god i hope the JWST makes it into space by 2016 and that funding isnt cancelled. it would be a great asset to science and i hope american politicians can focus and get their prorities straight (which, at the rate they're going isnt too likley XD).
What if there wasn't more matter than antimatter and that the matter that survived just happened to be a clump that was not in direct contact with a clump of antimatter? What if there is a whole half of the universe made up of antimatter and it's so far away from the galaxies made of matter that they almost never interact. Would we be able to differentiate between matter and antimatter galaxies if they're far apart? If they meet, could they explain gamma ray bursts???
There is an answer, and it lies with the one thing no one seems to have picked up on in popular media. There are TWO kinds of "particles" in one sense. Those that have antiparticles and those that do not. The latter would not have been disturbed by either kind of matter in the beginning. But, what if these unpaired particles interract with antimatter differently in some way? Consider this, two gamma ray photons can either be the end product of a collision or can create an electron/positron.
@TaePoDongIII Well, there's Orion but there isn't a launch vehicle to get it into space. Thanks to politics and the lack of funding that goes with it, what ever we end up with wont be near as cool or versatile as the shuttles, but, the positive side, each launch and recovery should be safer and cheaper.
If the assholes in DC get off their lazy asses that is.
Lets put it this way. God made the big bang and now he's sitting back and watching. happy now, you crazy ass religious people? Im catholic, but Im planning on being an astrophysicist. I try to keep my God and science separate. The more we learn about the universe, the better.
the universe did not emerge from the contact of subatomic particles of opposite charge. if subatomic particles existed, then there was a universe already.
he should say the current iteration of the universe or something like that, right?
Interesting! But do we know for a fact that the Big Bang is how the universe was "made"? Has this theory been successfully practically proven to be the end all answer to this question? Are our scientists not open to the idea that universe was existent and oh I don't know just been there since time imemorial without a begining or an end? After all it is only our perception is it not?
@racerxsfx it is a fact that the universe is expanding. it is a fact, that it rapidly expanded from a smaller size. And it is a fact, that in conditions back then no galaxies or stars existed.
It is not proven, that it was the beginning of everything. Only that it happened once and we don't have a clue what was before or how it started.
Anti-Matter doesn't have much of a riddle. It's simply matter with the opposite charge. When anti-matter comes into contact with normal matter, all the stored energy is released annihilating both making the most effective explosive possible.
When the universe was made, matter and anti-matter had nearly equal amounts. The two annihilated each other and we were left with the small imbalance that we know as our universe. Had the imbalance been different, we would be anti-matter or not here.
Can't wait for this episode. Haven't had a Cosmic Journeys in a while, and the stuff going on at CERN right now is about to break open our understanding of the universe.
According to standard THEORY, modern THEORIES of ...
Fascinating, however these days theories are always stated as facts. Although things might seem to point in that direction remember you need yet to prove it.
@TouchMyAvocado ... are you an idiot? Do you not realise there's a difference between "theory" (colloquial) and "theory" (scientific)? Do you not realise the difference between "theory" (scientific) and "fact"?
One very interesting story is the use of antimatter (anticarbon) to power the advanced spacecraft, often seen. The trick is the containment. It is hard to imagine the power provided by this but it is used extensively, so the story goes. It is also said that there is a small asteroid, under 1 km of ice, at the south pole, that contains much anticarbon.
Einstein and Tesla were missionaries who volunteered to help us develop.
when mars is terraformed, a NWO will be established on it and used for military only purposes and research. Anti matter missiles will be mass made and used to conquer earth. Thank you very much.
Is anti-matter the same thing as Dark matter please reply back soon P.S. Don't call me and idiot I love science I wanna be a scientist when i grow even though I have tourette syndrome I love science :D
@pokecollector1232010 No anti-matter isn't the same as dark matter. From what I know, Anti-matter and normal matter spring form nothing at the same time, Then collide back to nothing at the same instant.
Dark matter is smaller then anything known now but it's gravity is important in making the galaxies. Another name for dark matter is WIMPS. Dark matter also doesn't interact with anything including itself, so it doesn't reflect light. Anti-matter does reflect light.
anti-matter is not "nothing." without anti-matter, matter has no form. models of the universe made no sense until anti-matter was accidentally discovered. then all of a sudden, the models started looking exactly like what really existed. anti-matter, like dark energy, is fascinating for what we do not know about them. it sounds like we are learning a lot more now. this is just too cool!
I can't wait for this video to come out next week. What's the running time? I hope the LHC comes up with some answers by 2013. You know I've got a couple of pounds of extra anti-matter that I could spare. Just in case anyone would like to have a look :-)
Was always interested in astronomy, that which is outside the confines of this rotating Planet. Anti-Matter, and Dark-Matter seem to be out of reach of us humans.

@Stackondat oh no that's wrong. anti-matter is the same as normal matter, but an anti-matter particle have the exact opposite properties except for mass which is the same matter and anti-matter. where as dark matter is totally diffrent and yet not completely understood

My interest is piqued. Anti matter is crazy. They have a isolated a tiny amount at CERN. Isolating and storing it is a slow process. A gram of anti-hydrogen is 6.023 x 10^22 atoms which is a lot. The last time I looked, it will take CERN more then a billion years to generate one gram!

It is absolutely imperative to separate natural sciences from religion - any religion.
Natural sciences is
1) not theistic, and
2) not atheistic.
For that is not what natural sciences is about. You cannot mix science with religion.
Your religion, if any, is in this context a private matter.
