This study's experimental procedure would also ended up depriving participants of REM sleep (dreams) which in an fMRI would resemble a waking state in the brain.
the study must only be examining short term sleep deprivation. Continued loss of sleep is known to result in irritability as well as a long list of negative mental and physical symptoms
This is a truly ignorant interpretation of scientific data. I'm going to use it in my university courses to teach my students how *not* to interpret scientific data. Briefly: (1) The "optimistic" people that the researchers identified were people who sleep fewer hours, but did *not* necessarily feel deprived of sleep. (2) There are at least hundreds of studies that have shown actual sleep deprivation to have a wide variety of negative health & behavioral consequences,
All I get from this is that you get bad att assessing an outcome of a situation if you're deprived of sleep. What does optimism have to do with anything? Is optimistic really the correct descriptive term, I'd much rather go with "shit". When I'm deprived of sleep I am usually quite shit. Yes, that sounds just about right.
@Frefflica optimism has everything to do with it because they scanned the areas in the brain that are responsible for optimism and cynicism specifically. you literally become more aware of positive outcomes than you do of negative ones, when you have less sleep.
I find I am better at selling credit cards and such when I work an early shift and have very little sleep under my belt. But under enough sleep, my body language is less optimistic and since body language is a big part of the sealing the deal, I don't do as well.
This is weird, After about 36 hours of no sleep, I experienced a near "spiritual awakening" and was incredibly optimistic, then I got really pissed off at EVERYTHING
this study is 100% true. when i'm sleep-deprived, i'm way more optimistic that i will fuck up anybody who messes with my tired, grumpy ass.
unfortunately, i'm a middle-class american. which means i'm perpetually sleep deprived; i'm too busy earning enough taxable income to support the plutocracy's tax cuts to actually contribute to economic growth, but thats ok, the outlook is great!
100% true, I'm much more active and optimistic, if i haven't slept a night! I always wondered why i'm more active when i haven't slept, now i know thanks!
When I first got insomnia I fell into a 6 mouth depression wasn't to optimistic.Plus how is not focusing on the negitive aspects of your life a good thing, sure it can be when things are out of your power to improve. But when I look at the negitive parts of my life it gives me motivation to improve them.I don't get better at guitar by not looking at my mistakes and saying I am awesome.
There's also a study which shows that sleep deprivation makes soldiers perform almost as if they're drunk. No doubt people will use this to say crap like "see, see! Science says one day chocolate is good, then bad the day after, haha!".
Yeah but being drunk may make you uncoordinated, being optimistic doesn't contradict the studies showing that uncoordinated movement is common among drunks.
i think students , and workers across the world can all atest to the fact that they feel cranky after they dont get much sleep. this is a bunch of crap.
sounds like a crappy study that revolves around the general I.Q. versus how the brain actually works while sleep deprived
most people hope or thing things will go their way, and being less able to comprehend their individual situations means they are more likey to think positively about their situation.
If an extremely intelligent individual or pessimist was sleep deprived it would have little to no effect on their general life outlook, aside from them being upset at being tired
Who carries out these studies and why are the resources not being used for something more worthwhile? Still waiting on that cure for cancer, eggheads. Bottom line, I can get little to no sleep at night and in the morning I am a grumpy bastard from hell until I get some coffee or a strong cup of tea. I'd wager that most people are the same. These scientists may have qualifications but I'd not trust most of them with the common sense to be able to sit the right way round on a fucking toilet.
LOL! This is the biggest lie I think I've heard. Being sleep deprived makes me depressed at everything and cry about everything. I'm sad and want to curl up into a ball and disappear. I basically have chronic depression when I sleep,
Sure, cause the last time I woke up after a 3 hour sleep, head pounding, reeking of Holsten, I thought to myself "gee wilikers, I bet it's gonna be a super swell day today!"
