Is there any update on this little girl? I hear things about the ability of very young people to recover from things like this - the brain being very adaptive. It will be very interesting to hear her progress.
I am doing some studies of A&P, But i was wondering what kind of effects a cyst that big would have on the mental capacities of a person.
I also wonder about the brain matter that should have been there. will it grow back now that its gone? Was it compressed against the skull? Or never there in the first place?
it should reinflate over a decade or 2 depending on the care the patient gets. there may be mental imparment prior to surgery, not because of the cyst's presence entirely, but because it puts pressure on surrounding blood vessels going to functioning tissues. there may be permanent brain damage, with this size, probably noticeably by mental function. remember, most brain tissue is not neurons, but the spongy material which support and cushions it. and the brain can share tasks among many circuits
i wouldnt be at all surprised if they put a saline pouch in there to support the tissue so there isnt just a big air filled hollow area in the brain, but a small tube through the skull to relieve pressure to allow the tissues to grow to fill it in. its unlikely that area will have even 1/1000th of the neuron density of any other part of the brain, but the cushioning cells grow at a decent rate all through life. lol, i bet if they gradually injected stem cells, normal tissue would regrow.
It's actually a type of tapeworm larvae. The cyst is the sac that they form in. That's why it's so important to get it out of the brain--if it ruptures, all the tapeworms will be inside of the brain.
What exactly is inside one of these cysts? it looks like just liquid but is there also a worm or something? What do you do with the space left by the cyst?
yes this was on TV about the hydatid cysts. When a human gets infected, it interupts the dog tapeworm's life cycle. The worms get basically trapped inside the human host with nowhere to go. They don't feed on the human body so aren't really parasites. Sometimes the cyst forms in the abdomen where it can grow to the size of a basketball. what's amazing in this clip is that with this huge thing taking over the poor boys skull, he still survived.
Does the brain fill up a lot of that space as the child grows up? God gave you surgeons and nurses an amazing gift to save lives. Thank the Lord for people like you. :)
Its amazing how big that was. If the space is not filled after wards wouldnt the brain be able to move around in the skull to much and cause serious problems Im guessing thats why you have to fill the area up? Also if that ruptured it would kill the patient correct?
That was amazing! I am shocked at the size of it. And the fact it came out of a child. God bless that child. And the surgeon and doctors and nurses involved in such a surgery.
Did the child have impaired function before and/or after surgery? The size of the cyst is shocking. Does the brain grow somehow to fit the empty space left by the cyst?
yes, mild motor/cont pre and post op equal, and speech which recovered post op, following the child, and there was empty space, further development/scans will be posted,

Well, stem cells is a ray of hope in terms of repairs, for many with tissue loss leading to fuctional impairment

very true. it would be interesting to follow someone on treatments like that. like Flowers For Algernon come true, hopefully not the end though.
