  • Caray, lo que hacen 40 anos, Mark Spitz me parecia guapisimos alla a principio de los 70's y ahora que lo vuelvo a ver esta espantoso y muy avejentado!

  • 1:21 nice late start

  • 1972 olympics are by far my favorite olympics

  • big delay and belly flop at 1:20 lol

  • awful technique ....

  • faits d armes

    fait d' a Yne

  • Phelps is the evolution of Spitz.

  • @UP72 He owned the water! But did he own a foreskin?

I never met any succesful swimmer who is jew or arab!

  • was he CIRCUMSISED?

  • i think overall, Spitz is better than Phelps. This guy had a mustache, armpit hair, no full body suit, no cap no goggles

  • Apparentely he had a massive penis

  • @UP72

That's right! When men were men and not little pussies like today, leaving their home with a gym bag and bottled water in hand, cycling to their local aquatics centre wearing 20-odd pounds of protective gear, hogging an entire lane on the roadway and bitching at drivers that honk at them to get the hell out of the way, going for a swim with goggles on, taking three times as long to sauna and shower afterwards and having a puny energy bar at the end of it all. Ughhh...

  • Mustaches are sooo beautiful!!! Why don't men use them nowadays?!?!?

  • @sevlarievlis

    that's what I say!!!!!!

  • best ever

  • um i think marks times are shit but he won a great achievement

  • You have no respect, let me guess, you're a cocky high school swimmer. Dude you are not getting anywhere near top level swimming. Get real before talking about great elite athletes.

  • Why don't you all just admire what this man did back in 1972. Him and Phelps, that's different issues.

  • Spitz

  • imagine if he and phelps were in a duel. 2008 phelps vs. 1972 spitz. phelps is in same suits and stuff he wore in beijing. but spitz shaves off the moustache, puts in a track start, does some dolphin kicks, wheres a cap and some decent goggles. who would win????

  • Actually phelps would beat him very easiliy, this is because since 1972 the swimming techniques have evolved a lot, I'm not saying Spitz would suck, but in his time, Spitz overpassed the expectations, and that's why he's also as great as Phelps is. GO WORLD! :D

  • Man,Phelps is on steroids that's for sure,I am not saying Spitz wasn't but in the end I am sorry to say but it gets to that, training is important but in todays sports steroids are not optional if you want to win something that is :P.

  • "Phelps is on steroids that's for sure", source??? Stop saying shit, douche bag

  • phelps because his technique is so much better

  • apparently his record breaking times back then aren't even enough to qualify for the olypmics nowadays. Phelps will beat him no problem, but he was still a great swimmer for his time

  • Smart of you, make that comparison. He would have taken Phelps if he had the same resources and technology. This dude swam with balls man, not all the shit swimmers have now. Swimming is all about fancy training now.

  • @lander582 Technique with swimming and other skills were refined over the 45 years.. swimmers didn't weight train or practice that extensively/frequently either. Nutrition habits were different with swimmers. People continue along with experience to beat records in swimming. It's like saying Carl Lewis should go against Usain Bolt.

  • look at the start 1:22

man what a progress in swimming techniques up to now...

  • someone belly flopped

  • thats not true many people are pure 50 sprinters

  • Il migliore...

  • Yeah, Mark Spitz...I remember back in 1973....near the end of June in fact, he had his honeymoon in Hawaii, same hotel as my mom and stepdad did. They came back and told me that about him. I thought that was so kewl.

  • Lucky chance !!

  • Mark Spitz had alot of competition. He went to the 68 Olympics and bombed and trained hard and came back and won at the 72 Olympics. Swimming is more specialized now though with some swimmers only concentrating on one race. Both are amazing. Different times.

  • correct... mark spitz was the best sprinter of his time and there was no 50 free at the 72 games... add that event and you could nearly guarintee that he'd have had 8 golds...

that said, phelps had an amazing games and should not be discredited for it...

  • Mark Spitz only got 7 gold medals because there was one less swimming event back then there it is today

  • im not sure thats the case..

  • Maestro... le ganastes a mi pana Jorge Delgado de Guayaquil, Ecuador.. por un pelo..

    Eres un chepo Mark..

te vi en el mundial de natacion de Guayaquil en 1982,Saludos

  • Back then there was no competition so Spitz easily one medals. Michael Phelps is way better

  • God you're so ignorant. And it's "Won medals, not one medals."

  • Compare Spitz with Phelps...

SPITZ: 7 golds in Munich 1972

PHELPS: 8 golds in Beijing 2008

    Amazing!

