I have to disagree. Listen to Chris Cornell now. He still has a great voice, but it has clearly diminished over time. You sound amazing dude, so I recommend you get famous fast before those silver tonsils quit on you.

But we don't know why Chris' voice has "thickened" (actually now he is starting to sound better with almost the same range, listen to some recent shows). It's probably because he wasn't using proper technique for extended periods of time (or perhaps due to drugs or what have you), but that does not mean it's not possible. Listen to Ted Neeley who in his 60s sound better than ever before with the exact same range.

Well, as of his last Audioslave album, he sounded to be at his all time low. His range is fine, but the grit was not. Other examples include Robert Plant, Sully Erna, and Bruce Dickinson, all fantastic singers who have lost some of their sound over time. I will look into Cornell's more recent recordings, and check out Ted Neely though. There are always exceptions, so either of us could be wrong or right.

Obviously age does outrun us all at various speeds (less if you proactively train your muscles or whatever), and the vocal chords are not exempt. I do think that he has been doing something incorrect, and was probably pressing it before by ignoring warning signs. But from what he himself has said he has not had any surgery for vocal nodules or the like, but had a few voice lessons to learn to use his voice a different way. After that it's just a matter of taste.
