  • These bunkai don't look applicable to me... It's like trying interpret a poem literally... and worse, one whose words have been changed in the many copies made in the passage of time... In the worst case scenario, this shotokan "poem" may have no sense at all...

  • all right, this could be a zillion-dan great freaking master, mas this bunkai demo is an all time sucker... For example, check this out: youtube.com/watch?v=txP8vWt3xQE&feature=related

  • 0:15. Fail. ^^

  • very good

  • toé tes un kata

  • thats how you bunkai right there

  • same old boring , illogical , ineffective , waste of my time "bunkai".....when are you people gonna learn this isnt "bunkai" ? This is like a elementary / seasame street version contrived by the Japanese to actually hide real bunkai. Once you've seen real bunkai demonstrated , you know the difference !! My point can be seen in the bunkai demonstrated by karatascosaintemarg's channel. That is all.

  • There is no right or wrong, as long as you can justify your actions its fine!

  • The music sucked. Namegaishi (returning wave kick) could also be used two other ways:

    1) defence against gedan mawashi geri, similar to Muay Thai shin block

    2) hooking an opponents leg from behind, tripping him while pulling him off balance...

  • It is true that many practitioners who seek to do a kata "pretty" they succeed at the expense of effectiveness .. (very beautiful to the eye but little practice in applying)

The katas are a very useful tool for the practitioner of karate and has many different applications for each movement of attack and defense karate practitioner depends on its correct use obviously the result of the application of a technique depends on how long it takes practice

  • katas were created based on experiences of the teachers .. in the case of tekki seen for instance that had a wall or stood on the brink of something and that is not protected nor ATANCE back from that side ..

In a real fight would only apply some movements of a kata or combine attacks and protection in courts of various kata .. Constantly practicing kata, the practitioner is able to react instinctively muscle strength regulates respiration.

  • Funny and cofusing

Attackers are the ones adapting to kata execution...

I'd expect much more for a bunkai from a such respected adept...

  • @DrSiegal : yes, one would think. (see my comment above). It is my opinion (and many other senior American karateka, that this type of "bunkai" is just an elementary example, a "surface" of what's really underneath. The 'old school' have tried to hide many of the efficient , "real" bunkai applications from the west for decades. They know that once you begin to see the practicality , then the "secrets" are unveiled , and the "masters" loose their "monopoly" on karate.....

  • @hazor777

I got a million dollars and a fist size diamond in my house that I'm preventing for everyone to see... even my own familiy is starving I'd be lolyal to the "hide it" rule... cause I don't want to loose my monopoly over them...

Would you belive a man saying that???

  • Great performance of kihon bunkai of tekki

  • good job.

    good aplicattion

  • i am from shotokan but i hadnt read any proper books untill i defected. (eg Funakoshi)

my techers were too rigid in tradition

looking at this video, the way master is fighting will get him done in.

    But this version is intitutionalized!

    Three possibilities spring to mind:

1- the applications are not done properly (position/posture) to demonstrate resemblance to kata.

2- these are for kids or outsiders

3- the master doesnt know better

    4- i dont know better

    i will go with 1 or 2.

  • Everyone seems to be concerned about whether this bunkai is the "correct one" or not.

For historical purposes only, I believe that there may have been a structure by which the kata was initially based.

However, I do not believe that there could possibly be a "correct" way. I think that this is the way of karate. To be versatile, and able to react in any situation. Never to be rigid, as there are never any absolute answers.

  • i agree brother,

most katas were created by teachers to record prefered fighting techniques, or less frequently a varied workout.

There must have been specific applications to every move in "fighting" katas.

But no body will know the intentions or exact performance of the creator of each kata.

beatifuly now we have infinite number applicatons.

We all have to try all applications for a move in training and select applications that are safe and effective to use in real combat.

  • i've read an article that seems to refer to the most realistic bunkai for tekki yet.. the first block being a shuto to the jugular, then you pull the opponent into your elbow (and hit ofc) (temple region) then you grab by the hair (or year) and punch mawashi tsuki (or w/e) into his chin.. then you position yourself to stomp on his skull @_@" not (karateka like) of course but think of this: when this kata was made up it were diffrent times (kill or be killed :( )

  • Who knows what's right or wrong? But I learned the first move as not a block, but a nukite to the throat. It is similar to your shuto application, but it comes straight out. I don't know what's right, but your, technique mine, or the master's in this video could all work. I certainly don't claim to know more than the master in this video. I honestly believe kata can have different bunkai interpretations and still be right. Now, I think I'm gonna get it for that comment.

  • @njtr "I learned the first move as not a block, but a nukite to the throat."