  • You gotta love the shaggy no-goggles approach.

Fake shark skin pants are nice too.

    Like two different planets.

    Spitz vs. Phelps

    =

    Rocky vs. Draco

  • I 100% agree with "KHallesy", both Phelps and Spitz are heros. They both have made of the most they with what is available to them, different technology, different times and different competitors. BTW, anyone noticed the name HALL,gary appeared on the sign board? We have Gary HALL, Jr who got 2 golds in 50M Freestyle. Is this Gary HALL the father of Gary HALL, Jr? Can't be he same person!

  • Yes mate, he's the father of Gary Hall Jr.

  • When Mark Spitz swam you were not allowed to swim with your head underwater in Breaststroke. Also when you did flip turns in backstroke you could not turn onto your stomach to do them. The list foes on and on but my point is they are both great champions and I do not think Spitz is jealous at all. I think he has been gracious and he is still ahero of mine by being a role model and living like a champion his whole life. That still remains to be seen if Phelps can do the same. I respect both!

  • Swimming was different back when Mark Spitz won his 7 gold medals. There is no question in head to head races Phelps would wipe Spitz out of the pool today. But they are both champions and with the technology available at the time Spitz performed amazing and his times were amazing for 1972. The rules have changed so much too. I was so into swimming my whole life that I cannot believe I did not ever realize you could swim faster underwater than on top. Someday you may see complete races unde

  • Yes he is. He won't admit it though

  • Mark Spitz has always been a hero of mine. I was 10 and lived for swimming when he won the 7 gold medals. He went to the 68 Olympics and did not do well so he must have worked very hard to then come back and when 7 golds. He is an American hero just like Micheal Phelps is now. Both of them have made my life more complete and fulfilled by watching their greatness. No amount of money could buy what they have both accomplished. Marks accomplishments are equal to that of Phelps. Thank You!!!!

  • Obviously you do if you're so emotional about it.

  • "we're sorry, this video is no longer available" I'M GETTING SO SICK OF THIS!!

  • Inane comments here about mustaches and then some bringing Tiger Woods & golf up.

Please simpletons-Spitz and Phelps are legends just appreciate that fact and don't analyze & compare.

  • Went to see mark when he came back from Germany, we were all so proud of him, he came off as such a j..k that

some of kids that were there were crying, but hey I still

love him, and respect what he did. He is still AMAZING!!

  • Mark Spitz is Jewish.

Just thought I'd mention a fact.

  • At the one minute and 20 second mark in the video you will see the start of a new race and one of the swimmers dives in a few seconds too late.

Doesn't he realize 1/100th of a second matters??

    What a putz.

  • gg reaction time.

  • Respect, Faith. Congratulations to Michael Phelps. He made a huge accomplishment.

Yeah, it hurt that he broke Mark Spitz record he held so long, but that's sports. Records are meant to be broken. But I love Mark Spitz athleticism and way he performed in sports.

I just didn't want the commentators to disregard Mark. Whethe or not that they did, I'll leave it up to you. I just hope they still respect Mark and his athletic prowess. Love Mark and his athleticism.

    Respect Faith NP

  • Both Spitz and Phelps are amazing athletes and now the torch has been passed to the next generation of Americans to hopefully carry on the tradition of excellence. Come on people, let's put it in perspective here and stop the bickering of who had it easier or harder. Spitz held that title for over 30 YEARS! It took that long for another athlete to emerge to that level. Spitz set an extremely high bar of standard and Phelps had the tenacity and discipline to exceed it. BOTH ARE AMAZING!

  • You are absolutely right. Both Spitz and Phelps have heart and that's what made both these men great Olympians and able to handle such a grueling schedule. I watched Mark Spitz win in 1972, I was 7 years old and he was a hero to me. I agree with Spitz, he told Phelps that kids everywhere were now going to look at him as a hero but he thought Phelps could handle it ok (I'm paraphrasing Mark's words). After watching the interviews I too think he has the attitude and maturity to handle it.

  • shortest comment

  • Mark Spitz will always be remembered, he won the gold without gimmicks, no special suit, goggles, or any of the other "stuff" to go faster, he simply swam!, and BTW- Spitz was (is) sexy and fine. He should have been at the Olympics.

  • vidann, excellent comment. While you're at it, can you please take a shot at Tiger Woods for using graphite clubs.

