As a former USAF Air Defense Operator this guy from Popular Mechanics does not know what he's talking about. We were always training for threats that began in the U.S. including where aircraft crashed into buildings, and this was in 1975.

It is very important to remember that Popular mechanics is owned by the Hearst Company. William Randolph Hearst was known as the father of "yellow journalism".
