after her dress is ripped off, you would think she would run off the stage to cover herself.
The camera does changed position before the final scene and the woman in question could be
a stand in and also someone might cover her with something before the final few seconds, just before Spanky moves the prop in front of her. The camera shows her from the shoulder up and nothing below.
I'll be she got alot of dates after this performance. She looks cute has a dog with a hat on. This could be a new Broadway show, a boy recites Shakespeare and his mother's dress gets ripped off and becomes a laughing stock. I distinctly remember the ending of this episode when I was younger. The humor aspect is obvious. But on another level, the sexual overtones (getting her dress ripped off in public, freezing with embarrassment in front of everyone, and the subliminal sexual message of the prop placed in front of her) is brilliant.
This episode is all about subliminal sex. I'm amazed that with all the people looking at Disney and popular commericials for subliminal sexual messages, more study hasn't gone into this episode. OK I feel compelled to tell all you broads why I jerk off to this episode. When I was a kid 9 or so this was my first dirty movie. A women getting her dress torn off in public and then looking like a dog whom I've seen fornicating in he streets before let my imagination go wild. Plus the humiliation factor add in if you look hard at her breasts you actually see nipples. A similar thing happened to me. I was dressed as a cavalry officer for a stage production.

@dittwest I believe the film was made for the viewer to enjoy the comical stage performance of Spanky as the gang gives him the works royally and also the viewer should enjoy the frantic effort of Spanky's mother trying to get him off that stage.The strange twist that happens to Spanky's mom that brings her into the act should be very pleasing to the viewer as well.It is odd that the film is made for people to enjoy others suffering and being humiliated for comical porposes.

I was just discussing this episode with a coworker and we were trying to figurue out which is worse for Spanky's mother a). loosing her dress on stage b).feezing on stage in her slip or c). having that crazy stage prop wheeled in front of her.
Could you imagine How did the actress that played Spanky's mother ever agree to do this short? I know it was the depression and money was hard to come by but you have to be kidding! What if she had a family what did they think? @143AC Stan Laurel was certainly a genius indeed if he was the one that came up with the ending of "Beginner's Luck",Spanky's mother trying to rescue her son from the brutal audience and her own mother hooks her dress and hikes it up and off then as she freezes on stage kneeling as the crowd roars with laughter at her expense her son puts the stage prop in front of her for the completing of her humiliation!!!
I had studied this short in a post grad course many many yrs back.I was always a huge fan of it especially the ending and was glad that a course came up to study the Our Gang and the Laurel & Hardy shorts.Just my luck 5 Our Gang and 5 L&H in the Gang group I was thrilled to see this one was going to be one that was to be studied.
@143AC Dear 143AC Stan was the idea man behind many ideas at the Roach Studios.So some Laurel and Hardy shorts and some Thelma Todd shorts had the same sight gag.If you get a chance to see them do you'll enjoy it and understand the ending of this short better.
just a point of information on this short-the ending was never to be the way it came out .It was changed by Stan laurel of Laurel and Hardy fame .He loved to use this technique and asked Roach to change the ending.Blonde women loosing their dresses and then being knocked dizzy or freezing with shock and having a false body placed infront of them.The original prop was to be a oestreich but Spank grabbed the wrong one and they kept it as Spanky's mother with a lioness body as she bays at the moon!
@143AC I say that she wasn't that big of a trouble maker at all.Somewhat pushy ,misguided for sure but the MC is much worse .He almost slaps her when she asks for lights ,manhandles her when she's looking for Spanky near the stage.Won't take him off as the audience loves him and he's thinking of the dollar!Manhandles her when she tries to run on stage and forces her to take her position of doom and gives granny permission to hike the back curtain which will show the mother trying to reel him in.

A somewhat predictable short knowing the history of the our gang comidies.The actress playing the mother is one of the better looking one's to play Spanky's mother .Once she fails to tell the boys of Spank's change of heart and Spanky tells the little girl "The dress is in the bag" you know what's going to happen.Spanky's mother is going to try to save him and the gang will wind up cooking her goose and giving her the works .Not sure why granny is laughing after she just stripped her daughter?

I have been traumatized by this ending since I was a little kid. Now I'm 52 and it still gives me the willies! The embarrasment and the shame. The Mom might have been too aggresive, but this still give me goosebumps.

As I recall earlier in this episode Spanky puts the gang up to sabotage his act because his snobby mother wants him to be a highfalutten serious actor - the ultimate stage mom. Then Spanky meets a girl that is really needy so he then wants to win the prize to help this needy girl but it is too late to call off the gang - ironically - Spanky wins for comedy and to the chagrin of his snooty mom.