  • My dad was an excellent golfer and he loved graphite clubs too, I just couldn't believe he paid that kind of money for them! I think with Tiger as with Spitz and even Phelps you have to have the raw talent to start with, which all of them do.

It's not the clubs that make Tiger great it's his keen knowledge of the game and great ability to push yourself himself to exceed any limitation. I think Tiger would play well with any club he used because he has the fundamental talent to start with.

  • tiger woods doesn't use graphite shafts...

  • What Mark Spitz accomplished in 1972 will stand forever in a special place in history. He did it without the benefit of an aerodynamic swimsuit, and he did it with normal male hair growth on his body. It's like comparing the achievements of baseball heroes today with the Mickey Mantles of yesterday. Just provide state of the art equipment, and give them 8 more games in a season to do it in! You go, Mark!

  • Phelps has to grow a moustache if he really wants to be the greatest, plus get rid of that rubber cap. I guess there is not much he can do about his average looks. Spitz was much sexier. Phelps just looks like the average frat boy....

  • I am from Baltimore and I am SUPER proud of and for Phelps, but I do feel Spitz is getting a serious hose job from the US Olympic Team and NBC... Big baseball fan, so I have loved Costas since childhood, but I feel they are almost shunning what he did in those games in '72?

Both Phelps and Spitz are sports icons for this country. Babe Ruth was never a forgotten footnote once Ted Williams or Joe D came along, and neither should Spitz!

  • didn't anyone wear goggles then?

  • total screw job on spitz... not a good reflection on the olympics or the sport of swimming that they cant honor their past greats... spitz, who looks great for his age, shouldve been there, it wouldve been a nice passing of the torch... congrats to phelps, its just sad spitz wasnt invited to add more importance to the great achievement.

  • All I want to know is who the hell the dude 3rd from top in the last race is. WTF LMAO. That's the competition he faced? He gave everyone a headstart and still was in it for a medal at the end. I think he had a stroke.

  • looks like freddie mercury

  • Phelps is great but he will never equal what Spitz did no matter how many medals he wins or how many records he breaks. Spitz was a Phenom and always will be.

  • Spitz is better looking than Phelps; plus, Spitz raced without a race cap and lots of hair!!

  • Is that true that Spitz almost qualify to Atlanta 96?

  • Phelps has been awesome in this year's olympics but he still wasn't able to do what Spitz did in '72. What you don't hear talked about on NBC is that Spitz actually broke the world record in each of the events which he won gold. Phelps hasn't been able to do that. Regardless, I'm glad to see Phelps tie and probably break the medal record.

  • Why do you say this. Phelps has won Goldmedal No. 7 and the games are still running, so he can win his 8. Medal!!!

  • he is going to break it. he's too amazing.

  • You are an idiot. Phelps has won 8 golds. 7 of those golds were world records. The other gold was an Olympic record.

  • They are both great champions. I am disappointed in Phelps lack of admiration and respect for Mark Spitz. without Spitz incredible accomplishments, Phelps would not have had his lofty goal to shoot for!

  • guess you didnt see the interview with both of them on nbc...phelps seems to be a very humble kid

  • what r u talking about

  • are you kidding??? he couldnt even speak during the interview thats how humbled and respectful he was. watch the interview on NBC's website.

  • no cap no goggles full hair 1972 training techniques and methods.

If Spitz were Phelps age today they would be rivals and would probably split in some fashion.

Spitz had the same drive to train as does Phelps now. It would be interesting to see how they would stack up.

  • Costas just said on NBC that spitz had the stache, no cap, and a regular swimsuit.. i think that Spitz in his prime vs. Phelps in his prime, Spitz could hold his ground and even possibly win..

  • Phelps isnt in his prime yet..... hes only been on wheights for a few years, and has a lot more world records to break. His biological makeup is out of this world.

also, caps and staches dont matter in sprints. 50 or 100 meters. look up The Russian Rocket... he still has the WR for the 50 free - 21.64 sec.

  • Yes, caps and facial hair do matter.. the fact that "the Russian Rocket" still has a world record isn't relevant to the fact that facial hair and covering up the hair on the head matters..

  • That stashe cant be very aerodynamic probably why he just got beat by michael phelps who is a beast!

  • i totally agree with you there mate. people lack understanding

  • spita wouldn't stand a chance against phelps' endurance... phelps would anihilate spitz even in spitz' prime so quit arguing over something you oviously don't know for those who are on spitz' side... phelps is a master of the water he will go down in history and they will always bring him up in every olypics for next 5 lifetimes and thereafter...

