  • I've been (sporadically) home re-habing after a car crash 2 years ago. Ashamed to say would probably have healed faster if I'd exercised more. I was put off by a local chiropractor who, when I told him I'd need to go for another MRI (?) - my two top shoulder nerves were in dispute by three separate hospitals as to whether they'd been permanently damaged or not - asked 'Why? Waste of time/money) ?! I'm assuming he meant after exercise, if I still couldn't raise my arm? Better than before, but ...

  • I was in acute pain for two and a half days with a shoulder/rotator cuff problem. Yesterday I found this and did the pendulum swinging. Within minutes, I noticed that the sharp pain was gone. This really helped--thanks!

  • pendulumlive sent me here

  • will this exercise increase subacromial space?

  • im in my 4 weeks of broken left clavicle and my doctor instructed me this exercise. is this a good exercise

  • looks good, i try it!

  • Very informative video.

Metriks' FCE software allows the healthcare professional to objectively quantify and report on a person's functional abilities.

  • Well, if u guys as physical therapists can't agree, I'm thinkin of passing on this exercise altogether. thnks anyway.

  • I hurt my shoulder at wrestling practice about a week ago. some one dropped there body weight on my extended arm. The pain was bad but not extreme and it only lasted about thirty seconds. It felt a little stiff the following day, but not too bad. I can rotate my arm in every direction with no pain, but every so often I move my arm and out of no where I get a quick sharp pain in the joint. Is this a serious issue or can I return to wrestling?

  • cervelo58-Thanks for your feedback. 3 days after my surgery of 03/03/11, I began doing pendulum exercises for 10 mins. 3Xs a day. I just dangled my arm and rotated my shoulder moves, clock & counter, using judgement, not widening the circle if painful. Today, in researching proper pendulum, saw mixed messages. 3 PT, says to swing/rock the entire shoulder & upper body. Then I saw video by Dr. David Oster who says to keep the back and chest still, allowing only the shoulder to move. Be Well,

  • Back and chest are not to move as this PT is doing.

All work is to be done by the shoulder and not being swayed by the body per MDs.

  • @vivrospetjon No, I disagree. The body momentum imparts motion to the shoulder glenohumeral joint passively and is appropriate for the acute post-surgical stage when all other motions (active and passive joint ROM) are typically painful.

If only the shoulder moves and the body is stable then, logically, the motion must be generating from the glenohumeral joint and muscles, actively. This is liable to be painful or may lead to a generally irrtitated state.

  • per which MDs? give me their names so I will never go to them. This is exercise intended to promote gravity assisted joint distraction as well as slight passive ROM mainly with post surgical patients that SHOULD NOT be using their deltoid or rotator cuff muscles. Anything BUT the shoulder should be doing the work to make the Shoulder/involved UE move.

  • I ll try this and I might need more exercises to work on

    ThankYou Tim : )

  • this works excellent with some HEAVY DNB PENDULUM!

  • @cadaverock : i think hi is brilliant, why you watching fool, go away and get a hug somewhere!

  • Great channel! Besides Stuart Mcgill's work, who/what would your recommend in regards to rehab? Do you know of Craig Liebenson, and if so what is your take on his work?

  • Read Timothy Flynn, John Childs, Julie Fritz, Joshua Cleland.

Dr. Liebenson works with Stuart McGill but no, I don't have his book.

    Thank you for your comment.

    Tim

  • we must do this exercise after pain goes or we can do this for heal the soulder???plz replay

  • Thanks for the great video! My only question is how long should I be doing this daily? I'm at about 1.5 weeks after the dislocation. Thanks!

  • Hi again, DOing physio for right AC joint separation. Had it in a sling for duration of healing until pain went away. AFter being trained to focus on the wrist and forearm flexors I realize that I can barely hold on to the beans. When I do it right feels like Im holding hte beans with muscles of my right hip and leg. Do you think its a good idea to supplement this excercise with thera band excercises as well, or should I just try and hold the beans before I move on?

  • Thanks for example. I had read about pendulum shoulder exercises and helps to have a good video example.

  • I take it that doing pendulum exercise as a warmup suffices? My routine will consist of chins and base exercises (bench, squat, deadlift) but I'm rehabilitating now. So when I get well again I'm gonna warm up with pendulum and then perhaps work out the rotator cuffs properly after.

  • Dear joeysn7hvn,

Pedulums are a good exercise for the sub-acute (>48hrs) shoulder. There should be no pain.

  • how long after injury does one get to hold the beans ?

My P T'st did'nt mention any weight, even though i kinda like the idea..but i've been doing my pendulums wrong and not swinging the legs..i ask her tommorow, and ask if i can hang around...shoulder injury has been no fun,,thanx for the vid

  • pendulum ex's can be done without weight first, then you can progess it with weight (a 2 lb wt. is ideal)

  • I appreciate the advice TIm. Also, the video is great. Keep up the good work!

    God Bless.

  • I am a person with nerve damage in my right shoulder and I am seeking consulation with a Physical Therapist. If you could contact me I would appreciate it very much. I have a very limited range of motion and I desperately am seeking someone with an expert opinion.

    Thank you.

  • Dear phukUimfamous,

How long have you had the nerve damage? How did you injure yourself?

Nerves sometimes heal - the initial response predicts the ultimate response. In other words, if you get early return of function, say, some strength back in 2-4 weeks then you have a good chance of getting back most of your function.

You need a doctor and perhaps a physical therapist in your area to examine you.

    Regards,

    Tim