I've noticed that it's vaguely pointless to listen to these guys talk about anything other than politics. They're almost never correct on the science.
Ehh, I get less than 6 hours of sleep MOST of the time n i am not optimistic, n I hate spending my money on useless junk. I almost never spend money. I guess I'm just too cheap n responsible.
I am one of those people that needs their sleep and would likely die within 72 - 96 hours without sleep. Living on the low left end of the bell curve evolutionarily I envy those that require less and are sustained by the lower right of the bell curve. I wish I could occupy their territory and relocate them to mine. The lucky bastards, lol.
Seems like they must be talking about a short window of time, a couple of hours, where this may be the case after which the study is no longer applicable. I would like to see the exact definition of "optimistic" they are using since it is synonymous with words like trusting... which is synonymous with believing, confiding, credulous, gullible, innocent, naive, unquestioning, unsuspecting. Same reason why it is used for training, discipline and torture in the military amongst other places.
Well ... sample size of one here, but when I get sleep deprived, I revert to more automatic behaviour and thought processes. My ability to think my way through an issue or engage in any abstraction or induction is minimal. I just become a mindless machine. Give me sleep, I can figure things out and be more creative, connecting the dots, so to speak. Lack of sleep, I'm very unpleasant to be around. We are all unique pieces of work.
Mmmm I dunno if I believe this. I have had insomnia before and when that happens I start to panic and get upset that I can't sleep....when I'm very very tired though I for whatever reason find everything and anything hilarious lol.
I was VERRRRY skeptical at this at first, but I guess when you think about it as TOO optimistic then this makes sense as brain functions not working right.
this is definitely BS...over the long term sleeping less than you need to each night makes you more vulnerable to all sorts of stressors, makes anxiety harder to deal with, and depression more likely to set in.
I really think it can go both ways. If you're generally a pessemistic person, chances are sleep deprivation will enhance that negativity; likewise, if you're by default an optimistic person, sleep deprivation might enhance that positivity in your judgment. In short, whichever way we tend to lean, we will habitually lean; and if our judgment is clouded by lack of sleep, we'll most likely not be as perceptive to any contradictory evidence as we would be if we were thinking with more clarity.
@dhebert111 medical residency has changed laws about shifts to not exceed 30 consecutive hours because reserch found that a brain sleep deprived after 24 hours functions comparably to a brain with a blood alcohol level of 0.1. illegal to drive (0.08) yet legal to operate on someone. your giddyness when sleep deprived can probably be thought of the same uninhibited laughter that people can have when under the influence of alcohol...
@tyrannosaurusinf14 A lot of doctors use a drug called Provigil, it`s a non addictive safe drug, that lets you stay up for 40 or so hours without side effects. It doesnt make you jittery or anything like that, and if you do want to sleep while you are under the effects you are able to. It`s good for them because a lot of the time they have to drive home after a 30 hour shift and it saves lives.
This must be what affects Cenk. He is always way to optimistic about Democrats and the American system. He gets enough sleep to call out mouth breathing Republicans, but he does not get enough to slam Democrats. He has the false idea that they are wanting to do good, but are just bad at bargaining and are powerless in situations -- which is totally not true since they actually agree with the GOP on far more than they disagree. My recommendation: Cenk, get some f-ing sleep, bro.
@TheInquiringOne I said no one cares about your opinion, doesn't mean I'm not going to tell you that. Yes a new program that has always done partial news and partial pop culture "fluff" stories. If you don't like it move onto the next video. I happen to have fun responding to stupid comments such as yours, but you've turned out to be pretty boring with your A B C's with points you seem to be rather good. Don't worry I wont waste anymore of my life on you.
