  • I liked this album

  • The fact Kiss was able to come back after releasing this shit sandwich of an album is proof of karma and loyal fans. This album was A-W-F-U-L and should have ended their careers.

  • @jobu88 whatever kid. it was underground and not even near as bad as people like u make it.

  • @4everliam LOL good one. First off, I'm not a kid, I was there when Kiss made it big in 75. I saw them in 77 -78-79. I saw them go off the deep end with albums like Unmasked and the cheezy outfits from a Disney show. And I had the sorry experience of paying cash money for the Elder. It was awful; not just ordinary awful, it was EPIC awful. Kiss is still my favorite band, but I'm honest enough to call a turd a turd.

  • This album is pretty good and Eric Carr is the best is and is always my favorite kiss member!

  • GREAT album.

  • i never got into this album, but when i saw them on fridays, they blew me away, aces guitar sounds like god, i love the solo in the oath, and when he does that feedback then pick scrape in i, just a wonderful sound,

  • @vanhalen515084 ace only played on his 2 songs: dark light & escape from the island. the solos you liked were played by some other guy.

  • Very cool, did the album justice.

Probably did more press for the record here than the band actually did at the time.

  • best kiss lp to date.

  • @bertsdog

    Yes...

  • Music From "The Elder" to me was just crap. "Dark Light" and "The Oath" was great tracks but I can do without it.

  • Does anyone else realize that Paul is wearing women's boots during the Elder era? LOL

  • wasnt carrottop the only one dat bought dat

  • Paul say "Oops", his propensity for show-tunes got the better of him:

"But it sounds like The Who!".

I'm surprised Gene bought it, oh well, nobody's perfect.

  • wtf lol huge kiss fan but this is something that is way off the kiss train

  • can anyone tell me where you can get bootleg demos for the elder?

  • I truly think thee is some vey good stuff on this, Paul is bordering on Rock Opera, but as usual Ace just ROCKS it with Dark Light!

  • im 38 now and i loved the elder as a kid and love it more as an adult.

  • at least they took a risk. hate when music groups brag about their 6 months in the studio and it ends up sounding like their last 6 albums!

  • I'd have to say Only You is one of KISSes best songs.

It's as good as anything off ALIVE! or Love Gun.

  • I think what makes this album a "stinker" for many is the fact that the heavy/rockin tunes were hidden between all of the songs filled with an orchestra. These songs, IMO, are Mr Blackwell, I, The Oath, Escape from the Island, and Dark Light. All cool tunes. The album started out very un -KISSlike and set the tone for the rest of it. That said, it is a great musical piece of KISStory.

  • 7th son of a 7th wipes the floor with this album, as far as concept albums go

  • I don't know where they were going with this album and the look. It's not one of my favorite periods of KISS.

  • Not a big kiss fan but I like concept albums. I grew up on aslyum, animalize and lick it up. This is not kiss, the real kiss. They took in extra song writers or somthing. The fans could heard it and could not get past it, I think it's kind a cool!

  • @93hipgnosis

I'm growing up on Sonic Boom and more KISS to come!

  • THIS ALBUM SUCKED. HOW DID THEY GO FROM ROCK AND ROLL, TO DISCO AND THEN STRAIGHT TO MEDIEVIL. THIS IS REALLY THE ONLY ALBUM I HATE FROM KISS.

  • The Elder is one of my favorite albums, period.

Not just one of my favorite KISS albums, one of my most cherished albums of all time! I was 6 years old when my dad took me to the record store and told me to buy whatever records(yes, record) I wanted for my birthday on November 1981.

I still have that exact record. 5/5 stars!

  • i like the album...but Oddyesy is HORRIBLE!!

  • kindda reminds me of genisis

  • Very good album. I appreciate the fact that it's full of songs not about getting laid and rock and roll. This is just different, and I appreciate that also.

