Tavares is a very common family name in Cabo Verde, as is Varela and Semedo.

Sara parents were immigrants from Cabo Verde, living in Portugal. She was born in Lisboa. Sara begun her career at the age of 16, when she won a portuguese TV contest (1993/94) with a Whitney Houston impersonation. Her Cabo Verde roots are always present, her bands always have Cabo Verde musicians playing.
