  • cute couple, hope they are doing ok

  • Iree- My sister lives over there and she's Retarded ( Wow what a shock)...lmao

  • Yes there was some domestic violence but that happens everywhere regardless of income. That doesn't make the whole family bad.

  • each day is about survival; family and making a better day than the one prior . . . for all those that decry them as dumb rednecks, I can only hope you have the same fortitude and conviction these brave people do.

  • As long as there is no opportunity in the area it's just a revolving door of despair.

  • This stupid Yankee "gt150 glas" thinks these people are trash, but there is no telling what this loser is like!

  • @queenlayna Sorry to offend you. I just do not agree with the morals of these people. Having children at twelve, swearing at your mom, hitting your wife, committing robbery. The list goes on. But I guess its ok because they are low income so they should not be held responsible for their actions.

  • @queenlayna Probably born with a silver spoon has no idea what hes talking about

  • I am a Yankee and proud of it (actually a lot prouder after watching this series) I started watching thinking I was going to see some good old folks. These people are trash. Disrespectful, lazy, welfare cases.Incest, alchoholism, drugs, wife beating. It is all depicted in the series. Why do people not see that. Aside of that they are not that bad off financially. I know a lot of people that are much worse off than them and much better people. I am so gad we won the war southerners are FUCKED UP !!!!

  • @gt150glas ha! You are so ignorant! Kentucky was a split state. Read history before you spew your dumb hate speech LOSER!

  • I've never been good working at the bank -- Never been good at slappin on paint -- Not too good at makin an engine crank -- But man ooohhh man -- i sure can drank -- But at 64 i'm no good at diggin coal anymore....lol

  • Why are we worried about every other country on the planet, yet we let our own citizens live like this. I live in Kentucky and this still isnt something that alot of people know or talk about. I love how everyone tells them to give up Mt. Dew and KFC. Come down here and check it out all they get in the in and out is soda! The closest grocery store is hours away! dont judge till you've lived it!

  • @triclove13 Yes so right you are - just walk a mile in their shoes - Mother used say to me, that the only time we should ever look down on somebody is to help them up - i was born in south east Ky -- Thank you mommy 1

  • @triclove13 People places and things - Well down here it's all about our family, and our friends, and our place..... because we don't have a lot of things .....

  • there simple people and they mean no harm to anyone, just trying to carve an existence out of what little is given to them - as for people getting angry because they take welfare - what other options do they have, there nothing to do there are they to starve? people should be complaning about the billions spent on wars on the otherside of the world than worrying about the tiny amount these people collect- just put the whole thing in perspective

  • I would fuck the shit outta that little blonde trailer trash whore. Then take her to a real fancy dinner at Sizzler.

  • @Mavrik612 wow youre such a badass...

  • Get off drugs turn off Tv , read some good books, go to church and never look down on someone unless its to help them up ...

  • Some hate seeing white babies born at this rate in America

  • I kilt bar when was three ...lol

  • Just cold zombielike people and concrete as far as the eye can see with blood in the streets , not safe to go downtown ! Thank God i'm from south east Ky.

  • gross and disgustinger

  • As someone from Perry County KY... I look at this and think "there but for the grace of god..." The rest of you can take your self-righteous attitude and shove it sideways. My parents got out and I don't have to live that life. Had they stayed I would have suffered the same lack of education and opportunity as the kid in this. I wish him all the best.

  • @lidjungle I was born in Hazard.. Perry Co Ky -- And not a day goes by that i don't thank God for my birth Place...

  • Clint's girlfriend is very pretty

  • hahaha..that took the cake.....my sister's retarded/////it's like a comic.......cant belive it

  • baibies....lmao...

  • dumber than dirt!

  • @tinywentz No they're poor and uneducated. That is the reality where they live.

  • Ma bowling looks fetching in that there striped dress? Shes only about 80 years of age shes a god damm mountain LOLITA ? Her two bit husband was only a hilly billy drunk with impotant thoughts?I will treat ya right ma, take ya bowling ive got the balls more than your husband? Ive got t shirts made with the slogan" MA BOWLING SUCKS BACK BONES OUT? Keep your beedy eyes off her shes mine ?