  • I know the later version of this put the songs in the intended order, but there wa nothing like dropping the nedle on the vinyl and hearing the Oath explode out of the speakers back then. Having the first 3 songs be Fanfare Just A Boy and Oddyssey would have made this a bigger flop than it was. Don't get me wrong, I love The Elder and think its under rated (and Ezrin's commenst piss me off) but the original song order with the singles leading off each side was a cool call.

  • its a good album the costume changes were bad very cheesey.

  • The Elder was voted the #1 WORST "rock" opera.

    No wonder ACE left.

  • It was different,,very different,,,it wasnt typical KISS.But it wasnt actually bad song writting, just very different. And im glad Ace did leave.Hes been gone now for over 20 years and what the hell has he done that says hes better than Paul or Gene. - I could just imagine if ACE and PETER took control of KISS and GENE and PAUL WERE THE ONES WHO LETF THE BAND - EXACTLY - KISS WOULDNT EXIST

  • @LORDZAYVIOUS Kiss only exsists as a parity of itself. IMO, Frehley was the musical driving force. I hardly consider spitting blood and setting fire to your hair great musicianship.

  • @LORDZAYVIOUS ACE had a very successful solo career and still does and has only been gone 8 years dont forget he rejoined KISS 1996-2002 and just saying PETER had a pretty good solo career and rejoined KISS 1996 till he left in the middle of 2001 and rejoined 2002-2004

  • @TheJokersWildCoC17 First off, Ace's solo career was what I like to call mid-level status. The only solo album of his to go platinum was the one released in 1978. His first solo album after he left is a great album, the second one was garbage, Trouble Walkin was better and Anamoly is a complete piece ot shit that sounds as if it was produced and mixed by a 10 year old kid. Peter's solo career? He couldn't even sell out a high school gymnasium back in 1981 and today would be no different.

  • @CaptainShinyJunk First off, what gives you the right to be such a random ass hole? anyways i love Aces KISS 78 solo album its great all good songs and Frehleys Comet is a good album all the songs are also great but as for Second Sighting not really good at all except the songs insane,Juvenile Delinquent and Fallen Angel are good and Trouble Walkin' the whole album is great and anomlay is great read my other coment to you for Peter

  • @CaptainShinyJunk as for Peter Criss have you even listend to Out of Control or Let Me Rock You or Cat #1? or the band Criss? or the band Chelsea?? theyre all great music and aside from Chelsea its all rock and as for the 78 K I S S album its different then the other albumss but its just as good its not rock but its kinda jazz and R&B its good and i like it and so do most fans and One For All you have to give it a chance and know what the songs are writtin about

  • @TheJokersWildCoC17 - I dont call peters career a very good career- My point for saying what i said,is because im tired of Ace bashing KISS when he had plenty of time to build a career.Hes surviving, but if hes so happy with his career , then he needs to just SHUT UP ,AND BE HAPPY.But ofcoures hes not happy with his career.Going from bigtime stadiums to small time rock clubs is his fault not paul and genes.

  • you said it all orangeman, and said it best.

  • The music didn't fit the ghoulish image anymore....

  • I Love it........... :-)

  • just listen to the whole album for the first time yesterday....i,ve never heard such crap in all my life......gene and paul have a lot to answer for!!!!!!.......yes drugs and alcohol...did its damage to the band...but so did BIG EGO,S....this is pure ego driven rubbish.....Ace was right not wanting to do this album

  • @antropes one of kiss best albums.you have no musical taste

  • Comment removed

  • LMAO.....you say their best music came from the 80,s and 90,s....your jokin right......or you really dont have any musical taste...the 80,s kiss is average pop music at best...

  • @antropes you have no musical taste.all you have is an opinion and what you favor more..which is 70's kiss.and thats fine.but their best writing and playing came in the 80's and 90's.the musicians that gene and paul hired after ace and peter left were ten times more talented then any of the original four.and thats a fact.eric carr and eric singer are way better drummers then peter.vinnie, mark and bruce are way better then ace.,nothing against ace and peter, but the others are way more talented.

