@DiamondPilotDan The winch pulls the aircraft rapidly to about 60-65 knots IAS thus creating enough lift underneath the wings to pull the aircraft into a steep climb.
@DiamondPilotDan Actually thermals can occur on any day, despite the weather conditions. You can quite easily get thermals off of tarmac, it's just a column of rising air!
@XxNx007xNxX Yes, I know al this. My instructor made a mistake, quite simple, and he corrected it! I'm on my GS now and unless you have a low launch fail and turn the wrong way you've got no chance of landing within the prison!
@XxNx007xNxX RAF Watton was formerly Swanton Morley. We all make mistakes- trust me, i'm a staff cadet there. Even if you get a launch failure you've got no real chance of landing in the prison. If you did decide to land there you'd very rapidly become very unpopular :).
Might have been avoided if the handling pilot, instead of pole-bending, signaled for the winch to ease off on the power.

what does a good launch get you altitude wise... (two people)
00Billy 2 weeks ago
@00Billy Depends on the wind strength, thermal strengths, weight of the people, length of the cable, type of glider...etc.
Basically anywhere between 1000ft and 4000ft
