@beornborg There are lots of lower cost options for "reality capture": you could certainly work from a point cloud generated by a Kinect, just as you could work with tools such as Photo Scene Editor (you can find it on Autodesk Labs) to generate point clouds (and soon meshes) from sets of photographs.
Can the kinect be turned into a low cost room scanner? The ones sold by Leica are very expensive.
