I am not proud of the British Empire but am in no way shape or form responsible for it so do not deserve to be punished for it, as I've already said only a very small proportion of the population were responsible for it.

On the other hand I am proud of my country's great scientific and cultural achievments and the great bravery shown by my ancestors in defending their country for future generations, even though I wasn't responsible for these things either.

You see, AreYouExperiencedJH, there is no hypocrisy involved -pride and responsibility are simply not the same thing; it is totally acceptable to be proud of something one is not responsible for,(and BEING PROUD DOES NOT MAKE ONE RESPONSIBLE!) therfore being proud of a nation and much of it's history does not necessitate one being responsible (and therefore punishable) for the regrettable aspects of that nations history.
