There's a book called "Blink" (not about race, it's about the mind) - kinda long-winded but not bad. One study cited in there is that Black people, when asked to identify their race on a pre-test questionaire (as opposed to no such pre-test question) score MUCH LOWER. Even black folk are predjudiced against black folk, including their own selves. I'm not sure of the mechanism but it seems to dredge up all the negative stereotypes and it makes a measurable and substantial difference.

Asians graduating at a higher rate is also based on strict immigration laws (applied ONLY to Asians/Chinese) that only allowed highly educated individuals from those countries in the 19th century. This is how many Asisns got into the country - by being educated. Contrast this with the way blacks got into the country and the way they were treated.. FYI, I am Asian and often feel forgotten in these discussions, but it's important to see both sides.

To go a bit further (500 char limit), I agree that raciam AA is dividing, and a economic-based system would be much better. I'm just defending the concept of AA itself, since it comes under fire at a greater and greater rate these days. To go back on topic, though, it's the same as being proud of your sister or brother for being valedictorian, or people being proud in 69 that they were american and an American landed on the moon.

I was referring to your dismissive attitude to Affirmative Action. I believe all races, if given an equal opportunity, can compete to more or less a standstill, as no race is superior or inferior. However, historical, nor contemporary, racist settings have created an environment where people DO NOT have an equal opportunity. AA WOULD be unfair if the racism of the past hadn't created a climate where many minorities are at a disadvantage.

There is a distinct and obvious difference between racial pride and racial supremacy. Yes, racial pride is a declaration of worth, but it is not a slap in the face to other races. it is an assertion of one's race as being equal among all others in the world, and an assertion that it merits that position. I'm sorry, but some peoples need to start their race a step further ahead than they do now to have an even starting line with the others - yellow, brown, black, low-income caucasian, whatever.

Asians only get one month? Black History month. Women's month. I think the fact that we have to focus on a "minority" group for one month means that the majority is still...overwhelmingly in control the rest of the months.

There is Irish Heritage month and Germany heritage month, in America. I think there might be some other months like that for immigrant groups that played had a prominent role in America or possibly had enough people asking for a month, but I am unsure if they always happen every year.

Hate and prejudice know no geographic bounds, no race, no religion and no age. I am white with friends named Leung, Mwasi, VanVoorhis, Trawinski, Alvarado and any other race or religion you can name. No one should blame people of the same ethnicity for stupidity by one or more of the same race or religion. Stupidity also knows no boundaries. The time to heal is now and the way to start is with the person in the mirror. AND NEVER, EVER pass it on to your children.

I guess so. Depends on where you life. Where I live, there is discrimination within Asians, which is sad. It used to be "asian pride" and "asian culture club". Now its "Korean pride" and "Korean culture club".
90 percent of people are racist. Closet racists or open racists, there is discrimination everywhere.

After the Virginia Tech massacre, I experienced some Asian discrimination. I was approached in a supermarket by some people who started calling me "chink", "nip" & "wong-chong". They blamed me for the massacre just because I was Asian. I was almost beaten up right there, but I escaped.

The worse is when old guys that served in World War 2 (against the Japanese), The Korean War (against the Koreans) and Vietnam (against the Vietnamese) just stare at me because they're having post-traumatic stress war flashbacks.
