  • The fact that she used the term "good hair" made me completely discredit anything she had to say about dreadlocks.

  • good hair means healthy hair not chemically damaged or over-processed

  • By 'good hair' she just means that it's an easier hair type to style. She's not insulting you, jeez.

  • nice hair its very long

  • nice

  • Poeple. Get over yourself. Seriously

  • This is what I would have to do to mine

  • I want my dreads to look like lil waynes or Larry Fitzgeralds

  • To be honest I feel that this lady does have good hair for dreads because it is nappy and keeps its shaping well compared to smoother hair. So if this comment of 'good hair' to her patient somehow offends your feelings then learn to chill out and not take everything like it was directed at you personally...

  • cool

  • Good hair = MY HAIR. Sit down

  • In my opinion, the "good hair" is the extremely curly hair. Not because it is better than curly hair in general, but because it is perfect for forming dreads. Dreadlocks were MADE for super curly hair, after all. For the record, my hair isn't super curly, and I still acknowledged this fact :)

  • it is important not to call locks dred locks cause white people use to call the slaves dredful cause when their hair was locked it was strange to them an they said they look like animals and called them DREDful

  • @cheadley6

    Exactly.

  • Thats a BIG ring..

  • true story. wat is exactly good hair??

  • I'VE BEEN LOCING FOR 2MONTHS!!!!!

  • good hair is slang for straight hair you dumbass'

  • i have REAL dread locks but my mom is taking them out but thats beside the point that kinda looks like a real dread lock but i bet if you just look at it it looks more like a dread

  • I like this backcombing technique. I want to try it, & I hope my mama can recreate it (esp. since my hair is short). I can't wait!

  • hey im a upcoming rapper from the south, an i got dreads too..i got my dread journey on utube an some really good music, if u get a min search "jjdownz" u wont b disapointed, preciate it!(:

  • sweet love this video!!

  • I love your dreads! (hair stylist)

  • I think she meant 'good hair' to work with. It's easier than many other types of hair. Cheese n' rice, crazy people!

  • I think you guys who are offended by the "good hair" comment are just looking for a reason to be mad(Like the majority of angry people in the world). It honestly just sounded like she was giving her patient a compliment.

  • @valeoncat13 God BLESS you!! Im so glad you said that! Im tired of "naturals" bashing scrutinizing every little thing.

  • @valeoncat13 To be truthful she was definitely making the correlation of good hair and fine texture hair/or straight hair to hair like cauasian people. Its very clear this is what she meant because right before she's speaking about white hair. I'm sure she meant nothing by it though as it is common that a number of blacks think this way. And pointing this out I think has nothing to do with anger.

  • there is no such thing as bad hair! if u have hair at the top of your head then you have good hair! That was a white supremacy tactic to keep us as african american's down and out. we all have good hair kinky or not! and there is no such thing as nappy hair only natural!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! jeez!

  • Wow. Half these comments are hating on the lady's comment of "good hair"--- Anybody losing their temper on that is an effing loser.--- She's a damn barber, that's just what barbers say: "you have such good hair"... Race has nothing to do with anything, you shitheads.=P

  • well gee what do you people know about good "black hair"? black hair is completely different than other hair.

  • @Yumi1851, I am not white so I suppose that gives me your blessing to respond. There are several responders to this video who took offense to the use of the term "good hair." Should we all just take your advice and "shut up?" NO ONE with this mentality should be creating locs or any natural hairstyle. Good hair, especially for locs, is hair that has very little difficulty locing. The kinkier the better.

  • This lady got me at "good hair" sorry lady your are lost.

  • What the hell is good hair? Please!!!!! no one has good hair, especially not African Americans, thatr i s why Shabazz went in to the jungle, which make our nose big and our hair kinky from the heat. Good hair

  • she does nt have good hair. i have good black hair. SNOFADBAG if u hav like stright to wavy hair like nt bein racist bt white hair then bacombings the best way and take thoes bands out caues it limits movment and your hair needs movement so it can matt then lock alot faster

  • brilliant technique

  • that is brilliant

  • hello im caucasian and i want to get dreads like the lady who is doing them on this video same blonde colour and everything but do i need to grow my hair long coz its only bout 2 inches ?

