I think it means spirit in a poetic sense. I know what you mean though. I tend to shy away from that kind of language when talking to christians because they always misunderstand.
@immortalPhoenix1986 no. atheism by definition is the lack of belief in a god. you can still believe in ghosts and spirits and such and be an atheist under its definition.
@Benlucky13 I suppose there are people who believe and disbelieve in every possible combination of things but I like to think most atheists are smart enough to know that ghosts, vampires, ghouls and goblins are make-believe.
This is not an ad "for atheism", it's an ad for pantheism and humanism. Atheism is simply a lack of something, anything else is not about atheism. Check out pantheism dot net to see what I mean. Thanks.
I agree. Atheists don't necessarily hold any other views than "There are no gods." Being an atheist doesn't mean you are a good person any more than being a theist means you are a good person.
@blinkfoxypony exactly, except theists tend to beleive in a doctrine that calls for violence, no matter how much they denie it, oh will they denie it lol
Is this spirit located inside the brain, what is it's chemical composition? how and why did it evolve? Do all animals have it? Well, I suppose as an add intended for a theist it might strike a cord with them to think "hey, Atheists can be spiritual too?" so on second thought it might be a pretty good movie.
My little pet theory is that our powerful minds gave us considerable evolutionary advantage, but with a high cost, consciousness. With that people could easily come to the conclusion that life is pointless, then do themselves in. Those with some built in system of purpose to life, often associated with "spirituality," could commit suicide at a lower rate. Would be interesting if that could be studied.
Thanks, but I put "spirit" in there intentionally. There is a scientific basis for feelings of "spirituality," there are regions of the brain that give rise to such feelings. Like any part of the human body, it should be carefully managed and exercised. We just don't need to check our brains into the hat room when we exercise it. We often get strong feelings when contemplating the universe, and I strongly believe atheism can use spirit, at least until a proper replacement can be produced.
This is shit... I'm not persuaded at all to become an Atheist.
Try again.

Indeed, it can be problematic, but does create much conversation over the possible definitions and meaning it has to individuals.

Spirit Atheism? Never heard of any such thing... Ever.
Do you mean simply naturalism?

I thought atheists didn't believe in spirits... unless he means your emotions.
zycon97 4 years ago
We don't, but there is the feeling of "spirituality" that humans share that has nothing to do with the supernatural kind. It is simply a feeling.
yamahaeleven 4 years ago
Indeed. It can be a very powerful experience.
It shifted my life.

Take out the "spirit" part in the slogan and I love it.

A little short.
Was the soldier or the wounded an atheist?
howtofoldsoup 4 years ago
Does it matter? Just a random image of caring, more to show how similar atheists are to everyone.

The challenge called for 30 seconds, or less. Would have been happy to make longer, but wanted to stay in the spirit of the challenge.
