I owned a 76 Camaro LT Rally Sport in the early 1980's. Red w/ black hood and roof. Pretty car, but built like crap. The interior was junk. The door handles were weak, broke. The doors were long, heavy, and sagging on the hinges. The body flexed and made all sorts of bad noises. Could feel every pebble on the road. Weak rear end and tranny.
A pretty face, but shallow underneath. You'll need to replace pretty much everything if you intend to drag race it.
Whoo-whee!! Check those cheapo crappy interiors. GM has their act together so much more on the quality front these days. If they'd gotten it together in 1975 when they owned 55% of the US car market, they'd have never gone bankrupt, even with the sky-high legacy costs.

I'm not a GM "hater" because I owned a Grand National and a '94 S-10 SS and still remember them fondly, even though they were built like total crap. But dealing new Cavaliers and Luminas was a tough sell. They were awful, as were the Trailblazers. My friend at Toyota of Nashua across the street was selling Corollas and Camrys for almost sticker. But I will say the 94-96 Impala SS was awesome, and only $24k. Sold lots of those.

@franjoballs187 More like International Race Of Champions, a series of races that featured top drivers from around the world in similarly modified vehicles to make the race as close to skill as possible. The Chevy Camaro was used as the standard vehicle for IROC for a few years so they produced the IROC series for the market.
Well...actually the 1986 TPI 305 had 190hp. The carb had 170. I had the TPI. Changed the ugly three belt to the true '87 serpentine belt system....and WOW what a change. I got rid of the AC flapping around the engine. Added '89 dual fan setup, a much better exhaust, roller rockers and got rid of the stupid heat problem this car sucks for. Other than that, my car ran great and increased the mileage. I have run this car at high speeds over corners (at the track) and it glued to the road.
I bought an 86 IROC in 1989. It had the 305 with the 4bbl carb. What a dog it was......... that is until my uncle gutted the engine compartment and we dropped in a 396 out of a smashed Corvette. I loved pulling up to Mustangs, Firebirds and even Vettes and blowing them away.
Ugh that motor only had 170hp. Some of the 305s that year made 220hp. Blame the moron who bought that car off the lot, or the salesman who pushed him into it.
The Camaro, Mustang, and Firebird had their ups and downs, The Camaro Lost tons of power during the 70's and 80's, so did the Firebird. While the Mustang looked horrible in the 70's but still retained power, it almost went FWD in the 80's. I'm a GM guy, but I don't go flamin' on the other Mopars/Pony cars.
1979 and 1983 Camaros were not even in the same generation. The end of the second generations were the ugliest ever made, I don't care what anyone says, they were.
Their headlights made them look like a giant AMC Gremlin or Pacer. Nevermind, not just the headlights, their whole body looks like an AMC Pacer, just stretched out. First generation and Third Gen Camaros will probably always the best looking years, with the exception of the 91-92 and the early Third Gens, with the funky bumpers.

Actually the 1986 IROC-Z was the worst performer of the 1985-1990 IROCs... it had the smallest production cam. And also the only model with the ugly third brake light on top of the rear window. And for the fellas interested in getting an IROC, get the 5-speed and the TPI... they are the better performers, stay away from the TBI, they have about 60 HP less power.
in germany i've been looking to get one, and these models in decent conditions over here trade between 5 to some even 12 thousand euro, that is way more than "cash for clunkers" i believe, especially given the current dollar/euro exhchange rate. great cars, they need to live on, since they carry a lot of american automotve history,

A lot of them may very well end up in the crusher with his CARS plan going on, it's getting funded for another 2 billion dollars since the first billion worked very well for Chevy and the rest. Trade your old Camaro in and get $4500 to go toward a new car, most IROCs aren't worth 4500 so I'm sure a lot of people will indulge, when they could be restored or built up instead.

I think they made the camaro in canada. one of the reasons its cheaper to produce vehicles there is because of the state run health coverage. Last I heard every car GM produced had $1500 built into it for their past and present health care costs.

you can get older vettes for less than you might think...a few years back i sold a beautifully maintained 1987 with only 69k miles for $7,900...it was nearly perfect and it ran like top...the original owner was an old dude who drove it very gently and he kept it garaged...it handled much better than an iroc z....a lot of bang for the buck!