It can be both, which I think you have discovered via the rest of your post. I was taught it as a block, but I deduced for myself it could also be a strike to the throat or eyes (or groin, for that matter). That's the beauty of kata. I have worked out no fewer than 7 possible bunkai for the salutation in Naihanchi shodan and courtesy of the internet I've found variations of those.

  • @njtr this is japaneesse bunkai of shotokan karate.....I dont like shotokan katas bcs there is no MA in them...just blocks and kicks....katas from other styles are deadly combinations of martial art karate......in fudokan karate we have katas from shotokan, shito ryu, uechi ryu, shorin ryu and 6 nes katas which are fudokan katas....we practise tekki shodan by okinawan bunkai...if you see that kind of bunkai you would said that it is not bunkai!! you would see MA in that!!

  • @TheFudokan Yes. There is basic bunkai, which this is. A true shotokan curriculum is VERY, (let me repeat that) VERY basic, up until black belt. Once a person reaches black belt, he has learned HOW to do karate technique. The idea is not to know as many techniques as humanly possible, but instead to know how to do any technique with proper focus, timing, etc. Once a person reaches black belt, than it gets a lot more self defense oriented. Until than it is basic, like this. It takes time.

  • @njtr in japanesse bunkai of shotokan there are just blocks and kicks, bcs funakoshi wanted to create modern karate..but okinawans made katas like combinations of deadly combinations..we do teki shodan okinawan bunkai..in that kata you have about 10 and more combinations that works in real situation and those combinations kill, but it is very brutal way of practising and it is very rough..but okinawans vere practising katas like that 500 years ago and now....

  • @TheFudokan That sounds pretty nice. Is there some good tekki shodan bunkai on here that you could direct me to? I'm always open to new bunkai.

  • @njtr I think that there is not real okinawan bunkai on youtube.....as I said kata is combination of deadly combinations which when you look kata dont look so dangerous....okinawans dont show real bunkai to others.....that means that they would reveal the secret which kata is hiding...

  • No good!

  • Tekki, as is Naihanchi in Okinawa, is for grappling. I have seen techniques and bunkai shown from this kata on the ground. Bunkai from this kata can be done both standing and on your back. This guy in video is an idiot.

  • hahaha roningb, would you dare to (together with acerwk, jadewillow and Chrissycole64) stand in front of this "idiot" on tatami? Believe me, by posting such comments about a legendary Master, you're not making yourself look like an expert. On the contrary, you're just showing what kind of an idiot you are.

  • You are totally right . Osaka is a great karate-ka , but this interpretation isn't useful .

  • A disgrace.

  • It's bad Bunki like this that has made karate a joke when it comes to self defense. And to think somebody had to kiss this guy's ass to get a black belet (when he obviously doesn't know anything other than kicking and punching

  • I agree with gaugustcrane: tekki shodan is throws and joint locks using a horse stance (U are shoulder to shoulder in a horse stance using nasty foot sweeps to up root your opponent) not much striking in it.

  • Absolutely not possible. The attackers just wait after each attack so that the master looks good? These bunkai could only work if the master knew his attackers' plans BEFORE the fight and if the bad guys were polite enough not to think and adapt to his moves. This is not a street fighting kata and these bunkai don't work in reality.

    It's for grappling.

  • What's for grappling? Tekki Shodan? Please elaborate. What are your credentials? Are you a shotokan practitioner? This is not representative of a "gang" attack. The speed is meant to be instructional, not real-world. Bunkai is application of technique. Kata bunkai are taken in pieces, or in whole. In a fight, as in the first technique, you block, hook punch or elbow strike. That may be all you need. It's doubtful you'd ever face three attackers and immediately go into Tekki Shodan.

  • Hi,

I trained for some time in Shotokan in Britain and have examined their bunkai as well as Wado explanations and other styles trying to punch-kick-block with this great series of kata. Try ko-do ryu links here to see what you think. In our opinion (I'm a 5th dan) we believe that this whole kata was for wrist locks and grappling and our bunkai demonstrate that perfectly with each move from the kata completely fitting its bunkai. Have a look and see what you think.

    Best regards.

  • Hi. Kata is just an exercise. If everyone went bare knuckle full force all the time, who the heck would be able to train on a regular basis? We'd all be nursing our wounds. I'll keep an open mind about your grappling thoughts, but I thought Funakoshi stressed mainly strikes. Any sites you can suggest to enlighten me? I know Funakoshi trained with Master Kano. I'll admit these techniquse are impractical, but I thought this kata was for your bak to a wall, river, etc. Greetings from the USA.

  • It is sometimes called a hallway by styles that have bunkai like this but the bunkai i've seen from before Shotokan has all been grappling
