i would say its the pathetic lack of originality that is destorying music nowadays to be honest. bands all sound the same and if a really good original band comes out (evanescence) you get cheap rip-offs (we are the fallen). to be honest i would rather smithson stay a pop singer even though i hate this kind of music because then she at least isnt completely ripping someones style. she sounds way more distinct here.

because this album only sold 300 copies and only $100,000 was spent on promotion by her record label despite the $2 million promotion reports the rest of that money went to paying for other artists on that label, and because the label was being merged she and a lot of unreleased artists were dropped and not paid.

I like the speculation about Carly pre idol and post idol. Very good points made. Same as David Cook-I predict, just based on all the attention post idol this last week and the huge number of votes that he might be the biggest idol so far and guess what? If he's had an album released at age 18-21, doubt seriously it would have been a hit. He's VERY TALENTED but the machine called American Idol is STUNNING in it's power to put someone out there. David's a gem-can't wait to see how it goes.

I actually would agree with you rachelnasution if Carly's CD gave her a competitive advantage, such a large fan base from a hit song, or something along those lines.

I honestly don't see that producing an album under the aegis of a major label, as opposed to an indie album, gives an advantage that tips the balance in any meaningful way on a TV reality show.

Conversely, someone like Archuleta who won a nationally televised talent show like Star Search has a tremendous built in fan base.

Half the Top 24 this year on American Idol have produced CD's and quite a few of them under deal from major labels. Carly Smithson became the poster child for Idol's "year of the ringer" as the blogs have dubbed it. She is a very talented singer.

But not with major label, cbotten... its ok if you produced Indy CD. You would not sing there in that stage just with experience singing in the bath tub... indeed... I would agree... Carly has incredible voice... but she should give a chane to so many millions who never even have record deal. MCA is one of major label. And YET, she should disclose it from the very beginning...