SemperFidelis, its like I said to begin with. The stock motors from the factory weren't all that great by modern standards. But if you made slight modifications, those old TPIs could put out 275 hp. thats as much as the LT1
but, taking you for your word, technology has advanced to the point where a v6 can beat a v8. but the new Camaro has a v6 that can make 304 hp, so pretty soon, you'll find your car to be as slow to it, as our 3rd gens are to yours.
my first car was an 87 z28. it was ok needed alot of work, i did alot of work to it and drove it for a year and a half but at 245,000+ miles i sold it for a grand. it took me from point a to point b in high skool though and it was all i could afford. now I have a much nicer 86 z28 and a fast as hell 89 firebird formula 350!
yeah mine is like 15-16 in the city, mines the 5.7 liter as well. there are MANY things you can do to up the gas mileage to those cars too. get rid of the AIR emissions, get headers, take off the cats, put a better muffler, put on a CAI , change some suspension parts and you should get 20-23 in the city.

Ugh that motor only had 170hp. Some of the 305s that year made 220hp. Blame the moron who bought that car off the lot, or the salesman who pushed him into it.

The Camaro, Mustang, and Firebird had their ups and downs, The Camaro Lost tons of power during the 70's and 80's, so did the Firebird. While the Mustang looked horrible in the 70's but still retained power, it almost went FWD in the 80's. I'm a GM guy, but I don't go flamin' on the other Mopars/Pony cars.

1979 and 1983 Camaros were not even in the same generation. The end of the second generations were the ugliest ever made, I don't care what anyone says, they were.
Their headlights made them look like a giant AMC Gremlin or Pacer. Nevermind, not just the headlights, their whole body looks like an AMC Pacer, just stretched out. First generation and Third Gen Camaros will probably always the best looking years, with the exception of the 91-92 and the early Third Gens, with the funky bumpers.

Actually the 1986 IROC-Z was the worst performer of the 1985-1990 IROCs... it had the smallest production cam. And also the only model with the ugly third brake light on top of the rear window. And for the fellas interested in getting an IROC, get the 5-speed and the TPI... they are the better performers, stay away from the TBI, they have about 60 HP less power.

A lot of them may very well end up in the crusher with his CARS plan going on, it's getting funded for another 2 billion dollars since the first billion worked very well for Chevy and the rest. Trade your old Camaro in and get $4500 to go toward a new car, most IROCs aren't worth 4500 so I'm sure a lot of people will indulge, when they could be restored or built up instead.

I think they made the camaro in canada. one of the reasons its cheaper to produce vehicles there is because of the state run health coverage. Last I heard every car GM produced had $1500 built into it for their past and present health care costs.

I have a 1988 IROC-Z28 with the 350 tpi 5.7 liter V-8 engine. Only 12,116 of those were made in 1988.

you can get older vettes for less than you might think...a few years back i sold a beautifully maintained 1987 with only 69k miles for $7,900...it was nearly perfect and it ran like top...the original owner was an old dude who drove it very gently and he kept it garaged...it handled much better than an iroc z....a lot of bang for the buck!

i got mine now with a rebuilt 355 and a 5 speed .... i like the especially from the rear part cause its true. cant get good traction in first and second though but once im in third 5.0's and japo's cant keep up. also im basically stock wih no more than 2k invested including purchase of car,,,so don't say your 9 sec car is better.. once you build your car so far it dont matter make and model..

SemperFidelis, its like I said to begin with. The stock motors from the factory weren't all that great by modern standards. But if you made slight modifications, those old TPIs could put out 275 hp. thats as much as the LT1
but, taking you for your word, technology has advanced to the point where a v6 can beat a v8. but the new Camaro has a v6 that can make 304 hp, so pretty soon, you'll find your car to be as slow to it, as our 3rd gens are to yours.

my first car was an 87 z28. it was ok needed alot of work, i did alot of work to it and drove it for a year and a half but at 245,000+ miles i sold it for a grand. it took me from point a to point b in high skool though and it was all i could afford. now I have a much nicer 86 z28 and a fast as hell 89 firebird formula 350!

yeah mine is like 15-16 in the city, mines the 5.7 liter as well. there are MANY things you can do to up the gas mileage to those cars too. get rid of the AIR emissions, get headers, take off the cats, put a better muffler, put on a CAI , change some suspension parts and you should get 20-23 in the city.