I've noticed that as an insomniac, when I have bad bouts and get almost no sleep, I stop caring about things I should car about. Money being one of them, and how I spend my money. And work. If I haven't slept at all, I say fuck it, and don't go to work. But then if I'm on maybe 2 hours of sleep or something I prefer not to drive. Rather not die going to work because my reaction time is so badly impaired, and I zone out.
This is bad pop psychology. We don't even know why we sleep - though the newest ideas may finally have a clue - sleep is the 2nd half of a daily digestion cycle. We wake and begin eating and digestion. Then during sleep we stop eating, and finish digesting using the digested food for growth and repair, then prepare waste out and wake and repeat.
@TomHendricksMusea ah, well, they want to talk about it because its interesting, but are unqualified to make those kinds of observations. give them a break, its the internet, and people like yourself can add a valuable 2 cents to help.
@TheInquiringOne You can have you opinion but no one cares. You don't go to a comedy show and then bitch that the guy told too many jokes. The show has never stuck to the serious stories so you're complaining for the sake of complaining. I never claimed anyone cared about my opinion. I'm not the one getting upset about the show following the same format it always has.
I have CFS and i'm physically unable to sleep. And im not optimistic at all. I'm rather sad or pessimistic. So i don't quite know how to feel about this study
@mathforphysics It doesn't look like they fit in somehow. I know what they're trying to do with Cenk away on MSNBC and everything, I think they just need to keep trying. Something about this is just off and it doesn't compare to the rawness and spontaneous quick wit Cenk has and the flow Ana brings to the show. These guys are like dry toast. They have the personality of a roof shingle! It's like new paint over old paint. You can tell the old paint was there. That's all I have to say.
@TheInquiringOne The Show isn't supposed to be all serious. They have always said that it's supposed to be half and half. Some people like these stories. If you aren't interested here's an idea DON'T WATCH THEM.
Lol how am I supposed to relate to this? I've been freaking depressed over all the school work I've been having and depriving myself of sleep for it. I think it's just bad wording. Sleep deprivation impairs your judgment, it doesn't make you more optimistic.
Complete bull. I was so sleep deprived a couple of weeks ago because of all this study and i have never been so unwell. I couldn't function and I became really sick. I'm 17 years old and I got shingles. Shingles substantially effects the older population and the doctor thought it was really weird I got it.
Horrible misrepresentation of the research, it's a short term effect that fades if sleep deprivation is chronic. Next time read the whole fucking study.
@disrxt - totally agree and not only that but they are totally misrepresenting what "positive outcome" means in this study. It has little to do with optimism and more to do with the inability to correctly identify (and stick to) effective strategies and possibly an disruption in the ability to learn from feedback after a period of sleep deprivation.
@disrxt agreed, having narcolepsy, i can assure you Ana, that being deprived of sleep does not lead to optimism. Perhaps with a few hours of extra sleep, you might be able to sit through reading the entire study. Sleep deprivation, Ana, leads to ppl experiencing the same effects of 2 many beers-'beer muscles', but only in the extremely short term.
I think increased optimism probably helped out ancestors feel comfortable enough to sleep at a time when a large carnivore might poke it's nose into your cave. Cause if you don't sleep, you'll die anyway.
How is it surprising that sleep deprivation causes lack of attentiveness? Being inattentive and negligent isn't really the same thing as being optimistic and cheerful. That's why there's so much inconsistency with these types of behavioral studies and what people's actual experiences are, in that they just arbitrarily label something as optimism to make it look like a new revelation instead of using scientific terms.
@dagrimmreepa I know... if by republicans you only mean their voting base than I will agree... but if you mean the actually party members which I think are complicit corporate sellout... then there's nothing to do with optimistic or not. :D
When I don't get a good night's sleep, I feel miserable all day and everything sucks. I can't imagine who wakes up exhausted thinking things are going great.
your optimistic because your too tired to disagree with anyone lol

