Playing viola on this song is so BORING! All we play is B, D, E, and #F!!!! Oh well, great song, just boring playing it. Of course, not as boring as Rolling in the Deep on Cello, but......
Amazing...Toscanini is incredibly but seriously great as conductor & will remain a timeless legend!! His musicians are fantastically gifted too, those playing the violins, violas, bass's cellos, all the Strings, the tuba, trombone & windpipes...it's indeed an awesome experience to view this Magnificent & my fav Classical Creation so profoundly putting feelings & thoughts in art...thank you very kindly for uploading & sharing, qw3rtydud3 & YT...it is always sublime to listen to Genius Beethoven!
Anyone know when this was recorded? I remember listening to this on my parents records when I was a kid, it always struck me as having a very "restricted" sound, is it the technology here or does Toscanini prefer this kind of sound for Beethoven?
@LyricalAddict97 I play this to in Orchestra, it's not like the video though cause it's only Violins, Violas, Bass's and Cellos (what I play) when we play it but still!!! :D
Ya hey here is another thing. Quit the "I played this at bandcamp" BS, you did NOT play this at bandcamp, Not only is there not a damned group of bandcampers who could even get close to pulling it off technically, you wouldn't have any shot at an interpretation that made it sound anything else but something coming from a hurdy-gurdy!
@DramaticPretzelDog lol high five. I know there are a lot of really talented people out there but...most of them don't have the time or lack of intelligence to sputter about it on Youtube. All I can say is...if even a small fraction of the people who claim to be prodigiously talented on Youtube ever make anything of themselves we are in for a true effing Renaissance....>.> (short version: quit the "I am 5 yers old an Play the mephisto waltz backwords wit 1 handz" BS) Post a vid or shut it.
I played this song in orchestra.... not as good as these guys and shorter, but it is like the best song evaaa! I LOVED TO PLAY IT!! SOOOOO FUUUUNNNNNNN!!! :)
i had to play both the bass trombone and contrabassoon parts for my orchestra on tuba because they had neither and thought tuba would work... it does but tuba really isnt suited for beethovens work
i just listened to carlos kleiber's much praised recording of this and i have to say that this toscanini's recording is very impressive too. top class.
More visceral than Mozart: you can hear Beethoven's idealism and native pugnacity in nearly everything he wrote. Pastorale #6 ranks right up there with
the best in the elegant and precise category Beethoven's music was always
i was always curious listening to the 5th symphony. for me the 2nd, 3rd and 4th movements were all more enjoyable than the first, and yet the first always insists on being the most famous because of its "death knocking on the door" motif. the 4th really should be made the most well known.
Thanks for this. We're learning about Beethoven right now in my music class and the teacher's going to play a movement from this and we have to tell which it is. It's a lot easier to study when I can hear them separately. =)
Ahora estoy seguro que estas en el cielo componiendo obras para el Señor, gracias por haber pisado este planeta y dejarnos este lagado que vivirá hasta el final de los tiempos estoy seguro. Excepcional este cuarto movimiento.
ROCK ON! Thank you so much! I love being able to listen to all the movements in order. Too often the last three are left out on CDs as if they're not important. <3 :)

more balls less brains than mozart.
not as elegant and precise more
turgid but more audacious theme.
touches mozarts genius at 6:06
and follows thru after 7:30 with
musical theme uniquely beethoven
in a way mozart was too early to be.

This piece was originally written for the heroica finale (3rd)
But after Napoleon betrayed everyone, beethoven took this piece and put it in the 5fth.

yes because beethoven by this time was going deaf, so a perfect cadential motion eg chord V to I could proceed for much longer than expected!
