore! Don't know why. Both Räty and Zelezny are living legends. Uwe threw 104,80 world record and they changed javelin types in 1986. Yeah Zelezny is something really unbelievable though. I'm Finnish.

  • This record is unbeaten.

  • Tero Pitkämäki is the best

  • @kaukoohjainmies your must be kidding :-)

jan The Ironman is a best of alltime in javelin

  • Legends of Javelin!

  • amazing he threw it with that javelin,

    OTE Tailwind 80-90m javelin.

  • Zelezny is a legend in javelin throwing. The best of all time.

  • @Arska777999 The same mind i am too.

    BIIIG legend.

One of the best sportmen all the time as well.

What tougher place so better result.

These days Thorkildsen is similar sportman than Zelezny was.

  • even my grandma can throw better

  • @ledari your grandma can't even see that far.

  • @ledari haha good joke.

  • who wants to know taht you are 2 years and trhow 5000 meters?¿ that kind of people are shi*

  • its intersting that WR in Javelin is in Mens and Womens hold by Czech racers and more intersting is that it is a small county in the middle of the Europe with only 10 milions people xD in 6 milard world intersting xD

  • The full package of the moomin songs! h**p://depo*itfiles.com/en/files/vo3op0d2r

The * marks are t,t and s. Not a big package, only 85mb! Worth of try!

  • That's almost field goal post to field goal post on a football feild. This man's body is so uniquely structured to be able to hyper extend the limbs he does in order to throw the jav that far. Unbelievable, I doubt the record will be touched for decades.

  • I bet he's thrown further in practice...

  • @AlexFruen he didnt even throw actual javelins that much in practice. ill bet you he never threw farther.

  • He's the best. I vouch for the Finnish though, but he's the all-time best.

  • so about 323 feet and 1 inch... damn the record at my school is like 200 feet i think

  • @Astray71 american prick

  • @Astray71 feet? inches? FAIL

  • Awezome!!!!!!!!The best!

  • Gratuluje! Piekny wynik!

  • what was the previous record before he beat it? i dont follow this sport but im curious.

  • 95.66 (1993)also by him. Hohn threw 104m in 1984, but they changed things about the spear because it could be dangerous.

  • @shtdisturbance alltime-athletics com /mjaveok.htm

  • Honza Železný se nechal vyhecovat na treninku svých sveřenců a hodil přes 84 metrů. To je blázen bez treninku.

  • does anyone have another version of the throw?

this is the only video of the throw ive seen, and its in bad quality-

  • Phenomenon! He has 52 throws over 90 meters,and here 98.48,Respect!

  • No, this is already new type, with old 104,80 m (Uwe Hohn, 1984)...

  • @pepinhoo

    than*

  • förlåt gubbjävel :) dö

  • no u fail

  • Uwe sucks , Jan rocks foreva

  • Its the same javelin everyone uses these days, they might be good but Zelenzy was just a different kind of animal, what a beast.

  • Jan Železný je jednička !!! I kdyby ty oštěpy byly jiné

  • Back then they didn't use carbon fiber as they do in these days. Zelezny threw pure iron. And though he would use later carbon fiber javelin in Edmonton 2001 to thorw 92.80m.

  • You know what's funny? His name in Czech actually means "iron" :)

  • You're right. All these years I was misleaded by the Finnish media, that claimed his last name meant "steel". Zelezny was called "the superman" (it's translated as steel-man [teräsmies] to Finnish) by the media. It is indeed a little bit silly, that Iron threw iron.

  • Haha, yeah - not steel, "just" iron :) "Železný" is an adjective, we translate the Iron Man triathlon competition as "Železný muž"

  • @Rombous I was throwing with that Javelin today in Ostrava !

  • @Happyyz What kind of jav is it?

  • @santeenl OTE Tailwind

  • @Rombous

The world records were all reset in the early 1990s, because they were throwing the thing too far, and it was getting dangerous.