  • @antropes kiss only good 70's albums were the first two.the rest was ok at best.the writing and playing on the elder, creatures and revenge were kiss at their best.and i mean at their best as gene and paul had someone else write the music.

  • i think i have musical taste....and l,ll argue that till the day i die!!!.....looks like we have to disagree on that point!!!...yes personally i prefer 70,s kiss....i think they lost their way somewhat after 78..79......all those you mentioned are fine musician,s...l,ll admit that.....but they will never have the chemistry of the original four....that said i suppose we have to agree to disagree....nothing wrong with healthy debate!!!!!!!!!

  • Adoro èste àlbum, los mejores temas: The oath, Mr Blackwell, Just a boy, Dark light, I y A word without heroes.

  • crap

  • Odyssey sounds like a Gospel song.

  • that`s messed up putting Paul`s yearbook photo in there.. I bet he`d be pissed if he knew. That sux.

  • @permanentgrin that pic has been around for many many years

  • I Love the Elder and appreciate the leap into something different...And there was a concept behind it that never materialized. Some excellent layering of strings on this album..Odyssey the best..

  • that's the UNPLUGGED version of WORL WITHOUT HEROS

  • great album! their they showed their talent of songwriting!

  • Don't expect them to play anything from the 80s other than "Lick it Up." That and their new song from Sonic Boom, "Modern Day Delilah," are the only new songs that were played when I saw them last night. Everything else, with the exception of those 2 songs and "I Love It Loud," was ALL 70's KISS. I LOVED IT!!! But like I said, if you are only a fan of 80s KISS, like some claim to be (lame IMO) you may be disappointed with the set list! Great postings Orange, will subscribe for sure!!!

  • That's because they are doing the "Alive 35" tour and playing almost the whole set list from the original Alive album. They still play Heaven's on Fire and other 80's stuff. But, people want to hear all the great songs, there's not enough time for all of it!

  • @1985breezegirl most of kiss best music came during the 80's and 90's.

  • @1985breezegirl most of kiss best music came from the 80's and 90's

  • Not the best album, but it is another chapter that goes down in KISStory. It did have some good songs also & depsite what some might say I enjoy listening to it sometimes. Fave song from this album has gotta be Mr. Blackwell! I CAN'T get enough KISS! Saw them in Greenville SC for the Alive 35 Tour last night. They will ALWAYS kick ass in my opinion, and kick ass they did last night!!! I will say one thing tho in case someone who is only a fan of 80s KISS plans on going....(continued in next post

  • Been a Kiss fan since 75, when I was 4 years old, and I have to say that the Elder is also one of my fave records by them. It's sad that they and the fans, talk such shit about it. It's the most varied and interesting record that they ever made.

  • Giving 'The Elder' its due, it's not a terrible album, just sort of.......different and somewhat interesting. A real departure for the guys at that time. Probably a bit too much of one. Definitely an adventurous work. I'll have to listen to some more.

  • misunderstood record!!!!!its great!!!!

  • This album has stood the test of time! anybody who claims to be a kiss fan and claims this album is shit, simply cannot fathom the band progressing in any way. from a musical perspective and songwriting! A very cool album indeed, by any standard!!!!!

  • a very underrated LP

I like this LP theres some great Songs

on this lp, unmasked is awsome to

  • The Elder was a great album... one of my all time classic faves

  • Wow, save for a few decent moments, this album is awful! I'm not dumping on the guy who made this video. He is obviously a big fan, and that's cool. But IMO this album generally stinks, especially when compared to great KISS albums like Alive, Destroyer, Rock and Roll Over, etc.

  • rock and roll over sucks.alive isnt a studio album so you cant count that.destroyer is good froma commercial stand point ans thats it.musically the elder is kiss better effort.the elder, creatures of the night, crazy nights, revenge and hotter then hell are kiss best.the rest fall far behind.

