@panzerlion Kenshiro is very definitely a huge asshole, but so are all of the guys he kills in gruesome ways, so the audience only feels mildly sympathetic for them. Also the bad guys (especially the incapable ones) tend to be absurdly overconfident, and thus too dumb to live.

I have always maintained to my friends that, regardless of how the makers intended it, Hokuto no Ken is most enjoyable as a comedy. The recent OVA tried to move away from this, but Fist of the Blue Sky embraced it.

When Kenshiro was younger, Shuu exchanged his eyes for Kenshiro's life.

Kenshiro did some sort of training when he was very young at Souther's palace.He had to fight 10 Nanto masters.Although they were bigger and more experienced then little Kenshiro, he defeated 9 of them.Shuu loved his technique and decided that his 10th opponent will be him. So they've fought and Kenshiro lost and according to the"Nanto 10 men fight law" if a Hokuto master was to lose on Nanto ground, he must be killed.But Shuu (the Star of Benevolence) offered his eyes in exchange for his life.

Shu's style Nanto Hakuro Ken, and Rei's Nanto Suichoken are both forms of Nanto Sei Ken, a martial that usually involves slicing and stabbing opponents with bare hands/feet.

So they both do basically the same thing(stabbing/slicing), but do it slightly different ways(Nanto Suichoken is very graceful and works well in the air, Nanto Hakuro Ken mostly uses the feet).

Nanto suicho ken depends on feet too,remember when Yuda flooded the city to stop Rei's movements.Within Nanto seiken most of them use a lot of foot work.Shin also used nanto Goksatsu to cut Ken's veins while they were in the air.Juzza leans a self taught style which is more similar to Hokuto.

Hokuto & Nanto are two opposite martial arts.

Hokuto Shinken - Destroys an opponent from the inside using pressure points.

Nanto Seiken - Destroys an opponent from the outside using stabbing/slicing techniques.

They are supposed to coexist in harmony with one another, but during events of the story several Nanto masters turn their backs on the teachings for their own ambition.

Shuu is actually one of the virtuous Nanto warriors, and fights Kenshiro to gauge his strength and ambition.

Yes they were from two diff schools of matrial arts that are shrouded by diff stars. They are supposed to live in harmony together. For some reason that I forget Ken was having to spar with people from this other school. The loser was supposed to die. Shuu beat Ken easily but choose to go blind by his own hand to please the court rather than taking Ken's life because Shuu knew Ken would be a great defender of the people.

The "Gaiden" series aren't remakes. They are back stories that Buronson and Hara did as "Roah's Story" or Shin's Story" ect... To be honest, these Gaiden are beautifully done, and I WISHED the original anime had waited a few years to have this quality, because in these stories, the beauty of the story FINALLY got a match in animation.

Kenshiro has the ability to learn fighting forms of his former opponents. That's how he learns their weakness to be able to defeat them. The Nantoseiken ability he uses here is from Yuda. Ken watched Rei battle Yuda and figured out how Yuda uses his abilities. You'll see later in the story Ken basically using all the fighting forms he's encountered through out his journey.

I thought it was called Musou Tensei. He is able to use the fighting styles and spirits of the dead that hes deemed as powerful warriors. When shu dies he even says "Shu star of benevolence, enter my heart and live on through me" (or something to that effect)

SuieiShin translates to water reflection spirit after watching a fighter do a special technique this allows the hokuto successor to duplicate it. He picked up the hand wind slicing attack with the fight between rei and yuda. After watching yuda utilize this technique on rei Kenshiro was able to analyze it and incoperate it into his techniques. Remember Hokuto Shin ken is a a whole system not just head pressure point bursting attacks.

Musou tensei is supposed to be the form attained when one achieves nil-thought. Consider that Toki told Kenshiro that he could only beat Raoh if he was able to beat Lynn, though achieveing purity of thought is better.

Also, in Musou tensei, Kenshiro not only copies the moves, but can correspond with the souls of deceased fighters, esp. the ones that matter to him, which is why he could follow Toki and Rei's movements.
