This having a date of Feb 1, 08 probably pre dates the iphone 3G S but that iphone can use the Nike + kit.

I dont think so I just bought a pair today. There is a spot in the bottom inside of the shoe where the chip fits snugly. And I figured out that it actually works with your ipod off as well.

As for the thing at the end of the clip I'm not sure I would trust that to hold it in place as well w/o flying out. But maybe someone else can give you a better idea.

Yep, the 2nd generation ipod touch has a built-in receiver, so all you have to buy is the sensor that goes in/on your shoe...they're on amazon for about $19.

And the battery life is more or less a year, which is not bad.