  • @Babcemakedonce1

You may need it to be a little longer. It's harder to twist white people hair than it is black people hair, especially when it is as short as yours.

  • beautiful hair, nice technique

  • Dang everything was all good...then she had to go say somethin' IGNORANT!

  • Surely backcombing afro hair is just causing unnecessary damage to what is naturally perfect hair for dreading. I get that ppl with silky straight hair can benefit from backcombing which still damages it the same but there hair is shit for dreading so its understandable why this method is done. Just my thoughts by each to there own I guess.

  • WELL I LIKE THE VIDEO.. I READ A FEW OF THE COMMENTS AND WHAT A SHAME......JUST LET IT GO. AND DID SOMEONE REALLY SAY HOUSE NINJA?...REALLY ....SAD

  • healthy hair is what is considered "good hair".....i wish stupid bitches would stfu about good hair and bad hair and just focus on having healthy hair

  • will you all let it go!! good has many definitions and can reference a lot of things.. that women is not puttin down black hair type.. she is stating the versatility or quality of the girls hair.. and in her defense i agree.. i think the thicker and the more versatile the better the hair is.. REGARDLESS of the texture.. you people need to pay attention to what is being said she never say white people hair is GOOD.. ugh.. get over it

  • @xTheSuperSaiyan wow, resulting to insults? How original....and just when i thought you could have something intelligent to contribute..Ha ha ha

  • Black people can use this technique without even doing the 2 stranded twist. I just backcombed my own hair and palm rolled it and kept it moving. It works great with black hair because our hair is kinky to begin with. Sure, we can just twist or coil them but what end up happens is one we wont wash it resulting having an itchy and dirty scalp and they unravel when you do wash them that is why I chose to back comb my locks. That method she is showing is too much. You do not have to do all that.

  • how to keep dreads clean

    seddik.byethost5 . com/

  • Poor choice of words for a professional black stylist...."this technique is best for caucasian and 'good' hair".

    Otherwise good instructional video.

  • Good hair? Pathetic woman but what do you expect? She dyed her loc extensions blonde, for goodness sake. That alone speaks volumes about her lack of self-awareness and her lack of understanding about the ethnic beauty of kinky, African curly locs. Black people with this level of mentality should not be creating locs.

  • @drwpsych are you white? if so, shut up.

  • After time passes will the dreads become thicker and look like yours?

  • i want dreads..im tired of my fauxhawk :(

  • Please Mekhat, you are clearly a speacialist..

After backcombing you seperate into two and twist, when you backcomb the two strand twist to matt it further how doesn't it lose form.

I see how you did it but i'm sure there is more then what meets the eye.

  • i should have seen this before i cut off all my long hair to get dreads. but i just went natural for awhile cut it off then had it twisted up. i am loving my new look. i just wish that they were longer.

  • aww man yall amped on the good hair comments. its not that serious. she was given the girl a compliment.

  • 10 seconds into the video "good hair"? I don't understand. Any healthy hair = good hair.

  • Very helpfull!!!! Thanks and soon i will have dreads...

  • Comment removed

  • she has "good hair" sounds like you have a house nigger mentality. pretty sad

  • @KillahB89 why do you need to put down people?

  • @KillahB89 You didn't have to bring out the race card. Since when "Good Hair" offends people? Fuck everybody that has to bitch about "Good Hair". Smh It's not that serious.

  • And what exactly is "good hair", pray tell?...

  • @bardoville To make dread locks curly hair is better than straight....good hair.

  • @maaximo ahhh, I understand :)

  • @bardoville Yeah, I was lowkey disturbed by that... especially coming from a loc wearer

  • "good hair" there is no such thing....its all about how you take care of ur hair....

  • So theise will lock????

  • i don't think she really meant "good hair" as in the stereotypical issue, but good hair for backcombing.

  • @iiLulu10 yeah she did even say it in a manner in which i think she was being sarcastic..

  • tHATS fOR pOSTING tHIS! lIVE aND lEARN!

  • please tell me whats your definition of good hair????

  • Real Naughty brides are there world5.info

  • i got dreads, when i started, i just did the same thing, my girl twisted it and i just left it till it got frizzled and then i threaded it to keep it together, 3 months later i took out the thread and its all good..