  • Just because Alive isn't a studio album doesn't mean that you can't count it! It is a great album! But the fact is, you and I should not get together and listen to KISS! We totally disagree on our choices! Oh well, happy listening!

  • i agree.i have taste in music and you dont.

  • Hmmm, somehow I doubt that!

  • This is my actual favourite album....

If you listen to the whole story, it's great...Minus the "Dark Light"....It's basically a musical...And it's great!

  • 5:14 very funny!

  • I think you are very generous for your rating on this album. Even Ace and Gene said it was crap.

The only good song is I. l would rate the album 4 out of 10.

  • Your favorite???...Destroyer, Rock & Roll Over, Alive, Love Gun...You've gotta' be kidding...I thought Ace had some good parts in the Elder, Dark Light and Mr. Blackwell rule...Paul actually does a lead in World Without Heros...Go figure...Flaming Youth forever!!!

  • My fave album...just see my username LOL

    AWESOME

  • Yeah, I see your username. I will never say this is my favorite album, but I will defend it if anyone thinks this is complete trash. It doesn't really sound like a KISS album, but its still good

  • This personally is my favourite album that Kiss ever did. The Oath is my fav off of it. What everyone else thinks & with no disrespect at all to you either - Horsepuckey! - I say it's their best. The sales never showed it - Perhaps if they should have went ahead & made the damn movie-things would have turned out different. Christopher Makepeace was a young up & coming movie star & I think it would have worked out awesome. The movie sells the soundtrack - not the soundtrack sells the movie!

  • I don't get it. I know a lot of people who say this is trash. But it's not. Some of the best guitar work if you ask me. Based on Genes' short story about an orphan boy chosen to become a hero, The Elder is an adventure in music. True, you wont find any "Cold Gin" or "Rock and Roll Hell" type songs on here but, I love it all the same. I loved it when it was released and I love it now. Besides, there are other songs they did that are less than perfect...

  • I wouldn't go that far and say it has some of the best guitar work, I will say it's an overlooked album

  • I totally agree 247boogyman

  • I love this lp/Tape i got it in

1990, SORRY But Ace was pulling NO shows

during the recording sessions, Ace F**ked it up him self.

  • I like the album too. It was the look that sucked. Ace despised this album. I believe he once said that he smashed a copy of it against the wall before he quit the group.

  • You heard correct, Ace was made that this work got toned down without his premission. Ace couldn't work with them anymore.

  • Hey It's Teri-what are you working on next for us all?

  • I have decided to retire. Just kidding, right now I can't do anything, my internet for my base computer has stopped working and I uninstalled something that makes the video clips work, so right now I'm on vacation

  • Nooooo, pls do somethig to fix it...

  • That was a sarcastic comment I made to Tom. I'm back making videos again, you can go to my profile and see the three videos I've made since my return

  • I'm sorry Orangeman! I was caught in total panic ... I forgot to control the date of your comment... then it was too late to stop mine!

  • Wow, where did you find some of these pictures? I know there is one KISS book with some excellent photos, I think its called 'the early years'? Anyway, I love the Elder, like I love all KISS albums and eras. Nice job!

  • My sourses for all the photos I got are listed on my page. I got 99% of them from kissforums . de

  • Certainly not a typical KISS album, but since I was and still am a KISS zombie I accepted it from the beginning! I took it as a different musical expression from them, just like there is truly no "bad" pizza (sometimes it's a bit bland) there is no bad KISS song to me! Nice job as usual!

  • wow, you accepted it immediately?

  • once again great stuff escape from the island, the oath,i and dark light are my favs.i don`t care what anyone says this is a great album nothing wrong with a change

  • Thank you, this album is different and it's far from being their worst album

  • When I first got this album, and played it,my first reaction was, "what the hell is this crap?". I tried to listen to it a few times, but just could not tell myself, that this was KISS. It has always reminded me of someone else, something that I had heard before, but cant quite put my ear on it.IF I had to pick 1 song, its a toss up between "The Oath" and "Dark Light". Having said that, your vid and editing are top notch, and better then The Elder itself.

