At that distance and the direction the ball was hit in (near his shoulder), he couldn't do any more than swing his arm with the intention of deflecting it (his arms were already low, he couldn't move his arms any faster than swinging them). It's not all to uncommon, it happens quick frequently in those close encounters.
It's not that bad but he does look like a hockey goalie tho. He tried to save it

Well, he didn't do anything wrong.
