3 and 5 are not the only answers. With the summation of the digits 1 and 2 you get 3 which is 6 less than 9. With the summation of the digits 6, well you get a number that is 3 less than 9. To follow this pattern you can also get the 1+0=1 which is 9-1=8. So 8 could just as easily be the answer.