Zelenzy was the first real legend of the new design, but that doesn't mean he was any better than the old legends, with the old design.

UWE Hohn's original world record was 104 metres. And that was maybe 10 metres better than any other rival had managed.

They were all throwing mid 90s, like now. He was throwing 104!

  • @MrCeej9999 Noone is throwing mid 90s :$ They throw begin 90 on a good day.

  • @MrCeej9999

My young friend, the world records were not all reset in the early 1990's. The first year for the newly redesigned javelin was 1986, not the early 1990's. The primary change in the javelin was changing the distribution of the diameter cross-sections along the javelin in order to shift the center of mass forward with respect to the average center of pressure. The short of it is that the current javelin does not "glide" as well with respect to the older model.

  • @JAVMAN83

Also, Uwe Hohn's 1984 record was 104.80m, which surpassed the previous record of Petranoff's 99.72m (1983) by some 5.08m, not 10m. Uwe also had another throw of 99+m: likewise, Petranoff also had another throw of 97+m during those years that ended up convincing the IAAF that the aerodynamic characteristics of the javelin had to be changed. The result of that change are the models we have today.

  • @JAVMAN83

From a physics standpoint, the dynamic center of pressure is the location along the javelin of the summation of all the aerodynamic forces upon the javelin. The location of the center of pressure changes during the flight of the javelin due to the drag-induced reduction of velocity of the javelin, while the center of mass does not. With the old model (pre-1986), the center of pressue could stay in front of the center of mass (which is constant) during the flight.

  • @JAVMAN83

The result of this phenomena was that the angle of attack of the javelin (angle described by the difference between the direction of the center of mass during flight and the line describing the length of the javelin) remained positive when the javelin was thrown fast enough and with the proper initial angle of attack. This phenomena gave rise to the term "glider" javelin from how the javelin would seem to float forever.

  • @JAVMAN83

With the new javelin design, the center of pressure almost never moves in front of the center of mass. Thus, the javelin almost always pitches downward, regardless of the velocity of the javelin or the initial angle of attack.

  • @JAVMAN83 pre-1986? he set the record in 1996.

  • @F13RCE1

What are you talking about? My comments regarding anything pre-1986 was in reference to Uwe Hohn's WR in 1984 of 104.80 and Petranoff's 1983 WR of 99.72 and the fact that those world records were set with the pre-1986 model javelin, a.k.a., "glider javelin". We all know that Zelezny set the current record with the now current model javelin in 1996. Maybe you didn't understand the context of my statements.

  • @JAVMAN83 yeah i only read one of your paragraphs. right after i typed that i read the rest of everything you'd typed. felt stupid but didn't feel like going back and explaining my misunderstanding. my bad.

  • No... This is with the new one, the WR with the old one is 104.80 by Uwe Hohn of DDR (East Germany).

  • Pitkamaki is too unpredictable. Zelezny had the right form for his body. In fact, Zelezny was relatively smaller than most other throwers, at only 90kg and 6' 1". Pitkamaki would definitely lose if they were both at the same age.

  • Damn..

  • Any 1 know if that was thrown with 'current' javelin or was it with those older ones with vibration absorbers that are now banned (so called 'nemeth' javelins)

  • That's the new one. The record with the old jav was Uwe Holm who threw 104m

  • I think it is the new ones. The one he throws here looks like an OTE javelin

  • Holy jeezus! Zelezny is god.

  • *in practise this year*

bhh... long comments are too much for me :D

  • and in conclusion... :P

There has been lots of suspicions about the 80's where many of unbelievable records were done and especially in throwing events. But looking at Zeležny I believe he was clean. He didn't have short peaks, he was competitive for over 10 years and i have heard that he threw 84m in pratice this year!! So... great respect to him...

  • part 3 =)

All i say, there has been 9,7 runners for 20years now (although many failed drug tests) and that's why sprint WR-s are bettered so often, there alwyas have been guys who can pull it off. The whole other topic is long-distance WR improvement, also pretty often happening.

