Superb orchestra, and I love what the voices of Garrett, Palmer, Bottone and Richardson brought. Even Idle as Ko-Ko sings his role superbly well.
Growing up, this version ruined it for me - and by that, I mean it became a challenge just to enjoy any other production of the Mikado, knowing how sloppy they sounded in comparison to this version.
mmm, think the cast is a bit too classic bel canto setted to bring the lightness and cheek in this production sounds like they desperate try to get the "Black&White Minstrel Show"-feeling from the 60-ties, but are too much stuck in their Wagner experience. G&S should crack a smile though sound or act, this doesn't.
This really is the BEST version I have seen - I know it's not the "Patent" G & S Version But Dr Miller (The "Good " Doctor as Private Eye would have it) really has produced a reall classic and Eric Idle - whilst not the first person I would think of as Ko Ko is magnificent !
thanks for this! I still have the copy I taped off the TV, but it's been recopied and then transferred to DVD, so quality nbg! I refuse to buy US format for a UK prodcution, so you've saved me!
This production rocked! Not remotely Japanese, but somehow much more fitting to the characters and dialogue. And not to mention the voices were just fantastic - even Eic Idle held his own. I really enjoyed Felicity Palmer, Richard Argas, and Mark Richardson.
@AngedeMystere those aren't sailors they're what are called bell boys. they fetch and carry the baggage of the hotel customers. to and from the rooms.
I have to do a report on the Mikado.. I am suddenly interested now. :3

@vonnycav Found a version on Amazon. It's fuzzy VHS, roughly this quality you see here. But I adore it all the same.

I LOVE this production! It's so hilarious and a completely different take on the show! Loved Eric Idle as Ko-Ko.

Oh man, the expression on the sailors' faces when he sang the bit about "his Nancy on his knee . . . " So bad, but so funny. XD