  • I can't help but think if Mark Spitz wore a cap and shaved his mustashe to vut down on drag and worn goggles that Phelps might not be breaking his records. I'm not saying this is a fact, after all Phelps is something fucking amazing, but it would have been interesting to see them compete against one another at both of the peaks.

  • Seriously, I'm so SICK and TIRED of people claiming that if Spitz would have shaved, worn goggles and had a current Speedo that he would have owned Phelps. Phelps is stronger, has superior training, diet, etc. Plus he is CRUSHING Spitz's times!!! Spitz is great, but swimming (just as all sports) have advanced physically, not just technologically.

  • He swam with a fucking mustache. That's unheard of.

  • All I know is that it's always fun to try and project what would happen in a race between the two--all training methods and gear being equal.

  • if spitz in his prime shaved his head, body, and facial hair and wore speedos and goggles he would own phelps

  • Dude, you put Michael Phelps in an Aussie square legger and he'd be killing these times. A 200 fly in 2:00.7 from 1972 would translate to something on the order of a 1:56.8 to 1:57.5 given the deep, baffled pool in Beijing and a LZR in 2008. Mr Phelps went 1:53.03 yesterday. Four seconds, give or take, is what, six, maybe seven meters? That leaves a lot to training and perfecting stroke work.

  • Michael Phelps owns Mark Spitz. PERIOD.

  • It's easy with the new techniques and faster swimsuits of today. But back then, hell no.

  • People say Phelps is faster than Spitz because of drugs, (possible but unproven), but an even bigger advantage for Phelps is the advances in stroke technique. Spitz's form would be considered to be horrible today, but with today's video analysis and stroke refinement, its safe to say that Spitz would probably be Phelps' equal because of his physical prowess. Kudos to Spitz for his pre-technology excellence.

  • Phelps may be the all time metal holder, but imagine Spitz with the special speedo bodysuit and wonder how much faster could he have gone. And though the height difference is only 3 inches, Phelps has a huge advantage in arm span (along with size 14 feet). Even biochemically, Phleps can recover quicker from 'lactic acid burn' in his muscles; perhaps Spitz could, but I doubt it ;)! Spitz will always be my champion, but kudos to Phelps for finally winning GOLD - what he was litteraly BORN TO DO

  • Spitz is my man. Handsome, brash, irreverent, smart, funny. I had The Poster on my bedroom wall for years. I say with his leg hair, thick head of hair, mustache, speedo, and panache he is the greatest swimmer of all time. They used to talk about how his legs bent back at the knee.

  • Just imagine if Spitz didn't swim with that mustache...he would break every record imaginable. But really just like Nicklaus vs. Tiger, Phelps is assisted by Modern technology. Phelps is no doubt amazing, but Spitz was the most dominant athlete of the time.

  • Im sorry to say this, but no phelps is the man.

  • old school great

  • Mark Spitz is the best!! He was also one of the most handsome swimmers of all time!

  • I didn't know Freddie Mercury liked to swim

  • Famous Jews: GOD, Jesus Christ, Elvis & Mark Spitz!

  • incase you didnt notice but mark spitz was swimming in a speedo, no googles and no cap, with long hair...times have changed

  • even if mark spitz and phelps raced when they were in there prime phelps would win

  • This is because things move on! Diet, equipment, training techniques, technology, medicine for injury.

In 30 years swimmers will be even faster.

If spitz was in his prime today he would be at these olympics mixing it with the best.

  • Absolute spoken out of ignorance. The young generation has lost respect for those who designed everything they do today.

  • that is exactly what your parents generation said about you, and what the 'young' generation will say about their children.

  • Mark Spitz is the best micheal phelps will never beat him(although i am a big fan of micheal)cause they now have high tech swimwear but 36 years ago do they hav tis????

  • dude omg phelps is much better and its no just the suit even tho the lazer is awesome phelps will always be the best unless some one comes

  • No high tech googles and swimsuit, just pure athletic skills. Michael Phelps rely on his space age swim wear to achieve his goals, in essence he only wins half the glory. That is why Mark Spitz will always be the best American swimmer and throughout the world.

  • im going to wear an american flag speedo to all of my competitions in honor of Mark Spitz, who almost became James Bond

  • only american, that could be loved

  • Grande Mark Spitz( e, tra l'altro, quanti ricordi...).Bella l'idea di proporre questo video

  • Mark Spitz is phenomenal! bu.. so is Michael Phelps!!

  • Charm and simplicity of Mark Spitz are unique!