BUT in every throwing event except discus hasn't had close to WR results in 20 years. That means you can't compare these WR-s just like that. The evolvment of each event has been too different.

  • i guess this WR will probably be the oldest one someday, discus record might fall in next years.

Alekna got it very close (just 20cm short of WR) and Kanter looks very promising as well (only 70cm of WR). Today nobody has that stability to break 69...70m in every discus competition.

This pretty much means that somebody needs to be a very consistent ca. 88...92m thrower in javelin, i think. And then, maybe one very lucky throw passes 98m.

    Very tough record to break.

    ...followed

  • Comment removed

  • i love how he nearly clears the whole field.

  • Easily the greatest javelin thrower... perfect... even in slow motion his arm is still quick

  • The best!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Well I think you are totally wrong. Ofcourse he is a great javelin thrower, but if you see his WR when he throws the javelin, he aint got that much speed and does not throw that slight. Zelezny had a perfect throw, noone can match that in the next 25 years...

  • No way, zeleny is the best ever. Its going to be a long time before someone beats his WR. That 98.48m throw was better than Bolt's 9.69s 100m in my opinion.

  • it sure is, 100m records get broken every 1-2 years, this WR will stay for ever

  • You can't compare those things idiot

  • That is the fastest arm i have ever scene

  • one of the most unbreakable records in T&F

perfect motion angle and position angle and even wind condition,a good throw is really phenomenal

    birthdate of records

    javelin:1996

    disscus:1986

    hammer throw:1986

    shotput:1990

records about throwing are fkn long-living

  • but Gerd Kanter is going to cross discus world record in this year

  • the reason why all these records were set in these decades is because most athletes back then were on drugs and many of them were undetectable, but then again a lot of athlets these days are on drugs as well...

  • LOL now Czech republic = (10 milions people)got both WR in Javelin throw

    Men: Jan Železný,98.48 m in Jena (Germany)1996

    Woman: Barbora Špotáková,72.28 m in Stutgart (Germany) 2008 :D

  • You must be so proud of your country!

WRs in javelin throw, that's something!

  • I'm not proud of my country, I'm proud of Jan Železný and Bára Špotáková...

  • if he step to the line, im sure it will be 100 m.

    Nahum

  • Yes, long of whole throw is sure 100 m...

  • BTW ... they didnt change weight of javelin they just put the rope at javelin lower... im training javelin im from slovenia i throw 700g javelin about 65.70m and next year im going to EOF and World C.

Uwe hohn had old javelin and the real record is 98.48.. c'ya mates ^^

  • and that's absolutely correct ;)

  • It's so damn amazing.. the perfect throw.

  • actually he fell off to the left as he usually does he left some on the table , falling off to the left causes you to throw to the right side if he hit it perfect the trajectory would have benn a bit lower and the javelin landing angle less steep, but it is still a good throw

  • I can watch this over, and over again!

    Just fantastic!

Just imagine, Zelezny would have thrown the old javelin on to the tracks!

  • Zelezny is the greatest of all time both on medal count, world records and potential wise. The guy coulda thrown 100m+ with the new Javelin, and probably 110m with old pre 1985 Javelin.

  • well why he didnt throw over 100m

  • Dunno. People seemed to hyping up Seppo Raty and just thought I'd give a couple words for Zelezny's potential.

  • heyy..how about UWE HOHN from east GERMANY..???..he throw over 100 meters...he's make world record..104.80 meters..is that true..??..

  • Hohn's 104.80m was set before they changed the design of the Javelin.

  • This is official World Record after changing to new javelins (to not allow anyone to throw on track or so :P). Even trough this, Jan Zelezny was able to get very close to 100m.

  • All time greatest javelin thrower Seppo Räty said in the mid 90's that if somebody gives him 100000 marks he would star to practise seriously and easyly throw over 100 meters.

