South of the Border actually was established as a beer station due to the "dry" county just north of the SC/NC border. It was the only place to get alcohol for miles. South of the Border didn't start out as a "Mexican" themed tourist trap. That came later. Out of season it is pretty sad, but it is on the way to Myrtle Beach so in the summer it is quite touristy.
