i agree with most things said here...THE SWEET IN THIS CLIP DEFINATELY SHOW THEM AS TRUE POWER GODFATHERS OF ROCK..MANY BANDS WERE INFLUENCED HEAVILY BY THE SWEET(iRON MAIDON..MOTLEY CRUE,LED ZEP,THE RAMONES,WARRANT,WHITESNAKE. ETC).., AND REALLY THE SWEET WERE THE SUPERGROUP..
@alexhateful THEY COULD BLOW AWAY ANY OTHER LIVE PERFORMING ACT IN THEIR DAY..AND HELLRAISER CLIP HAS SO MUCH FUCKING GRUNT POWER -HEAVY METAL..AND STAGE PRESCENCE OF BRIAN CONNELLY IS "KING|"...MANY NEW BAND HAVE ALOT OF WORK AND YEARS TO PROVE THEMSELVES ANYWHERE NEAR AS GOOD AS THE SWEET
As much as I love Sweet the bands that came out at that time were all so good Queen 10cc Bowe Tull elo I coulld go on.sweet had glam prog and pop and a great look but they badfingered themselves To death but they could play like mad
@MrJohnnyDistortion if I may be so bold,I saw LZ in 75 and I saw sweet the same year and as a live act sweet were better. Now as a studio band LZ R art gods hands down sweet were not. There is no contest LZ R history sweet mind U were the very best of glam and they stand on there own
I want the dvd or vhs of this whole amazing concert. I can't explain in words how good they were-not many bands reached this height. Does anyone know how I can get the whole concert?
they rocked HARD because all the other 'rock star cunts' were jacking heroin and being 'bluesy' whereas Sweet were probably on cigarettes, alcohol & adrenalin... and .... sweets? :)
The only Glam rock band i think is ,i'll not said better.Than Sweetbut neck to neck..,its Slade....For just one detail...a force of nature called Noddy Holder, their singer steals every show ..its to impressive you cant believe he sings like that..is too agressive.one band never matched.simple songs..but some became heavy cause of the insane potent raspy and extremely high piched vocals.and i guess Noddy used drugs sometimes...but didt affected his singing, guess a little coke
I love this band I saw them way back in 77 or was it 78.they were great.Action was the LP it the time. They were glam and prog at the same time.Steave Was just in my city last month he was playing as the sweet but no Andy I still went he was cool and still a bit out there
I'm 48 now....but did a live ( not realy) show wiith a few friends when we were 10 years old....the guy that playbacked the drum i still hang out with..... the sweet forever!!!!!1 I mis brian and mick
This was my favorite band for a very long time. I remember sometime in the early 80s I bought one of their live albums and heard a number of songs that must not have been released in the US. The album was awesome and one of the best live albums. When you listed to this song and watch this video and then think about the music scene at the time it is really amazing. Most of the other bands sounded like shit live back then. Actually most still do.
@demonhoopa thank u. u said exactly what i was just going to say. it's not THAT far off though. mick tucker may have been AS good as Bonham. (listen to his drum solo in the right column [live in london 1973]) andy turner is a wizard in his own right, but page is a freakin God. and plant has to be considered the better singer with better range. fun to think about though
I was at this concert with my sister. We were in the front row! I can't believe this clip is here, this is brilliant. I was 12 years old and managed to get Mick Tucker's drumstick, and we also 'stole' decorations off the Christmas tree which was to the right of the stage. They've gone missing over the years unfortunately. Still makes my heart flutter like it did all those years ago. Love this!
Can anybody tell me why this is the only song that appeared on video from that concert?
As far as i know, Hellraiser was the opener of that show at the Rainbow. The set contained great "b sides" like "Burning / someone else will" & "Done me wrong alright".
my singing voice hits between steve's and brian's, they are the other band whose voices my range falls smoothly into next to cindy and kate's voices in the original b52's
The boys at full flight. Fuck it, they were as heavy as any band of the day and this song is more rocking that what passes for most top 20 rock these days.
Heard this on a pub CD player t'other night and had to dig it up..... it's a cracker.... watch out for FREE BEER posting a cover on YouTube in the near future.
This is pure rock at it's best no computers no BS just great musicians who were completely unique in their style and their talent so under rated I am almost 50 and kind of remember them when I was a kid but seeing this now and learning more about them just shows me how incredible the talent was in those days and how they set a bar for other groups like Queen and others. Their vocals are unmatched!
the sweet were my favourite in my early teens. the first single i ever owned was fox on the run. the first album i ever bought with my own dough was strung up. has anybody noticed that motley crue ripped off andy scotts riff in this song for kickstart my heart
sorry, but during the 70s, with keith moon still intact and blowing the house with entwistle together on lead rythm section style, and townshend windmilling himself to oblivion there was no match, but great live band nonetheless.
if brian never got a kickin all those years ago, a few days before pete townsend asked them to back up THE WHO, i have no doubt in my mind that KISS would never have happened. this is total perfection as far as tight musicians go....
probably better watching the live stuff , but really sick i never seen them.
@postmortem23 Okay for those of us who were actually around at the time the Sweet were a band. They were not Gay. Not then and no surviving members are gay.
