i needed a car for my grandaughter so i looked at this volvo s40, yes this is the only car at this time to get the then full 4 stars, out of the 13 family cars tested in 1997, yeah sure all cars are now safe, but 1 will always be safer volvo.

If you guy wonder why the 90's crash tests seem so poor, is because the car makers went from making tough tanks that gives the occupants head, chest and internal injuries to make softer cars that protects the head and other areas with airbags and crumple zones.

cars in the 70's were very tough, and people got killed from hitting stuff in the car and getting so many forces to the body, and from the lack of seat belts

80's cars were way too soft (at least european) and crumped too much

Volvo is indeed the safest car 10 years ago.. however many cars started to use 940 volvo as their testing point.. therefore most cars like BMW, Merc, Fiat, Renault are the safest now

Just check out the same test for a 97 model Passat or Peugeot (both can be found on YouTube) and you'll definitly want to have a Volvo.

It has three airbags. There's side impact bags in the seats. However, Volvo for long had the passenger side airbag as an option, since it is very dangerous if you place a rearward facing child seat in the passenger seat if it's an airbag there....

Passenger front airbag can be turn off in those cases, this is not an excuse.

4 stars nowadays rating with 26 points... audi a4 had 17 points with 2.5 stars, mercedes benz c class 2.5 stars with 16 points peugeot 406 2 stars with 15 points and the catastrophy bmw 3 series 1.5 stars with 10 points all these cars are 1997, to be honest i never liked volvos; but i always had that deep respect that they're one of the most safest and most reliable cars on the planet :)
