Pteranodon was the largest species of flying reptile, Rhamphoryncus was much smaller... it could have been a Pterodactyl, which was larger than Rhamphoryncus(or was it vice versa?). Who knows, it could have been a Quetzalcoatlus... supposedly, just as large or larger than Pteranodon. Anyways, gotta love the Harryhausen special effects...CGI is lame, compared to this.
this fight is not really good both animals are wrong cause we know rhamphrohynchus has a long tail and has a wing span of only 6 feet! While pteranodon had a wingspan of 26 feet! and why do both animals have wings like bats!!!!!! cause there wings are made of a extra long finger! How could they get that wrong when they have great finds of both animals.
@lifeform106 Scientific accuracy wasn't this movie's top priority, dude. The fact that it's got cavemen and dinosaurs living at the same time should have been a pretty big indication of that.
@InfernoRodan Actually, Harryhausen was fully aware that they did not live in the same time period. His intention was to make a different tipe fantasy movie, like with Valley of Gwangi and the end scenes of Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger. Note: this last movie is NOT related to Rocky.
@baranguirus Was Harryhausen fully aware that Rhamphorynchus and Pteranodon were not the same size? Because if this was accurate, which it is far from, Pteranodon's wingspan would be on the order of 23-26 ft., while Rhampho had a 6 ft. wingspan. I don't think a Rhamphorynchus would have the guts to approach Pteranodon, even if they lived in the same period.
@SiamotyrannusX Well, I guess that was streaching it. But I guess the studio wanted a successful midair battle and not just an abduction. Rays first concept art only showed the abduction, so I think the fight wasnt his plan. I guess its a bit like the raptors in Jurassic Park, which are called velociraptors even though they were clearly Deinonychus.
Hatchling pterosaurs are already close to able to fly, & may not need to be fed much by their folks.