  • By God does this kid clint remind me of myself. When i tell ya that there is nothin more charming, and beautifull then a Blonde from the mountain region i mean it. Those of you who are critisizing clint FUCK OFF. He unlike most of his peers up on there has a head on his shoulders..

  • The girl at 0:50 is the hottest hillbilly I've ever seen.

  • kid's girlfriend is cute (or was cute, this is 11 years old already).

  • so sad hope the rock thrower got a slow painfull death

  • why does this looser has such a hottie girl?????

  • she should have shoved old hector up his ass men should NOT beat women

  • American authoritys can go to foregin contries and take down people, but they can't protect a woman hundred miles away that is being abused.

  • Domestic violence and abuse are a reality for far too many people, and not all of them are uneducated hillbillies, either. My father was a mathematician and university professor, and he abused my mom and brother and me, and he drove my brother to suicide and my mom to death by alcohol abuse. Now I'm a professor and I am married to another professor, and she is emotionally and physically abusive to me, too. I guess I just got taught that that's how love is. But I'm divorcing the bitch now.

  • @luv2bud hillbillies? I highly resent that. Who do you think you are? I am sick and damn tired of people like you putting down individuals like myself, who happen to be less unfortunate. Plus, not all people have the luxury of an education because of circumstances. a lot of the time, people had to drop out of school to help at home---to work in the fields or help raise their brothers and/or sisters. You sound to me like a selfish person who only cares about yourself. Think before you speak.

  • @laurelfan1 I didn't mean to insult anyone by using the word "hillbilly." I didn't realize that was a word that made some people angry. You are less unfortunate than me if you live in a beautiful place like what I've seen in these videos, surrounded by a caring community. Education isn't worth much if it doesn't help you to live better, and I think the life these people live is better than the life lived by most people in more developed ares with supposedly stronger economies. My apologies.

  • @luv2bud The word "hillbilly" hit a nerve when a read it. I absolutely hate that word. No offense at all to you. I am simply sick to death of the stereotypes placed on us. Yes, I feel very fortunate to live here It is very beautiful and full of life and a rich history. I'm proud of where I'm from. Ppl who have never had to truly struggle to survive have no idea what it's like. Poverty brings ppl together make them stronger. I also apologize. I'm sensitive when it comes to certain things.

  • @luv2bud btw--I mean to say less fortunate. Just so you know, I'm not stupid. I just had to put that as an end note. You were quite sarcastic in your comment as well.

  • @laurelfan1 Yeah, I can be a sarcastic son-of-a-bitch. I'm just lucky you aren't able to reach over and smack me upside the head. My wife would be happy to do it for you. She also says I'm selfish . . .but I say she's an abusive psycho bitch. Anyway, I guess my point in all of this is that there are assholes who enjoy hurting their so-called "loved ones" of all races, nationalities, levels of education, etc. No one has a corner on that market. Domestic violence sucks for everyone.

  • except for rmstudio and ivyherstory, the rest of comments on this page just shows stupidity and lack of compassion. I am a Southerner and let's just bring your happy asses here and make it on your own by just what you grow in your garden or sow with your hands. If you don't like the documentary, then shut the hell up. You don't make fun of people b/c you "think" they have less than you do. Did it ever occur to you that to them ," 'YOU" have less??? I've seen alot of compost in my life!jackasses

  • @TheLafemmegamer I could not agree more. These idiots could not survive one day living like some of us do. I live on less than $700.00 per month. Some idiots pay that much for a fucking handbag.

  • now in most the houses they have several beds in one room right? and you see a hell of a lot of kids running around there right? then when granny gets her groove on with pappy then i bet the roof raises off the house 3 feet and them poor kids have to lay there and listen to pappy pumping away. roflmao.

  • How are they doing now? would be good to see a followup on this clan

  • sounds like jody needs to meet hector!!!

  • @toadman692000 she doesn't want tiny stuff dude

  • @TheNewMusicNetwork wtf does that even mean??

  • I think the dudes GF is the only normal looking one in this Documentary .... Lol

  • 1:05 hot little piece of ass!

