Does anyone knew the exact location of this crossing? I'll be in Harrisburg in a few weeks and I would love to sit there and watch the trains. I know it's in Richland.
Defect detectors run on the same frequency as the railroad, so every time the end of a train passes over one a report announces to let the crew know of a defect or not.
Hot boxes, dragging equipment, high cars, are an example of few. Hot boxes are wheels or axle bearings which fail and become dangerously hot. Dragging equipment are brakes or anything else dragging, high cars on certain lines cannot fit into some tunnels. The detectors warn crews of these things.

I have a scanner so I listen for them when they come, and I have a list of all the train symbols through here.

It comes through on my scanner on frequency 160.86000, as well as the train communications and dispatcher.

Try Radio Shack. They have a variety of scanners. They cost like $100 though.