Because there were better bands. The Ziggy Stardust outfits didn't help much. David Bowie did that so sell his androgynous act. So, it was natural to assume they were queer, just like lots of people did with Bowie.
i was just thinking the same thing, it'd be great if a dvd was released with their concert footage. if anyone knows of this please let us all know. thanx
And I believe Sweet is more talented than Led Zeppelin. I own more than one Led Zeppelin album. Zeppelin was one of the first I bought. Never bought any Sweet until lately. My loss.
@cindysk8er Sweet is my favorite band of the 70's. While I may ENJOY their music more than Led Zep, I could never actually say they're more talented (except in the area of group vocal harmony obviously).
Zeppelin is a band we've all come to take for granted but they were an effing monster.
@beroth77 cindyskk8er made statements that Sweet was more talented than LZ & they were more talented vocally.I agree with the 2nd statement.JPJ & Page were revered before they formed LZ.I'm not trying to diminish Sweet at all & I love both groups.I'm aware of key/tempo changes, open tunings and all that so you know that I play the guitar seriously.I simply dissagreed with the 1st statement because it simply isn't true.Is MT more talented than JHB?Scott vs Page?Clearly not.
@beroth77 IMHO,It is clear that Paige has more knowledge and creativity. They didn't copy those old blues tunes, they transformed them. You can call it copy if you like.I'll accept that.Overall,LZ really had it on talent by a wide margin over Sweet.I don't know how you can't hear it.Please don't take it personal, isn't worth it.And I'm not trying to diminish Sweet.I love what they've contributed and offered in their own unique way. They are special to me as many other groups are.
@MrJohnnyDistortion Of course i'm not taking it personnaly,we are just talking about two great bands ...each one has a diferent taste in this case.Yes i agree,Led Zeppelin didnt needed to pass by such embaressing plagiarism legal acusations.LOosing a lot of cases.Cause they definetely had their own stile...almost making a composition over the covers...the problem was they claim they wrote the songs from other people, thats unecessary and dumb.
@beroth77 The plagiarism is 1 matter, and 1 that is wrong on every level. This discussion between us was based on talent between Sweet & LZ by another poster claiming Sweet was more talented and you brought other points into the discussion.Lets stay with talent as a group or individual basis. My opinion is that LZ is more talented and skilled on every level except vocals than Sweet. This is easy to hear.If you/others dissagree then that's ok.Can we leave it at that or is there more to discuss?
@MrJohnnyDistortion I like very much some zepp's songs mostly the ballads...don't know why.But I was very disapointed with them after see they live performances...is one worst than the other...what happened ?I Praise a lot the live performances to really respect a band or a singer.Plant is a shame 99% of live gigs i saw, paige is almost always hammered doesnt even know what hes doing it seems. But in studio they really did masterpieces.WelSweet just influenced Queen a lot.enought?
Bonhan has a unique way to play for shure...he make the drums sound very heavy without making effort. But these tempo and fast changing of rithym we talked about in Sweet makes me like Mick Tucker better than Bonhan...the both bass players are.avarage i think... directions and stile.I believe you take guitar very seriously...so do I and i do to with singing. We know the best were Mcclaughlin,Alvin Lee,Jose feliciano,al di meola...to name some of the same era.Rock players rarely are much skilled
yes motley crue ripped this riff off on there song kick start my start.also motley crue's toast of the town sounds alot like fox on the run.piece of your action song by motley crue gee i wonder where they got the idea for that song.i like motley crue but i think they should send a big residual check and ty to the band the sweet they owe them at least that.
Ummm no! It's not a direct rip off by any means. It's partially the same riff as Kickstart, but yet altered. Same goes for Fox and Toast. There are literally millions of songs that have similar riffs to one another. You can not win a lawsuit based on a partial riff, which is obviously why Motley has never been sued over this. Anyway, The Sweet and Motley I'd say are entirely even with all the free advertising Mr.Sixx has given The Sweet to younger generations.
For a great example of many songs having partially the same riffs, go listen to Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love. It also has partially the same riff as both Kicksart and Hellraiser. There are only so many strings and so many frets on a guitar. Get a brain before you speak. As Robert Plant once said, "There is nothing new under the sun.". Big residual check, lol. What the f--- are you on?
Do you realise you guys that they were playing this LIVE? Pure Anthem full of strenght, madness, solos, irony, pleasure + technicaly and musically speaking, it's breathtaking. We had here 4 very talented musicians with a very distinctive sound. It's 73 and the mics, the amps were perfect in studio but so so in concert. To me, they deserve the same recognition as the like as Queen, T.Rex, Led Zep (don't smile and listen to their "Fanny Adams"Lp)... Can't believe they remain ignored.
Not only in France, they remain ignored (partially) in the US and in europe (exept in Germany). The Hall of fame is filled with shitty bands, and sadly the name Sweet does not appear anywhere.