  • yeah its amazing he's with that girl!!!!

  • @grapesoda4me420 its lack of options...lmao

  • @grapesoda4me420 shes sort of cute but she's a fake blonde. they clearly bleached her hair for the show.

so not that special imo and she doesn't have blue eyes

    case closed

  • that chick is hot

  • Watched half of this last night....and thought a lot about the grandmother all day today. She humbled me. Here I have a college education, parents that gave me a great upbringing, a husband to die for....etc. But I think that lady is a better person than me, because I don't know if I could ever give unselfishly the way she does for her family. Her good karma points must be through the roof.

  • @MissNevada08 Thanks for being yourself -- Always remember the banana -- when it left the bunch, it got skinned .a good close-nit FAMILY IS WORTH IT'S WEIGHT IN GOLD ....

  • I do not understand why people hurt others for sport.

  • Damn hard working people that take care of their own

  • @bofts hard working??? you got to be joking me. what have they been doing all these time in the documentary?

  • trust me this boy aint fuckin cool i went to school with him and he was a dumbass punk.

  • these are good ppl.have good hearts, see that right away, sometimes money matters nothing most of these ppl know that, family is everywhing an having peace home food, u dont need much more, wanting more sometimes is having less

  • these were def taped in the early 90's

  • Shirley is smokin ! She could get a modeling contract to better her life, and make life a little easier ! She's foxy !

  • Shirley (0:30) is a fucking HOT little piece of ass.

  • Stfo gothbunny, we need male nurses like him to lift your fat ass when your in the hospital for heart failure. Take your fat homophobic ass some where else! Your probably pissed off because no one would ever want to touch your fat ass.

  • her sister's story breaks my heart

  • @ivyherstory at least now she won't be out on that street just a' struttin' dat ass

  • @NosyMcGee lol

  • The story about her sister's marriage was heartbreaking.

  • @jenzeppelin at least now she won't be out on that street just a' struttin' dat ass

  • @jenzeppelin at least now she won't be out on that street just a struttin' dat ass

  • You're delusional if you think anyone would even marry you, Professor Ignorant.

  • Just because I love the country and love these people does not make me ignorant. I have a bachelor's and I'm pursuing an M.A., and my daughter is poised to succeed as well. But I will raise her to be sensitive to all humanity - something your parents clearly failed to do.

  • Bless you, it's nice to hear someone speak up like you did here. I feel the same way about sersitivity and humanity. It's something that this country seems to have forgotten all about.

  • haha a nurse knew you were a fag stop the lies no woman would ever marry you and 1.5 million dollar home right wtf are you doing on you tube hating on people for go spend your fake money with your fake wife oops I mean your ass buddy and shut the fuck up.

  • All they do is sit around and try to up each other on sob stories.

  • If she was in my family and anybody touched her they better get to running cause they would get whiped good.

  • what a uncromfratble dinner conversation for the girl.

  • LOL I know.

  • I am from Tennessee and I have known people like this but they are the exception not the norm- at least where I am from.

  • Did I HEAR that right? That one of them set a fire and made the little girl stand in it...and then he tried to run over people with his pickup?" WTF!?

  • I know I had to play that bit twice to check I heard it correctly!

  • Samantha's husband, Jody Canada, tied a curtain around her (his wife) and made her stand and let it burn off of her. I'm sure he probably was violent with the two children though, too.

  • That teen couple at least WANT to get out of that mess.

  • Comment removed

  • That 17-18y/o couple are the smartest people in this film, despite how naive they are. Trying to get the fuck out of there at an early age is the best thing you could do.

  • Is he giving her weeds? XD

  • its all about family..isnt it?!?!?!

  • I'm using this documentary as a source for my master's thesis, and I read that police officers in some rural KY and WV counties make only minimum wage!!!! No wonder they weren't around to help her.

  • I live in KY and I've never heard of even city police making min wage but at the same time I've never seen people this ignorant in my life so who knows.

  • these people are not retarded you are.

  • These kids are so cute! She's like "if they don't have safe sex then I guess that's what they get!"

