Me Being a Mets fan, I wanted to hate on Howard, and i really thought all of his homeruns were hit in that homerun friendly ballpark in Philly... however, the year he hit 58 homeruns, he hit 29 on the road and 29 at home... he is officially a beast!!! He is top 3 in the game as far as Power is concerned... And someone wrote that 5 months ago they would've traded him for the combo of Hughes/kennedy.. Are u sure u would still make that trade?.. lol..
Hughes/Kennedy........NOT even close! Avg 40+ Hr's a year with 135+ Rbi's can't be replaced. A strike out is an AB.....just like a fly-ball or a ground-out. Hr's are a game-changer most times and I'll take that every time! Look what changed every post-season game for us so far!
Unfortunately, the coward Marlins refused to pitch to him (even with no one on base) or he would have gotten to 60 easily. The excuse that "he's in scoring position the moment he steps up to the plate" is rubbish and antithetical to the spirit of the game.
Amen to that comment centercounter...to hit 58 homers is 1 thing...to hit 58 homers when noone is trying to pitch to you at all is another. He was right up there with Pujols & Bonds for intentional walks that season. If teams weren't as scared of him he could've possibly went for 65 or dare I say-even 70...Truth is,when you look at all the best "power-hitters" in the game-(Pujols,A-Rod/Soriano/Fielder/Guererro/etc.) Strikeouts & all,Ryan Howard has the most pure-power in the game...Period....
Now that Jayson Werth is hitting in hie prime, I would say that Howard has Competition for the most raw power. The thing that gives Howard the edge is His tremendous power to the Opposite field.
I had wondered if a performance-based deal could have been struck where he would get bonuses based on reducing his strikeout ratio. He may have a lot of RBIs, but he strands a lot of runners by simply not even putting the ball in play, which might at least advance them.
Well, For Ryan Howard and the kind of production he brings, especially that he's an excellent clutch player, you really don't need to worry bout Strikeout rates with him.
he gets all his power from his back foot and his weight...watch his swing..he loads his power into his back foot and then shifts his weight as he swings, and that gives him all his power. MVP. Go phils
i was at the game. the rally towels through off so much lint you could see it floating in the lights.

I like Howard a lot, but he's never come close to putting up the numbers he put up in '06. Safe to say that season was an anomaly.

True, but as it stands, he has 590 RBI on 696 Hits. That means that 84% of the time, a hit has resulted in an RBI. That's a fucking phenomenal ratio.

I'm a diehard Phillies fan, and I still say A-Rod is better, hands down. I'd trade Howard for a Hughes/Kennedy combo any day.
