Dumb as it is, I just about died doing the same thing in a local lake - I flopped before I got a breath, and started panicking and trying to get a breath (completely forgetting to pull my spray suit). I kept doing what he was doing, but going further away from shore. I thought I was a goner, but either my buddy or me pulled my spray suit and I wiggled out.

while it may seem like a near death indecent, it would be pretty hard to drown like that. you have about a minutes worth of breath, which in that situation would seem like 10. and by the end, you would be able to just rip yourself out with sheer adrenaline