  • how can i make my dreads thicker because i have 3 that look like their getting ready to break off

  • thats like horse tail hair!

  • i notice more black ppl gets locks to form dreads. but they seem to create a tight dread from the locking form. I perfer to use the backcombing method because i like he soft dread look. but my question is if i backcomb my hair while pressed(hot comb) will it effect my dreads in a harmful way pls help i want my dreads be4 the new year thanks.

  • @imastxner Yes... It will take your hair longer to lock up at first because it is straight. Though, then again... when you wash your hair, it will curl back up, so... who knows. My best friend tried to lock her hair... while it was already hot-combed... and the results were VERY interesting. She ended up taking them down and doing them again. I say, honestly... if you dont want unpredictable results... just do it the normal way. in the end your hair will eventually lock how it wants to lock...

  • 2:23 SHE LAUGHS LIKE THE LADY FROM MAD TV , "UHUHUHHHHH!!"

  • Dreadlocks arent nasty, they're beautiful. I know people with dreads, whose hair is cleaner and smells better... than people who are without dreads. Backcombing doesn't particularly harm your hair, it just knots it up. So.. If you're dreading your hair... knots should be the last thing that you are worrying about.

  • can i start dreads on my relaxed hair by back combing and then twisting ??

  • @anke3000 Yes... but as your hair grows, there will be a noticable difference between the permed portion of the dreadlock and the unpermed portion. What you can do is, gradually cut off the permed portion of your hair as it grows and locks.

  • @ashleylross interesting ... i think i like that idea better than the big scary chop lol

  • @ashleylross i like that idea too, i had permed my hair, and as i guy, going from permed hair to dredlocks, i would feel embarrased, so i will take into consideration the gradual cutting rather than a total head shave.

  • im sorry...but i think dreads are nasty.....

  • i have bad hair it dnt listing I tell it to get out my face it gets in my face i tell it to stop going in my ears it gose in my ears.... i think good hair is hair that do what you tell it....

  • Were is this place?!?!

  • My hair is relaxed. Can I dreadlock it? It's shoulder length and I don't want to cut it to grow it out to start my dreads. I have kinky twists in them now, but i'm ready for a lifetime of dreads. So can I dreadlock my relaxed hair????

  • im just wondering do you need extensions on a white guy with straight hair and about the lenght of 13 cm to get dreads ?

  • Back combin cnt be good4your hair

  • GooD Hair!

  • how does it turn out if i start with plaits

  • whats the difference between good hair and bad hair? i have mexican hair. is that good hair or bad hair?

  • @uc95nu51 all hair is good. just find the technique you think will work best for your hair, and go from there.

  • Babylon, you don't know what you doing, no. This is not dreadlocks, which are a natural thing, NOT a hairstyle. Big difference. You can't improve on Jah, Seen?

  • WHEN THEY SAY GOOD HAIR THEY SAYING ITS HARD TO TWIST IF YOU TWISTED THAT IT WULD UNRAVIL JUST LIKE MINE DID BUT THEY WERE SUPPOCE TO USE BEEZWAAX THEY USED PRO STYLE NAPPY HAIR ISX BAD HIAR

  • Where did you get your styling cape? Really want one...

  • It's such a brainwash term to say that hair is good or bad... A big turn off. My hair is thick, tight and super curly. like lambs wool, like the messiah. And that can't be bad.

  • I've watched a few of your videos and I must say you seem to use the term "Good Hair" often. Please be mindful of the words you use.

  • Q. What is good hair? A. Hair that grows. In my opinion the more course your hair is I feel the better only because it can take more handling then what some may say is "GOOD HAIR" (soft curly stuff) Just enjoy what you got and make it work for you

  • Wow!

  • Good hair? I'm turning this OFF!!!

  • Damn..i need her to do mine

  • Hair is hair for crying out loud woman! If you have hair on your head...its good!!!!!

  • how much can backcombing for dreads cost at a salon?

  • @chives776 I read about $20 - $30 an hour

  • She suppose to be into natural hair and she saying stuff like "GOOD HAIR" not cool!

