Your videos really helped our group start playing, but now we have reached level 2 and are wondering about leveling up. Specifically, do you add the Abil Mod+1/2 level to the defense (which already has 10+1/2 level)? Or do you just take the Abil Mod?
Esper, I'd like to point out a discrepancy in your video and commentary. You stated that a 4th level Fighter trained in Athletics would have a +10 bonus to defence because of a +1 bonus due to half level, yet the write up said +2. That would make it a +11 bonus unless the armour penalty is calculable in the math. In which case, you failed to mention the number and have it written in the vid.
Esper I'm new to DMing and one of my players is a rogue and is new to DnD. And he asked a question last night while playing. The question was when rolling a d4 do you add all the sides up or not? Can you please answer this for me? Obviously I've never been a rogue.
Esper I'm new to DMing and one of my players is a rogue and is new to DnD. And he asked a question last night while playing. The question was when rolling a d4 do you add all the sides up or not? Can you please answer this for me?
Thanks! My problem is I'm a 13 year old girl and I don't even know how to drag my other friends into this... For one thing my school is all girls and I barely even know any guys that wants to play DnD. Oh, they don't sell the books here in my country. :( ---- sigh. I just going to play some solo campaigns then.
@blackbounty80 no its not real time ummm i read some where that like each battle is like 5 mins and sleeping is like 6-8 hours or something and each turn is like 1 min. i could be majorly wrong but thats how ive always looked at it.
@gr8sk8erdude13 Each round of combat is 6 seconds in the game world.
I'm pretty sure everything takes place within the game world. I've thought about calculating the time of day by just recording how long it takes to do certain things and advancing the time each round/action/whatever. Just to make the world a little more tangible. Then for outside encounters time of day can come in to play because it's actually calculated in a concrete way.
Thank you so much man! As a kid born in '90 I mostly grew up with video games and was never introduced to this. Now I'm 20 and a few older friends of mine (25-27) dragged me into D&D. I've been confused out of my fucking mind. Thanks for the help.
@thejman013 I've been playing video games since I first picked up an NES controller in 1984. They have had a really big impact on me, though not as much as D&D.
That's one of the many cool things about D&D- it appeals to all ages and types of people.
I'm 32 years old and grew up on atari, then NES (the one that came with the robot and gun) As the consoles progressed through the years, I played them all. Then I got into computer MMOs. Not until a few months ago did I get into DnD. Video games are still fun, but are like spoon feeding. Nothing compares to the "graphics" of my imagination and the partying with real friends, good music, and the ale that I brew myself. Cheers.