I agree that it is a bit disturbing and sadistic. I know it's comedy but that audience is real cruel and for the emcee to give the OK for Spanky's grandmother to rip off her daughter's dress, that is just cruel. Perhaps if Spanky's mother was mean and abusive, like the mother in a previous Little Rascals episode who got her butt literally kicked by Wheezer's aunt, the finale would have been more funnier to me. I always felt bad for Spanky's mom.

A similar thing happened to me. I was dressed as a cavalry officer for a stage production.
Evidently, some of the stage hands disliked my performance so much that they used one of the stage hooks. After they had pulled me off my feet, I felt the hook going down the back of my boot, and I was dragged, kicking and struggling off stage.
To further add to the fun, once they had me, they tickled me.
The rehearsal audience thought that it was hilarious! :P

@dittwest I believe the film was made for the viewer to enjoy the comical stage performance of Spanky as the gang gives him the works royally and also the viewer should enjoy the frantic effort of Spanky's mother trying to get him off that stage.The strange twist that happens to Spanky's mom that brings her into the act should be very pleasing to the viewer as well.It is odd that the film is made for people to enjoy others suffering and being humiliated for comical porposes.

Could you imagine How did the actress that played Spanky's mother ever agree to do this short? I know it was the depression and money was hard to come by but you have to be kidding! What if she had a family what did they think? I know she was in her early 30's and may have had young children did she tell them not to go to the movies but their freinds would have seen it and laughed their asses off at her loosing her dress and then getting behind that dog prop?Talk about total humiliation!!!!!!

just a point of information on this short-the ending was never to be the way it came out .It was changed by Stan laurel of Laurel and Hardy fame .He loved to use this technique and asked Roach to change the ending.Blonde women loosing their dresses and then being knocked dizzy or freezing with shock and having a false body placed infront of them.The original prop was to be a oestreich but Spank grabbed the wrong one and they kept it as Spanky's mother with a lioness body as she bays at the moon!

@143AC As far as today's standards go.In the 1930's young pretty girls had their dresses ripped off them in many films, today it would equate to a nude scene.The actress Kitty Kelly(Spank's mom) was 5-10 yrs older than any of those girls but had to go through the same fate.Seeing her in a slip would have been very sexy in it's day!

A few yrs back I ran a pole on this short.The question which was more embarrassing for Spanky1. what happen here at the theater or 2 his friends and classmates finding out that yrs earlier before she was married that Spanky's mother had posed nude for Playboy and the kids had the copies of her spread.Only one person voted for a playboy spread while over 25 voted for this unveiling at her stage debut at the Ritz theater.I never understand that overwhelming response?

A somewhat predictable short knowing the history of the our gang comidies.The actress playing the mother is one of the better looking one's to play Spanky's mother .Once she fails to tell the boys of Spank's change of heart and Spanky tells the little girl "The dress is in the bag" you know what's going to happen.Spanky's mother is going to try to save him and the gang will wind up cooking her goose and giving her the works .Not sure why granny is laughing after she just stripped her daughter?

@dillsull One thing is certain Grandma knows how savage and cruel the audience is after they gave daisey quite a razzing.Grandma knows what they will do with the appeareance of Spanky's mother appearing from behind the curtain then seeing her scream as she realizes her dress is hiking up.The audience love this unexpected treat and howl with approval as a Stripped Spanky's mother just kneels down infront of them waiting to be crowned with her stage prop for her final and complete humiliation.

I always thought this episode was disturbing and cruel.When Spanky's mother's dress has been ripped off her and Spanky rushes the lion stage prop into place to hide his mother from the audience ,the prop looks like a nude human female that has breasts and it's legs are spread,combine this with the expression on her face and way she is looking up with her mouth open she looks like she is going to give someone a bloe job.

As I recall earlier in this episode Spanky puts the gang up to sabotage his act because his snobby mother wants him to be a highfalutten serious actor - the ultimate stage mom. Then Spanky meets a girl that is really needy so he then wants to win the prize to help this needy girl but it is too late to call off the gang - ironically - Spanky wins for comedy and to the chagrin of his snooty mom.

I agree that it is a bit disturbing and sadistic. I know it's comedy but that audience is real cruel and for the emcee to give the OK for Spanky's grandmother to rip off her daughter's dress, that is just cruel. Perhaps if Spanky's mother was mean and abusive, like the mother in a previous Little Rascals episode who got her butt literally kicked by Wheezer's aunt, the finale would have been more funnier to me. I always felt bad for Spanky's mom.