  • Comment removed

  • Some of you are too uptight and sensitive. The hair model, Ashley, has been featured in almost all of her videos. She's done so much styling to that girl's hair just to show people how to braid, twist, etc... that's probably where the "good hair" comment came. In order to withstand all that styling, you need good, strong healthy hair.

  • Good Hair?? I almost stop watching after that comment. The whole dreadlock thing is about natural methods and accepting your hair as it is. The Good Hair ideal is senseless, coming from a Post-Reconstruction era where blacks thought that being white was being good. So, Good Hair implies White Hair, which is misguided. Hair textures vary, and I love that....

  • What product do you use when first starting dreadlocks? Some people have told me not to use beeswax because it causes build-up and catches lint. What should I use?

  • Why yall wanna make a fuss about every little thing if yall got a problem with what she said then yall didn't have to watch the video. She can say wth she want to say.

  • bc Caucasian is good hair!!! and getting locks is all about embracing Caucasian hair textures!

  • @Khonsu1212 What the fuck are you talking about? So black people get locs to embrace caucasian hair textures. No, I don't think so. Shut the fuck up, please!

  • @deluvsme its called SARCASM.........take your own advice

  • @Khonsu1212 oh okay, my bad homie I thought you were really serious!Lol

  • looks like a dreadlock but its not a dreadlock

  • @itsallgood239 its going to be a dreadloc when it locs up!

  • Please answer this question! After you get this done, do you sit under a blowdryer for 20 minutes? thats what it says on the mango & lime locking gel!

  • i have a question: i heard that when u back comb. it makes the dreads permanent almost immediately is that true? and if not how much time shuld i have to take em out

  • this more like braids than dreadlocks. How would you make thick dreds rather than these skinny braids?

  • what does she mean goos hair ? DO i have bad evil hair? :< i hope not

  • ya'll offended cuz she said good hair? but if she said nappy ya'll wouldn't care, go head wit that

  • poor you.. you're a sista with locks, yet you buy into the "good hair" bullshit :(

    free your mind

  • haha when i was little i didnt comb my hair for about a week and i got dreads, they were a b*tch to comb out, but i guess thats how my ancestors got them. one day i might dabble into the style, but now im not brave enough

  • Thank you so much, this really explains a lot in a way that's easy for me to understand!

  • Stop Bitchin jus cuz the woman said good hair. Goddamn.

  • Good hair??????????? stopped wtching after that.

  • @solfamilyj I agree. for her to be a stylist, she is ignorant as hell. smh.

  • did she actually say "good hair"?? it's too bad, cuz she might be very skilled and talented but she just outted her own self-internalized colonial politics, and thus discrediting herself...wow....in the end, sporting natural hair is really only for show. in the end, we need to detangle our minds...

  • @daphizzle she definitely didnt mean it like that because that girl doesnt have good hair in the way that society defines good hair..

  • possibly, but it's all about context...it might have been a freudian slip on her part, who knows...or maybe she's being subversive in her re-appropriation of the term "good hair"...would be great to get her take on all this... either way, as an expert in the field, she should at least be aware of how her use of "good hair" might have been misconstrued...the fact that we're having this conversation is evidence of the controversy behind that phrase..it still strikes at a nerve for us.

  • @daphizzle Stupidest I've ever Read! I'm sorry.Nice little pun at the end too How long did it take you to come up with the that one? An Hour?

  • well i disagree.understand what she saying when she says " good "hair she means more of a versatility of the girls hair. if she meant it in the context that black hair is bad (which the girl does hair typical black hair) she would say Caucasians have "best" hair or some reference of the sort which she never does. That girl hair isnt spanish wavy or anythig for everyone to think that as an offensive statement. black hair is "good" and "best" BECUASe its VERSATILE.dont put words in her mouth

  • I think she meant good hair as in easy to use as a model to show the different techniques. The same girl was featured in all of her braids, twists and locs videos. Sidenote: Being that so many people are very sensitive about the term "good hair" she probably shouldn't have used it.

  • im white and white people are assoiciated with straight hair. straight hair is harder to dread. i like her tecnique. i like the curly dreads.

  • Healthy hair is good hair.

  • @Babyshaq569 You said it all!!!

