German ppl can not to understand what we mean when we ask and speak about east and west Germany....we speak about the differences-about how one country like die Ddr can to be modern and why Bulgaria can not to be modern-why Die Ddr can to be build and why Bulgaria and Romania and Poland -they just can not...I think they can't understand that eastern governments after their unification made a bad "deals" for their own ppl...for example my country-Bulgaria
great video . i would love it if someone would do a video showing how the former east germany has changed physically and how much still looks the same. The recent history of germany has been forgotten in the usa unfourtantly .i am not a communist but i find it interesting how east and west developed differently and then uniteted . I hope things are going well in germany and that the world recession is not hurting you all too much. thank you for taking the time to make the video.
Thanks for your comment, it's really appreciated. I'm not German, I'm English but i visit Germany a fair bit. I'm studying to be a microbiologist at university but my main other interest is history and travelling which draws me back to Germany time and time again! I visited Dresden, Leipzig, weimar and Frankfurt (oder) last summer, all were in the former East. I may make a similar video soon. Thanks again, hope you are well.
I'm very interested in Eastgermany's history and USSR. This video takes me 20 years back :) I've been to Berlin 4 times, and i'm going there in the morning! Actually i'm going to live right at Alexanderplatz on 9th floor. Can't wait! Thanks for 4 amazing minutes ;)
Haha! Thanks a lot. I assume you're staying at the Park Inn? Let me know how it goes. I'm off tomorrow morning (Strange eh?) with my old secondary school to help them out for a few days. Hope you enjoy yourself!
Nice Video well done. I grew up in East Berlin but been living abroad for the past 8 years. Personally I think it is a shame that once the wall came down they got rid of some of the monuments such as the Lenin Monument at Platz der Vereinten Nationen. Been to Ukraine in May and was amazed by how similar East Berlin was to the place. Even had a "Youth Railway" similar to the one in Wuhlheide
Hi thanks for the comment. Did you go to the youth railway as a kid? I was in Dresden over the summer and that was like being in a different world. I'm guesising with so many buildings built after the war they've found it hard to remove the ddr image.
Thanks for your comment. At 1:27 it is in Lichtenberg - just outside the Magdelenen (not spelt right! but similar) Strasse U bahn station near Stasi HQ. Personally i wouldnt go out of my way to find it as there are PLENTY of similar looking streets in Eastern Berlin. I can think of a similar one on Strasse der Pariser Komunee outside the Ostbahnof. I stayed in a hotel on there a few weeks ago. Hope this helps :)
Die Ketten der DDR waren aus Eisen und rosteten... die der BRD sind aus Gold und rosten nicht... das ergibt die BRDDRÖ mit 15 Millionen Türken und übrigem Gesindel das noch zu beseitigen sein wird...
nice effect makes the picts look as if they were taken in ddr's time. i traveled to berlin in '92, but was too little to want to shot some foto of east berlin.
Great Video! I liked the pictures and music a lot. I visited most of those sites when I was in Berlin in 2004. It brought back the memories of that trip.
hello! I'm from Mexico, and study History at university... I saw your video (it's amazing!) because, this kind of pics are really rares in American continent, they're exotic (hehehe)... so,there still are many socialist monuments in that part of Germany?? When was the last time that you were there??
although these are of lenin, stalin etc. In areas where the majority still vote for the socialists, people campaign to keep the statues, or so i have been told. In the city of Chemnitz, the city council were going to tear down the giant Karl Marx head in the centre, but decided to keep it because it represented the culture of the ddr.
Generally, you can find memorials to communist workers throughout the old GDR. I was last there in Febuary 2007, but will probably go again sometime in the next few years. If you want any of these photos sent to you to help with your studying etc, send me your email address in a private message and ill be more than happy to send you them :)
Gute Nacht!
great video, but for all the people who lives in the DDR ist it a history of there life. if you think that the "Stasi" and the "Prisoners" are the real DDR, better you read a book or ask the people. The "System" of the DDR was a small part and not the life !!!
thank you for this - the images and the music from Goodbye Berlin are a nice mix. I love Berlin as it is now, and have so many impressions and memories of Berlin - Hauptstadt der DDR.
I'm not from Berlin myself, but i have visited 3 times in the last two years. The music is the intrumental version of Summer 78 by yan Tiersenn. I aimed to create my own version of the opening credits of 'Good bye Lenin!' so yes, you're correct!
That was really good. I went to Berlin last year and visited many of the places you have pictured. It was amazing that one wall can totally seperate a city in modern times. Its just unbelievable. I really want to go back there. After studying the Berlin Wall it makes me want to go back even more.
now i want to go back there. I went in winter so everything looked worse than this which was a shame. Though i never want to go back to Sachsenhausen, that was sickening.
Good work..despite the pictures were taken just recently, they seem as they were images from so much time ago. And then I think that despite these images give me the sense & atmosphere felt in another far era, I realize that the wall that divided two worlds existed no so much time ago...
omg james 28,119 views for this?! You really do have a lot of time on your hands!! Haha ;P
