@wakman11 That opening with Garner rescuing her with the music edited over is one of the best bits of choreography ever. Have it on DVD and just repeated it so much the disc jumps. Final scene with the cavalry & cast leaving is spot on too.
@TheDrpippi or is that littlepeepee - If you are the definition of a punk, I am happy not to be one. Moron. I don't care where people get it from, I am just happy to give it to people who have found it impossible to download.
@TheDrpippi Well if you don't want it, no skin off my nose of course. But rather than being a bit of a smartass, it might be more constructive if you were to suggest to other posters where it can be downloaded.
12 March 2011: This instrumental music is one of my favorite, but everyone who has heard of the original should listen to one of the greatest pianist in the world Raul DiBlasio from Argentina do his version of this song, "Duel at Diablo".

What a score!!!!!!!!! Must have seen this film when i was about 10 and now 20 yrs later i own the dvd. Top film and top score, up there with the great western sound tracks.
@eightlane1 remeber your mom recently to this remarkable Movie... I like it too! I was born in 1964 but never seen this movie before i was 12 Years old... but since this day i never forgett the sound and Story... its on of the greatest western movies of all times... like shenandoah with James stewart and many others... thanks a lot and best wishtes from germany
The only thing that I wondered about was the idea of a black man having been a sergeant in the old west, not saying black men aren't capable of that, but wasn't people kinda racist back then?
@SquigPie Some, most but in the old west many a lawman was black and a third of cowboys were. By the time this was to have taken place a few young black officers had graduated from West Point.
@SquigPie There were buffalo soldiers (black cavalrymen) who served in the West. There were even blacks who served the Confederacy as well as the Union and who fought w/ Indians against the United States.
One of my favourite (very underated) Westerns and a great theme tune. Plus the knife cutting through the opening credit screen is a CLASSIC shot. Love this film and it was a good part for Sidney Poitier in a racist America.
Apart from the superb score the film has 2 scenes that have stayed in my memory since the 60's. The crazed Bill Travers on horseback waving his sabre at imaginary opponents and the discovery of Dennis Weaver tied to a wagon wheel. Not forgetting his screams. (Incidentally Weaver deserved credit in taking a role at the time which was so diverse to his "Chester" in Gunsmoke)
The soundtrack is available on CD, together with "Horse Soldiers". If it is catalogued under that film, it is sometimes difficult to find ("Horse Soldiers" was often bundled with another film, so make sure you buy the right one).
One of the great invisible tunesmiths, Neal Hefti was also responsible for (for example) the theme from the 60s TV series Batman ("na na na na nah - BATMAN!!") LOL!! Dang, I do love this music.
No it was not bill travers or sidney poitier. The young guy who had an arrow in his hand and rode in the ending with another chap on his right with curly hair.
i have the film the book and the LP love the movie and the music on the lp their is a song that is great never used in the film big shame.come on dvd shops bring out the way west onother classic from the 60s
There are a couple difference between the theme played at the beginning of the movie and this version. There's a sort of pause in the middle which may have something to do with the credits and the ending is a little different.
Moern composers are not allowed to write music like this anymore. The tiny minds at the studios think fifteen year old boys, the average moviegoer, wouldn't appreciate it anyway. Besides, how do you write beautiful music to fit with mindless violence and numbing, gratuitous sex scenes?
The late fifties, early/mid sixties was a halcyon period for western movie themes. This is tremendously catchy, but also listen to The Big Country, theme by Jerome Moross; The Unforgiven (the 1960 film, not the later Clint Eastwood production) theme by Dmitri Tiomkin; The Magnificent Seven, and The Scalphunters, both themes by Elmer Bernstein; Hour of the Gun, theme by Jerry Goldsmith. These are all fantastic compositions, and it would be great to have the original versions on a cd compilation
The "guy" who wrote the music for this film was the FANTASTICALLY TALENTED MR. NEAL HEFTI! The theme from Batman was the simplist thing he ever wrote, but he always stated it was the HARDEST thing he ever wrote. Mr. Hefti wasn't used to writing little rock n roll ditties, but fabulous scores or brilliant big band arrangements for some of the most incredible artists of our time. Please take some time to get to know Mr. Neal Hefti. (He just passed away last month). What a huge loss to us all!
I've just bought a second hand cassette of this soundtrack (yay!) and am having it put on a CD. If anyone would like a copy, please feel free to message me.
I'd be delighted to make you one - I was lucky enough to get a good second hand cassette off Amazon. All I require is postage costs - why don't you message me privately and we'll swap relevant details :)
Compare this movie music with the junk nowadays...well, there is no comparison. Modern composers have their heads up their asses or they just can't say "no" to the loons that finance and produce pictures. Beautiful and distinctive melodies...forget it. Movie music is now called "wallpaper" would you believe.

man..this movie was made when lots of spagetti westerns were getting into the movie market like storm as if beating up
the US westen's traditon..
So, I have appreciated this movie Duel at Diablo very much especially the material, script of the story was excellent..
In additon, I feel as if the music had been
against spagetti westerns storm for holding
US western's heritage barely..
So the music is very very not only great
but also sad for me..5★S..