  • that lady is shy not retarded

  • i know they are not as easy going as they look , and their guffi way to talk can give you the wrong impression

  • Domestic violence seems to be a common occurance in these parts.

  • tulipchic,

Can you explain to us how you know that?

Your a moron living at the bottom of the world 9000 miles away.

Go fight a wild fire you fool.

  • I came to the conclusion because there were many reference to domestic violence in the doco. If it isn't a common occurance within the community, it certainly was within the family. Why don't you watch the doco again dipshit

  • Now we're learning! You don't blanket an entire region in a certain light b/c some domestic violence occurs there.

I'd guess DV is MUCH more commonplace in the inner Citys but never saw a doco on an inner city.

  • Pretty good documentary. Their Genetics are starting to look a little shitty though!

  • I live in Bowling Green Ky. I grew up in Edmonson Co and it wasn't that much different from what you see here, people appreciated things alot more then. It just goes to show that no matter how bad you think you may have it someone always has it worse. I love this documentary.

  • Ok I don't live in Eastern Ky but I do have some relatives there and some friends and I have yet to see a married 7th grader or pregnant one at that.

  • well it happens, not like she was implying in mass, but it happens just like it would in Boston or some place. I know of an 11 year old that married a 17 year old that was in 1989. But it isn't anymore commonplace that it would be anywhere else. People usually marry in their early twenties

  • My family is from around where this is and if any girl I knew of (my cousins and their friends) even mentioned a boys name they were on lock down! I admit they did end up getting married by the time they were 19, but that is alot diff than 13. Maybe in the very early 1900's but not in the past 100 years.

  • Shirley's a liar, I live where she's from, no one around here gets married in fucking 7th grade.

  • They do if they get held back a couple years with parents permission..I live in Arkansas and I have unfortunately seen that happen.

  • Not where Shirley's from. I live there, I think I would know.

  • hmmm...and you can afford a computer..wow.

  • LOL. You clever devil. Unlike these people, I actually have a job. That's just like one of you idiots, to believe everything you see on tv.

  • I apologize. I didn't mean no harm. It's just that I do need to take some stereotypes lightly. Like Clint, I wish I could rescue him. Because I know he has potential but doesn't know how to channel it, with no support. But I do see there is support, but just in the wrong aspect. in reality, most people there do live like that, and to be fair to the dilemma, the area is a beautiful spot. Nestled deep in the mountains. Good luck in what you choose to do, and I hope you have a strong family! Peace.

  • Parental consent is needed if under 18 years of age in Arkansas. Your parent must be present to sign the marriage book with the applicants when the license is issued. If a parent is unable to sign, certified papers for verification must be given. Males under the age 17 & females under 16 cannot marry without an Arkansas court order. This is usually given only in extreme circumstances, such as if the female is pregnant or the couple already has a child together.

  • Jazzybee1, just bc you personally don't see it doesn't mean that it hasn't happened. I am from ky and I have seen 12 yr old girls come out of hospitals with a baby in their arms. One was right across the hall from me when I had my daughter so just bc your not there to document it doesn't mean that it don't happen.

  • I had an x-ray the other day, and the radiographer asked if I was pregnant, I said no and made a joke about being a bit young (I'm in my late teens), and she said, " Oh no, the youngest I've seen is eleven."

Sounds like we had similar experiences lovergirl1, I was so shocked by it.

  • I would say so lol :) I would be shocked. Its a shame that they do get pregnant at that age.

  • I got married at sixteen and had three sons by the age of 21. I've been an upright person and raised sons I'm proud of. It depends on the persons maturity. I always knew what I wanted and it wasn't running around, going to clubs and doing all some of the silly things many young people do. To each his own.

  • I know it is hard to raise them when you are young since I as well was only nineteen when I had my daughter. I wouldn't trade it for the world though. But it is sad to see young kids still making the mistake. And you are right, to each their own. I for one can not judge.

  • Sounds like they have a lot of physical abuse going on there..sad.