  • lolled. 1 WC gold vs zeleznys 3. 0 olympic golds vs. zeleznys 3... :< and zelezny threw 2 metres more with the current javelin model than seppo did with the old one. Seppo might be the 2nd best though.

  • Yes, Zelezny has more gold medals and the world record so he can be called the most succesful thrower in the world. Seppo's legend however is beyond any results in the known world.

Seppo was known as a man who would drink, smoke and womanize for 10 moths in a year, practice a month and compete a month and still always be on the podium. Seppo has also said that if docktors could rebuilt his injured legs, he would still beat the pussies like Pitkämäki and Thorkildsen after 6 moths training.

  • Isn't he into his 40s now?

Sounds like someone getting delusional, starting to believe their own myths.

Saying he'd EASILY throw over 100 meters sounds ludicrous, and if the sport itself wasn't interesting enough for him without money, why should anybody feel sorry for him?

It's always easy to say, 'well, he could have set world records if only he'd had a stricter training regime', but training the whole year through is just something you have to be prepared to do in order to make it.

  • but sport isn´t only abuot tallent, sport is abou tallent, discipline and and sedulity. Everebdy can say, i can do that but, a few of them have the same displine as the best champios

  • Hehe, Andreas Thorkildsen won gold now, 90,57

A supriser, Ainars Kovals, won silver with a distance of 86.64. The old world champion, Tero Pitkämäki, won only bronze this time, with the distance of 86.16 :/ Pitkämäki is imo better, he had just some back pains from training accidents ..

  • i'm sure your opinion isnt affected by the fact that he is finnish like you. -_-

  • well finnish javelin throwers ARE capable of far better results... too bad they werent at their best <.<

yes im finnish, but its true, they CAN throw better but then again so can many others..

    reply to azuredrama btw

  • Well of course?

  • now he works as a trainer and chairman in czech olympic association. Btw, he trains Barbora Spotakova, the girl who won the woman competition in Beijing with another amazing throw, 71.42m (New european record). The most exciting thing was the she was 2nd and has done that wicked throw in last attempt :)

  • You know why she won??? Because she went through javelin competition on August, 21 2008, exactly 40 years after Soviet ocupation beginning. She didn´t want to loose with russian challanger.

  • He's wicked sick!

  • Throwing long distance isnt all about huge build and power, its about finess and technique

  • thank you for stating the obvious

  • thats impossible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • I live very close to Jena so it's very cool that a World Record has been set there

  • lol, if u want see something awesome watch pekings olympic javelin men... Tero Pitkämäki show ya how to throw... maybe not world record but over 92m absolutly, this is fantastic throw, big respect to zelezny...

  • omfg now thats a throw ... :O long time ago i wanted to see this throw ...hope somebody maybe in Olimpic will throw about 90+ m ...and of course some from Latvia will throw 90+ m ... :P

  • Hahah sweeeeet nearly 100m and with that build...huuuuge respect for Zelezny.

  • uwe hohn set the record with the old javelin design which is easier to throw, this is the curent WR

  • yeah, but the system was changed. they BOTH are record holders.

  • and uwe hohn threw that "record" with old javelinmodel

  • shortly before jan threw his 98.48m the wind was measured at over 4mps at the triple jump. still no denying this was a great throw and probably will hold its ground for a long time yet

  • How is this possible, some kind of crazy winds maybe lol

  • it happened in 1996 mate

  • Jan Zelezny isn't the most large or strongest of the javelin throwers, but his technique is/was phenominal!

  • Omg, almost 100 meter :)

Thorkildsen and pit dont trow past 93 or something :P

  • hey thebob64 sorry to say but this was after the javelin was remodeled.. the record for the old javelin was 104.80 m thrown by Uwe Hohn

  • and thts y they changed the javelin!

apparently he threw it at 40 degrees....had he thrown it at 38 degrees he would have held a record of 110m analysts say.

  • spartans, this man has parts of hulk, superman, hercules cuz this aint normal lol. people struggle to make 90m in these times.