  • Wow thank you. Then again I don't know how big of a compliment that is since you don't like this album that much lol

  • At 5:35, perfect timeing with the solo. Absolutely perfect and it even looks like it could have been from a music video!

    p.s

what is your fav song from The Elder?

  • hmm.. It's between "The Oath" "I" and "Under The Rose" I might go with The Oath

  • The last "song" on the album here is what really happned. Frodo got lost Escaping from the Island and he took a wrong turn after reaching Mr. Blackwells estate. He ended up Under the Rose instead of at Mt. Doom. Really...it's a TRUE story!!!

  • Interesting.. lol

  • Ok...I can take the abuse! I'll admit it...I REALLY like this album. I didn't at the time it was released but shortly after I bought it and listned to it quite a few times and sucked it in that Peter Criss really had left...I did like it, alot. I think it is a really unique album with some extremely under rated song writting. It just fit well as a KISS album, but in my opinion it is a good album in general.

  • If anyone gives you trouble I'll delete their comments and remind them that we all have different choices of music. There are some pretty good songs on here, The Oath, I, Under The Rose, it's not a bad album, it just doesn't sound like a KISS album

  • I meant to say "DID NOT" fit well as a KISS album!! Ok...Good album = yes. Good KISS album = no.

  • Great Video Orangeman! i havent seen this many great pics before of this Album! Very Professional Production! Mr Blackwell is one of my favorites driving late at nite!

  • Thank you for your compliment :) Baby Driver should be one of your favorite songs driving lol

  • my friends dancing to Baby driver is the funniest stuff you;ll ever see! LOL!

  • Hey You, it's Teri. i always loved this album. I think you've done an acceptional job with this. I think this was a way of showing how diversified KISS can be.

  • Thank you. Yeah KISS showed a different side of them, a way different side of them lol

  • Oh, and thanks again for another great vid!

  • No problem, I should of asked to use you dark light solo.

  • I left a bigger comment but I don't think it posted.

  • This album was so different than anything else Kiss put out that I hated it. Maybe I should get it and listen to it again. By the way why is the CD track listing so different than the original album? I have always wondered about that.

  • This is the order that KISS wanted the songs in the first place. I put the songs in order according to a website that I found I'll send it to you via e-mail

  • It is a little confusing when you know an album in a certain track listing and then the CD comes out and it is a totally different track listing.

  • lol sorry, I can't help you there.. I never had to experience that

  • I know that most of Kiss fans don't like this album, but it has a very special place in my heart. Thanks Orangeman334

  • No problem, I didn't like this album at first but after listening to it with an open mind I decided it's not a bad album

  • I agree about the open mind! It would have been a great soundtrack anyway...

  • I ditto that! But after playing Hard Rock for ten years i guess they needed to get emotional! I have frieds that hate KISS but love only this one album ... go figure!

  • Ha wow, you need new friends lol

  • And the pictures of the band behind the drums is just the band fooling around with photographer Waring Abbot,i got the photobook from his pictures done by Paul and Gene..

  • I know that, I was kidding, didn't you see the * that said the fun fact may not be true

  • yeah, but it went by really fast :)

  • ok, well I'm going to get back to saving pictures for my next music video

  • too bad you didn't had the Elder Media Collection dvd.I could have send mine, the footage i used for my version..

  • awesome.. I was going to ask for some footage but I decided I wouldn't. Well at least I had enough photos lol

  • Good job really good pics & editing!

  • Thank you, I had to go back and re save all my pictures because I only saved the thumbnails which gave me blurry pictures.

  • theres no high quality option :( but good video! :)

  • Yes there will be one, HQ doesn't work when I first upload my videos.

  • HQ is working now