  • OMG, someone hit her in the head and they didn't take her to the Dr. and that is why she is "retarded"...that is pure cruelty! I feel for the people who can't even get to a Dr. but if they could and didn't, how awful...the worst of it is to hit her with a rock in the head! How cruel! This just shocked me...sorry guys!

  • I live about 15 miles from these people and I can tell you that most of this scene was staged. Mostly the first two minutes. HBO knows how to make a good documentary.

  • Can you please give me exact location of this film site. You said you live only 15 minutes away. We are planning to visit where this was filmed and keep getting conflicting info as to exactly where this is located. I'll appreciate your response.

  • Let me give you some advice here. You don't want to go into these areas when your not from around there. These are mountain folk and they don't take well to strangers. Outsiders have come up missing & you better be ready to fight every man in the hollow. Now, you can think I'm talking shit here, but I'm telling you, if they even suspect your a revenuer, or anything else your gone friend. My Mom & Daddy were warned off from these parts. Fortunatly, it was a warning.

  • Give me the address. Im ready to go to war. Im not scared.

  • no how can you say that they never been here. we love new people

  • Not sure I understand the reply. What I do know though, is that myself & some other guys went to Hazard Kentucky to build a pool for a guy & they didn't like us at all. Most of the folks were carrying "BIG" caliber side arms, even in the grocery store. Was warned not to eyeball at any of the women. Just go in, buy your lunch and get out. Understand though, this was about 30 years ago? Our boss-man was from there and he said to be careful around folks. Don't talk to them, just work & leave.

  • Saul,Ky, perry county

  • What is staged and what are they really like then?

  • Iree, Clint, and the one in the black dress seem to be the only ones who have half a brain. Clint was the way he was because of his age. I hope he got out of there and made something of himself. It's been about nine years, does anyone have an update on them?

  • whats wrong about the way they live?? good old people from what i see-

  • Nothing wrong these people are just simple folks there are good sides and bad sides to all things.. The people that live were I live in the silicon valley are nothing but a bunch of self centered selfish people that in my honest opinion are no better than a poor person when it comes to values or whats truly important in life... They leave there parents in nursing homes and dont care about them and fight over there money.. Let their kids be punk kids that steal and materialistic.

  • Well put.

  • IM from ther dont get it twisted. for most people they do not live like this. its only a few bumbs. agine im from there but i speak diffrent walk diffrent and i act diffrent were not all like this.

  • I would assume that no one on here actually cares.

  • shawn stop lying, your more redkneck than these people, you didnt own shoes until last summer, i bought them for you, instead of denying your heritage be proud, talk about winning the cow milking contest at last years poke sallet festival.

  • man all shit aside its fucked up to think like that. i was only trynna make a point. but ur right this video only drags the educated working kentucky population down as low as the people on this 2% true video. i hope someday to smash that immage with the video im makeing. ill hit u upp when its done.

  • Let me tell you I came from the rich cool side of california.. And people here can be just as dumb and selfish and retarded. But there is a bigger picture here. That is the grandmother her who she is and how she is a caring and loving mother that does her best and does it in very kind and loving way.. She has little but gives of herself no matter what. She doesnt complain or fee she is owed or intitled to anything in life. She is happy she has what she has.. Her family is the most important.

  • @rmstudio grandma didn't have the sense to tell them to make a life for themselves though.

  • This "part of the world" is so very minute.

  • Is that for real? Babies at 12? That is abuse. Pardon my ignorace but I am from Oz so I dont know much about this part of the world. Fascinating though. Did they get married in the end?

  • You should watch all 10 clips. No they didnt get married. Those people may have appeared different to an ozzie, but in the hills of Kentucky, West Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, virginia, and Georgia they are quite typical.

  • Watched it all, was very interesting. I know they are typical but what I was surprised by was her comment that she knows people who had babies at 12 or 13 years old. That was a shock, not this couple. xo

  • No it's only typical in the south. People in the northern appalachia are more modern and more sophisticated. However, this is typical behavior for the south.

  • you forgot about south carolina,, they bad up in the hills of the upstate

  • there stright hillbillies

  • having babies at that age...many decades ago was a normal thing...and that was not seeing as abuse. i personally dont see it as abuse.