How does dual-wielding (such as a rogue dual-wielding daggers) affect your Damage roll? Does it affect your defences, accuracy, or anything else either?
just wondering....can you just sit there and spam at will attacks...I mean, is there any incentive to just smacking a guy with your weapon, or do you basically always have to use and at will...idk it just kind of takes the realism out of the game for me when my character can't just swing his sword but always has to swing his sword in THIS specific way to be effective.
@KeredRolyat My question for you is: why would a legendary hero of a fantasy world prefer to use a basic attack? A basic attack is the first, generic swing you learned when you were a young novice.
That said, you are free to use basic attacks whenever you would like, and they are used when making a charge or opportunity attack.
@repsesper I see what you're saying, and I agree to a point...a legendary hero would have some amazing types of moves and swings...however, think about it, which would you more likely see....a warrior swing a sword with a horizontal cross and following up with an overhead swing (two basic attacks) or the same warrior doing the same type of swing over and over again....I'm not trying to bad mouth 4e, I enjoy it, I'm just saying I wish the attacks were more ambiguous and actually had a limit.
@KeredRolyat I understand what you are saying, really I feel like if the players don't describe the action dynamically and to suit the situation, combat potentially gets grindy and uninspired. As long as we recognize that, we will be okay.
@AngelusLapsus66 Rituals are time- and component-consuming magic rituals that produce a variety of effects from enchanting items, to summoning phantom steeds, to teleporting your party across the world.
@Darkology123 I just track it as I see fit, what seems to make sense. The Player's Handbook has guidelines for things such as how far you can travel in one day at a given speed, and even the rituals say how long they take to cast. A short rest is about 5 minutes, an extended rest is at least 6 hours. Just utilize these and your own best judgment.
In my experience, when it comes to keeping track of time unless you're in combat don't worry too much about it. So long as people can stop (ie. not being chanced by big monster) the GM should allow them to have short rests, do quick rituals etc. without keeping track too much on time. The game is a narrative, time should pass as quickly as the pacing of the story would allow. You don't need to cover every moment in character.
It's going well. The concept works really nicely. With a single encounter each session, the players and DM really enjoy the whole experience instead of feeling rushed. So it's very laid back and actually seems designed to encourage role play.
Im not sure if you are familiar with the video game called Neverwinter Nights. Just wondering, because that game is really based on D&D rules, but the computer rolls and calculates the dice and things. I was wondering if reading up on some D&D Players Handbook rules, if it will help me out with Neverwinter. Neverwinter is based on the Forgotten Realms campaign by the way.
I have played Neverwinter Nights, but I did not beat it. I thought is was a really good game though. Learning the D&D rules would help, however the best way to learn D&D is to actually play.
There are only two things that still confuse me. How do you know which attribute is your "relevant" attribute? How do you calculate attribute modifiers?
Both of the answers are found in the Player's Handbook: Each class section lists and explains its primary and secondary ability scores (such as Strength for the Fighter), and the section about ability scores lists the modifiers for the various scores. It's actually pretty simple. A 10 is +0. For each 2 points above, the modifier goes up by +1 (12 to 13 = +1, 14 to 15= +2, 16 to 17 = +3, etc.). The same works going down (8 to 9 = -1, 6 to 7 = -2, etc.)
hey man thanks for posting that vid my friends and i are going to try to set up DnD again where we live but i have a question.
allright well i have played both a wizard and a bard before but i am haveing problems decideing what to pick. i have a lot of experiance playing the wizard but i have only played the bard once (and i loved it btw)
still im not sure excatly what being a bard means, could you please explain what would be excpeted of me as a bard?
In a combat encounter, a bard is expected to support and heal allies. A bard's attacks often have effects which aid or bolster allies, or impose a slight control element on enemies. Out of combat, a bard is generally an extrovert jack-of-all-trades, possessing several skills, (especially those based on Charisma), and bardic ritual magic.
that makes a lot of sense as i normally play as a half elf which lends its self to knowing many languages which translates to speech checks and stuff like that
normally im the only one in my group who even thinks about trying to talk things out before a fight breakes out, not to mention all of the interagations you have to do as well.
i remember my friend was useing a crossbow and there were two bandits in front of him, so instead of falling back like a rogue should he shot one of them point blank. he rolled a natural 20 so the dm let the arrow go thorugh the first bandit and into the next... so yeah my friends are that kind of player lol
and yeah i wil check your artical out i saw a few of them last night but i dident see that i will go look for it now
Characters can sleep, or as its called in 4e, take an extended rest (to regain hit points, powers, etc.). Some races, such as the eladrin, don't sleep, rather they trance for 4 hours.
Time is very subjective. Three days in-game could pass in three seconds real world time, as the PCs travel along a stretch of highway (assuming they encountered no challenges of any sort). Or, if the PCs have 5 minutes to solve a puzzle, you might literally time them by 5 real world minutes.
I really love this video. However, there are a few things I would like to say. One, you should have used the character sheet and told us where the best place to set all the stats would be (I think this was only for the Attack and defense parts...but it was better than in the book.) another thing I would like to ask is...page numbers. I'd like to know where to find all the info in the PH without having to shuffle through pages of information that I'll get distracted on. Other than that GJ.
Thanks. I originally had made a video where I was filling out a character sheet while generating a character. It ended up being way too long of a video though.

@nightspawn13 In and of itself it doesn't do anything, however lots of powers and feats revolve around wielding two weapons.

@nightspawn13 Wielding a weapon in each hand means does nothing in and of itself. You need specific powers to attack twice with a single action.