Can you tell if Mick was living in Dunstable at the time of his death. I ask cos that's where I was born and brought up.Also if he was living there, can anyone tell me what road? I know it's a long shot but I'm very interested to learn more on this,Thanks Andy.
What member died in Dunstable?Mick? I was born and brought up in Dunstable and never knew this fact? Was he living there at the time? I'd be very interested to learn in what road if he was. Very sad though.
Finally the live video from the "Strung Up" LP--been waiting to see this a LONG time. These guys were as ass-kicking live as any rock band back in the day--raw, tight and powerful--vocally live stronger than even Queen, and Mick was a rock monster on the kit--MANY bands owe a LOT to these guys--Poison and Motley Crue were weak glam rip-offs by comparison. They did a lot of great stuff that never made it to radio("Give Us a Wink", "Off the Record")--killin' stuff...R.I.P. Brian and Mick
My first single and you're correct on all counts. I saw him not long before his death in Dunstable of all places and was moved to tears at what he'd become. I reckon RR is also a superb album as you can tell from my username
@naoaceitanenhumnome The ambiguity the androgynous approach. Shock tactics. The humor you can hear come through in the music. The showmanship. Guitar driven with a strong back beat. The forerunner of punk.
There might have been acts that weren't real bands. Bands like Mud, Slade, Middle of The Road or Shocking Blue and even Bay City Rollers really played their instruments. E.g members of Sweet paid their dues long before success.
Studies show 80% of kids have been listening to rap, fake rock, or pop. If you are one of those 20% who still knows what music is copy and paste to 1 video