  • @Babyshaq569 I just notice that too and was about to comment on it before I saw this. "We use this on caucasian hair...or on ashley hair since she has such good hair" wtf. Sad rly

  • fuck back combing is gonna suck when i get my dreads

  • she was saying it good towards white people. why people being soo wound up bout it. she was being cool to white people.

  • exactly! and what does "good hair" look like to the average white person? is it closer to mariah carey's or to whoopi goldberg's? there's a great video on here called 400 years without a comb that goes through the history of our obsession with "good hair"...it's really informative (though the production isn't all that great)..check it out :)

  • I cant agree more with you. I thought I was the only one that caught that. That means she is only in it for the money. She have no knowledge of anything. Its all an act.. HOTEP

  • Mekhat opened her own salon specializing in natural hair including locks and various braiding techniques. Her decision helped set a trend that can be seen through out St. Louis. As the owner of the signature Napps hair salon, Mekhat has used her knowledge of culture to emphasize on the critical importance of individuality and maintaining healthy hair. Her quest to detangle the myths of Good Hair has finally become a topic that mainstream America is beginning to understand. 314-727-0312 Napps

  • Ha-ha! There "IS" something on YT on this subject! Well, I have to say: it's hilarious for years now, I see these pseudo-hippie white chicks with dirty, nasty-looking matted dreadlocks walking around, and *EVERYTIME* they have this lazy-eyed, noise in the air, smug look about them, like they think men are lusting for them? LMAO!! No one has the heart to tell them that the reason men are looking is the same reason we look at a car accident. How disgusting it looks! Like we don't want your lice!

  • and this is how you get dreads?

  • @Joakimbrian1 It's a method. theres a bunch of methods but two strand twists take the shortest to lockup.

  • good hair is the hair on your head

  • What did that "good hair" and "caucasian" comment mean?

  • black people have this weird idea that good hair, is hair with the least amount of kinks, so by that defination i have really bad hair

  • thats hilarious!! My hair is horrible then

  • ah the lady didnt say she as real locks she is jus showing us how to do dread locks and how to keep it nice and neat. give her a break that is how we tear each other apart as a race

  • my hair is more like a 4A/ 4B but i used this method to start my locs, and it turned out prety well. I backcombed making sure the roots were really tight, not like this chick did, i mean REALLY tight. then i did a three strand twist. what helped is that for the first week i went to the beach and had to retwist and wash my hair. i did a light rewtist and kept it covered with a wool scarf for two weeks. now my roots are tight and the twists are adequately matted.

  • LOL GOOD HAIR!

  • "Good Hair" : |

  • i cant stand when people use the term good hair its moronic good hair is hair that doesnt break period

  • Good hair is kinky/nappy hair, period.

  • ppl are we seriously argueing about good hair and a bad hair and this and that, all hair is the same im white by the way but we should be talking about our brothers in sout afriika the argue for their lives not dis petty hair talk!

    JAH BLESS.....one love

  • OMFG the first good expertvillage video.

    holy shit someone call dr.dre

  • I wore locks for 13 years,I recently cut them,I miss them alot dearly.I know I will be going back I will try this techniqe.

  • Good Hair!!!!! I'm sick of that saying.

  • I am sick of ppl using the term "good hair" as well. hair is hair, the only time hair becomes "bad" is when it is damaged from lack of care or being over-processed

  • @GirlzRGaga4Me

Yes, it sounds so ignorant, I was thinking the same thing!

  • @GirlzRGaga4Me Yeah I didn't like that either. As long as the hair is not damaged its "Good Hair"

  • @GirlzRGaga4Me my sentiments exactly!!

  • Thanks I needed to know how to do this no hairdressers do dreads around here.

  • Say word...good hair, no such thing! Different grades...over processed hair becomes bad!

  • Why not get pissy when she says "good hair"? black ppl are the last ppl on earth who should be using that term, since they get so offended when white ppl talk about black hair being "bad" , they shouldn't put any hair type above any other, stop being such hypocrites...

  • its actually just a habit honestly. Not hypocrites. You see the term good hair came about, from when white people would make fun of the slaves hair. So the term came about to those who had "good-hair" by a white man's POV. However it is still used no, mainly by black people. Just because they picked up the habit from their parents, who picked it up from theres and so forth.

  • its a bad habit that i going to take time to throw away
