Democracy by itself would devolve into oligarchy. A Republic by itself would never be able to change laws. If the world were Republic since 1 A.D. we would still be stoning children for disobeying their parents. The law says so!

The truth is that Democracy by itself is--as Plato said--people doing whatever they want. A Republic by itself is frozen still--the laws are set in stone. But a Democratic Republic is a system by which the law can change--only very slowly and only by enough people.