holy shit do these guys rock! that middle part is off the frickin chart! and then there are the top 40 hits, how good can it get? THE SWEET! from England, pure genius
God i loved this band when I was a kid and 30 years on I see why. Like you say the middle bit (1.45) is just a stunning bit of rock that todays bands can only but imitate.
Steve Priest was way ahead of his time deploying the use of "sprechgesang", or sprechstimme, during those call and response verses with Brian. I can tell where Fred Schneider from the B-52's got his inspiration from....LOL!!!! "Love Shack baby yeah.....!!!"

MrJohnnyDistortion 5 months ago
@MrJohnnyDistortion I like very much some zepp's songs mostly the ballads...don't know why.But I was very disapointed with them after see they live performances...is one worst than the other...what happened ?I Praise a lot the live performances to really respect a band or a singer.Plant is a shame 99% of live gigs i saw, paige is almost always hammered doesnt even know what hes doing it seems. But in studio they really did masterpieces.WelSweet just influenced Queen a lot.enought?
beroth77 5 months ago
Bonhan has a unique way to play for shure...he make the drums sound very heavy without making effort. But these tempo and fast changing of rithym we talked about in Sweet makes me like Mick Tucker better than Bonhan...the both bass players are.avarage i think... directions and stile.I believe you take guitar very seriously...so do I and i do to with singing. We know the best were Mcclaughlin,Alvin Lee,Jose feliciano,al di meola...to name some of the same era.Rock players rarely are much skilled

I saw UFO and Ted Nugent in the 70's but this is probably the best Live hard rock I've ever heard -- pounding, raw sound at its best. Outstanding!!

yes motley crue ripped this riff off on there song kick start my start.also motley crue's toast of the town sounds alot like fox on the run.piece of your action song by motley crue gee i wonder where they got the idea for that song.i like motley crue but i think they should send a big residual check and ty to the band the sweet they owe them at least that.
bones4477 2 years ago
TimeFearsThePyramids 2 years ago 2
For a great example of many songs having partially the same riffs, go listen to Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love. It also has partially the same riff as both Kicksart and Hellraiser. There are only so many strings and so many frets on a guitar. Get a brain before you speak. As Robert Plant once said, "There is nothing new under the sun.". Big residual check, lol. What the f--- are you on?

Nikki Sixx was majorly influenced by The Sweet ... anyone else notice this sounds like kick start my heart?? anyway The sweet RULE! ♥♥

Can't believe they remain ignored.
gillfrancois 2 years ago 2
@gillfrancois
yeah but they didn't write this material so it wasn't authentic
spamjelly5 2 years ago
@spamjelly
Well they played those songs with panache and composed some very valuable material later.
@dubarri63
Not only in France, they remain ignored (partially) in the US and in europe (exept in Germany). The Hall of fame is filled with shitty bands, and sadly the name Sweet does not appear anywhere.
gillfrancois 2 years ago
its the hell of authentic ethics hehe: the sweet they were casted then
and all of the early chinn-champman material fits them
like a glove or another vibrator up theirs ;-))
remindbender 2 years ago
well, they only remain ignored in France and Nobody knows them in here!
Anyway it's a very underrated band!!!

Barca991x3 2 years ago

I reckon RR is also a superb album as you can tell from my username
stargazer1977 2 years ago
Did Brian Connally die of a drug overdose?
RockerAustin 2 years ago
No, he died of kidney failure, pretty much the complications brought on by excessive drinking... Sad.
Sweet were never a drug band. They were rather a heavy drinking band...

@celinebritgirl what defines glam rock? despite the clothes?
naoaceitanenhumnome 1 year ago
@naoaceitanenhumnome The ambiguity the androgynous approach. Shock tactics. The humor you can hear come through in the music. The showmanship. Guitar driven with a strong back beat. The forerunner of punk.
celinebritgirl 1 year ago
@celinebritgirl I can hear a little bit of punk in songs like Little Willy, hehe.

WHAT SURPRISE.
This song is the first track of the album (LP) "Live in England" (released only in or for Italy by EMI).
Is the first Album of Sweet that I have bought!!!! GREAT ALBUM!!!!
Now I can see what I have heard so much!!
Thank for post

There might have been acts that weren't real bands. Bands like Mud, Slade, Middle of The Road or Shocking Blue and even Bay City Rollers really played their instruments. E.g members of Sweet paid their dues long before success.

Incredible drumming, he seems on a par with Ian Paice here IMO.

Mick was an amazing drummer indeed. Very disctinctive. And closer in style to Paice rather than Bonzo for example, you're right about that one...
