@marito001 There are too many variables I don't know about your system such as temperature, humidity, type and amount of media, and etc. The only way to know for sure is to try it. I have read that you shouldn't run the pump while the plant is in the dark. I've done it both ways and never noticed a difference. As long as the plants don't wilt you are good to go.
algae is not something to get worried about as soil grow plants always grow a layer of algae on the top and grow happily. the bottom line is plants will still grow and it isnt much of an issue. don't give up on soil ever. Try biobizz as it has a really high ec level of 2.2 and the growth rate is nearly as good as hydro as i have tried it. biobizz produces results just as quick as hydro due to its high ec level. Hydro has its benefits but by no means ever quit using soil
@14CPO Sounds like interesting stuff. I took a quick look at their website and found it interesting. I will be taking a closer look, thank you for the heads up. I have not given up on soil but I find Hydroponics such an interesting hobby I do both. The bulk of my veggies this year came from my squarefoot garden and my container grown plants.
i found that with jiffy cubes those bio degradable netting that they come in really does attract algae. I found that algae doesnt grow on the actual coir just the biogegradable netting.. the coir itself is fine but the netting really attracts algae
They actually turned a very dark green. The Hydroton wicked hydroponic solution to the surface of the Sure To Grow cubes. They grew algae on top. Fortunately it only grew on the surface, not down in the cube. Read some comments and you will see I did several things wrong with this first system. Even with all my mistakes the plants still grew like crazy. Hydroponics is such a fun and easy hobby.
If you have a problem with the soda bottle cracking while you are drilling the holes in the bottom, you can heat a good size nail (I lay it down on the stove and heat it up that way) and then poke holes in the bottom of the container with the hot nail. I use pliers to hold the nail (obvious, but needed saying).
I have used a soldering iron to do the same thing, but it smells bad. You have a good Idea for someone that does not own a soldering iron. So far I have been lucky not to have a problem with the bottle cracking. I will demonstrate how I get around that problem in an upcomming video. Thank you for your kind words and the great idea!
Good job...your going to eat well ;) I use a few small pebbles such as pea gravel or aquarium rock and mix it with the soil media in the base such as the pop bottle base you have. That helps the roots get oxygen and draining is better too. But that is just my 2 cents :) I am a firm believer in getting oxygen to the root zone. Farms till because it breaks up the surface allowing oxygen\water to penetrate as well as keep weeds at bay.
Thank you for the advice on the pop bottle pots. It is very likely that by not putting pebbles or something in the bottom, it caused the plants to get water logged. Lack of fresh air definitely caused the demise of my jalapeno seeds. A couple lessons learned about the importance of getting oxygen to the root zone. Good call NOSMOJEFF.
When I used the bottles last year with my tomatoes, I but a few little holes in the bottom of the bottles and put them in a tray to drain if they needed too.
I'm trying something new now. I stuffed a strip of cloth into the hole of each pop bottle pot and let it drape down into a container of water. Not only are the pots now self watering, their not getting over watered.
excellent job on the cilantro

FenderGibsonWashburn 10 months ago
@FenderGibsonWashburn If I leave mine from 10 pm to 7 am off. Do you think that will affect the plant?

Is a 3 gallon container big enough to grow some peppers, will they grow big? nice video.
marito001 10 months ago
@marito001 Yes. That is the size bucket used in the Ebb and Grow system and I have seen that system grow peppers successfully.
