James, in real life, sometimes we do stop in our tracks when the sun sets, a box does pop up in the air, and we go through this tremendous journey to accomplish something so simple and seemingly pointless in the end, and we look back at all of it, and just laugh.
Sure the pause is boring when going to night, but you can get more hearts out of it. This game is actually good, and anyone that goes against James is mostly just hobbing his balls.
Don't listen to the nerd, this is a good game despite it is THE BLACK SHEEP of the series much like how Super Mario Bros. 2, Zelda 2, Resident Evil 5, Knuckles Chaotix etc. are to their series. I liked this game since i was 8 years old because i loved the first game and beaten this one but yes the ending does suck and all. Glad they went back to the original formula with Castlevania 3.
If the annoying text box didn't come up, and there weren't fake tiles, and items weren't too expensive, and there wasn't such a long password, and there were more bosses and if dracula was a harder boss, this probably would've been a descent game.

It was hard in a way that gamers of today will never tolerate, and u have a point that some parts just sux! C2 is amazing and was a huge hit when it came out. My friends and I played it all the time. I never played C1 much because of it's difficulty. I know people who have never beaten it 25 years later. Simon's quest was a game that brought all of us together and when you beat it and get the best ending it's so satisfying.
@RohGamer C1 and 3 are just your typical linear action 2d scrollers and while incredibly fun just don't have the uniqueness and magic that SQ has. There is no other game like SQ.

@Billinois78 That's how the game forces you to build up skill. The difficulty goes up gradually and evens out if you grind a bunch. If you're dying constantly losing your hearts you just have to get better at the game and or stop making careless errors. Just figure out which enemies drop a whole one and do a little farming. Your max is 256 it doesn't take that long to max them out if you know where to go only 5 mins tops. One of the best spots is the right of the start in mansion 1.
I could never figure out what to do in this game when I was younger. Like I really would have known to equip a red crystal and crouch in a corner for 10 sec :\ ??? So I just gave it away and I see that I didn't miss out on anything but a poorly made nes game.

Most people that don't like zelda 2 only have one reason even if they say its not that one reason, and that's that they find it too hard or confusing. I happen to think its one of the best 'classic' zeldas there are.
There's a new patch for this game at romhacking (dot) com that fixes up this game pretty good. All the shitty false hints are now real hints and the transition from day to night is almost nonexisting. I can now say this game is...decent.
@DarthDeaTh0001 Of course, this was back in 2004, before James probably even thought about the literal "AVGN" :) They where stored until 2006. Granted, the quality isn't great, but they're like legends because they're the older episodes (Simon's Quest & Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde).
The biggest flaw in my opinion of this game (which AVGN has pointed out) is that unless you have a strategy guide or cheat code there is no possible way to beat the game. I mean, how else are you going to know to kneel at a wall with a red crystal for example.

@chicopapass Keep in mind this is one the very first AVGN episodes out there. First episodes always sound different compared to the more recent. Take a look at how Armake21 progressed. Or UrinatingTree (good comparison is to look at his Back to the Future III vs. one of the later Generic Reviews). Or PlayitBogart. Or even the LP mockers of retsupurae and ChipCheezsum. Very rarely will the early days sound the same because everyone gets more comfortable with their character.

In reality, AVGN loved Simon's Quest.. he constantly finds ways to put it down because it's an awesome game, but veered away from the original action scroller which he cared so much about. Like a child saying he/she hates his strict parent, but is only trying to live up to expectations. This game made you think (and use NP mag on occasion). So you see, James, Simon's Quest does love you, and it's ok to show your frustrations because it only made you the strong individual you are today!
Also he originally made this "review" as a joke for his friends that was never meant to be turned into a series. James should have sticked to film making he was pursuing and maybe he should have released this years later like today. James was never a reviewer and you can see how downhill the AVGN series quickly went as if it was one huge mistake (I think it's possible that James even secretly regrets the entire AVGN series which you can even see it in his later reviews) .

There's a new patch for this game at romhacking (dot) com that fixes up this game pretty good. All the shitty false hints are now real hints and the transition from day to night is almost nonexisting. I can now say this game is...decent.

@DarthDeaTh0001 Of course, this was back in 2004, before James probably even thought about the literal "AVGN" :) They where stored until 2006. Granted, the quality isn't great, but they're like legends because they're the older episodes (Simon's Quest & Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde).

The biggest flaw in my opinion of this game (which AVGN has pointed out) is that unless you have a strategy guide or cheat code there is no possible way to beat the game. I mean, how else are you going to know to kneel at a wall with a red crystal for example.

wow thats funny I always LOVED simons quest,..copuld never beat it but enjoyed using the cheat codes that gave you like EVERYthing (and yeah I STILL ould not beat it) but you know those games where you'll never beat to the point where you basically 'stop trying' but just enjoy playing as recreation and just playing the levels for pure enjoyment in fact you stop even EXPECTING or GOING for beating it you just play it to play it, some ppl do that with Mario but I can beat all those!

@chicopapass Keep in mind this is one the very first AVGN episodes out there. First episodes always sound different compared to the more recent. Take a look at how Armake21 progressed. Or UrinatingTree (good comparison is to look at his Back to the Future III vs. one of the later Generic Reviews). Or PlayitBogart. Or even the LP mockers of retsupurae and ChipCheezsum. Very rarely will the early days sound the same because everyone gets more comfortable with their character.

In reality, AVGN loved Simon's Quest.. he constantly finds ways to put it down because it's an awesome game, but veered away from the original action scroller which he cared so much about. Like a child saying he/she hates his strict parent, but is only trying to live up to expectations. This game made you think (and use NP mag on occasion). So you see, James, Simon's Quest does love you, and it's ok to show your frustrations because it only made you the strong individual you are today!

Also he originally made this "review" as a joke for his friends that was never meant to be turned into a series. James should have sticked to film making he was pursuing and maybe he should have released this years later like today. James was never a reviewer and you can see how downhill the AVGN series quickly went as if it was one huge mistake (I think it's possible that James even secretly regrets the entire AVGN series which you can even see it in his later reviews) .

@zonilo1 What you said about the review being a joke is true, but I don't agree with the rest of your comment. The series didn't quickly go downhill, it only started to go downhill in the last 20 or so episodes and it's not bad it's just not as good as it was. Also if he regrets making the series (which made him rich and famous) why did he take it a step further and begin production of a AVGN movie?

This game needs a remake. It's so flawed, and yet so classic... Almost every modern Castlevania game contains references to it, from the use of Dracula's organs in SotN and HoD, to Shanoa in OoE saying "I am the morning sun, come to vanquish this horrible night".