I'm not the one getting upset about the show following the same format it always has.

what a shitty study!

I have CFS and i'm physically unable to sleep. And im not optimistic at all. I'm rather sad or pessimistic. So i don't quite know how to feel about this study
Hodepine6 11 months ago
If you're sleep deprived you're awake more and you can't spend as much when you're asleep.

Maybe this is why people stay at crappy unrewarding and overly stressful jobs forever.

I don't like the guy in the middle. I don't know why exactly. And Ana is more talented and intelligent than both of them.
mathforphysics 11 months ago 2
@mathforphysics It doesn't look like they fit in somehow. I know what they're trying to do with Cenk away on MSNBC and everything, I think they just need to keep trying. Something about this is just off and it doesn't compare to the rawness and spontaneous quick wit Cenk has and the flow Ana brings to the show. These guys are like dry toast. They have the personality of a roof shingle! It's like new paint over old paint. You can tell the old paint was there. That's all I have to say.
bostero1 11 months ago
@TheInquiringOne The Show isn't supposed to be all serious. They have always said that it's supposed to be half and half. Some people like these stories. If you aren't interested here's an idea DON'T WATCH THEM.
p.s. no one cares what you think.
toungetied98 11 months ago
the study was based around RISK, calling this "optimistic" give the meaning a to wide perimeters
marcarmstrong88 11 months ago
Sleep deprivation leads to poor judgement, which could err on the optimistic side. Hmm... not sure if that's optimism or delusion...

so optimism is lack of jdugement (induced for example by sleep deprevation)
but my anecodotal experience is totally the other way round - less sleep means less feeling of well being means less confidence

another stupid story.
sushanalone 11 months ago 2
Lol how am I supposed to relate to this? I've been freaking depressed over all the school work I've been having and depriving myself of sleep for it. I think it's just bad wording. Sleep deprivation impairs your judgment, it doesn't make you more optimistic.
Yamikaiba123 11 months ago 2
When you're sleep deprived you just care less about the outcome of your actions, I wouldn't call that "optimism".
weejockpoopongmcplop 11 months ago
old news.
there are drugs and vermin that do the same.
It has been used in therapy of clinically depressed.
first you get cranky but after a full night you get a high, it is "ment" to make you take more risk and power up short-term to resolve the situation.

So less sleep makes you NAÏVE and LESS RATIONAL.
More sleep makes you realistic and rational.
I prefer the last one.

That's silly.... It's not that one is more optimistic or not, you're just making decisions with less sleep leading to bad outcomes.

@disrxt good call
dasean120 11 months ago
@disrxt - totally agree and not only that but they are totally misrepresenting what "positive outcome" means in this study. It has little to do with optimism and more to do with the inability to correctly identify (and stick to) effective strategies and possibly an disruption in the ability to learn from feedback after a period of sleep deprivation.
maajikl 11 months ago
@disrxt agreed, having narcolepsy, i can assure you Ana, that being deprived of sleep does not lead to optimism. Perhaps with a few hours of extra sleep, you might be able to sit through reading the entire study. Sleep deprivation, Ana, leads to ppl experiencing the same effects of 2 many beers-'beer muscles', but only in the extremely short term.

jimmycrackedcorn226 11 months ago
Nonsense... It's not optimism if the worries are still there but you are just too tired to care.
I am OCD & Pessimistic & while sleep depraved, I am less agitated but only because I am too tired... not because the negative thoughts go away.

"Pessimist" is what optimists call realists.

These scientists need to talk to high school students. High school= sleep deprivation
FMradiogirl 11 months ago
I think increased optimism probably helped out ancestors feel comfortable enough to sleep at a time when a large carnivore might poke it's nose into your cave. Cause if you don't sleep, you'll die anyway.

Marijuana makes me optimistic...but then it wears off
Dahgrostabphri 11 months ago
How is it surprising that sleep deprivation causes lack of attentiveness? Being inattentive and negligent isn't really the same thing as being optimistic and cheerful. That's why there's so much inconsistency with these types of behavioral studies and what people's actual experiences are, in that they just arbitrarily label something as optimism to make it look like a new revelation instead of using scientific terms.

@BioCapsule I was referring to the part where Anna said that sleep deprivation screws up your ability to properly judge spending.
dagrimmreepa 11 months ago
@dagrimmreepa I know... if by republicans you only mean their voting base than I will agree... but if you mean the actually party members which I think are complicit corporate sellout... then there's nothing to do with optimistic or not. :D

@BioCapsule Haha, yeah, obviously the normal folk who vote for them... although I'm not sure if "normal" is the right word lol
