You do know how much it costs to live in SE Asia right? And yes, some of their shops are in poor conditions because they are old buildings and the countries have different codes to follow regarding maintenance, but others are just like factories here.

I also know that I can afford accomodations in Thailand for $2 (no aircon)-$10 or rent a 3 bedroom house in a gated community for $70/mth. I also know I can buy a FULL meal for 2 people on $3, or eat at a fancy floating river restaurant with a personal waitor for less than $25 (3 people, 3 courses plus booze).
I read an article some months ago about sweatshops in China and I was suprised how many Chinese people posted responses saying that it was a decent job and they could afford to support themselves on it. It also seemed that most of the workers were students. It seemed to me that it's just like shit jobs here. If you don't have the education or a good job, it sucks, but you don't hear people saying minimum wage factory jobs are sweatshops here.
Yeah boycott Nike shoes, make the demand for them plummet, then those poor "exploited" workers will lose their job and have to go back to begging and or another job that was much worse and paid less.
Boycott Nike... then there will be less orders for shoes so those sweatshops will go out of business, then all those people working in bad conditions for $2.46 per day will now have no income and no means to buy food.
(by the way...the world bank says that 60% of the world lives on less than $2 per day. So they are actually making a little bit more.
why should sweatshops go out of business? if the big bosses and all the people making profit with them accepted to reduce their incomes, and improve working conditions in the sweatshops that would then become decent factories,the jobs would still be there, the workers could be paid $10 a day (or more), and India , Bengladesh, vietnam and the others would still be competitive. people there would NOT be starving AND they would live decently.

why should sweatshops go out of business? if the big bosses and all the people making profit with them accepted to reduce their incomes, and improve working conditions in the sweatshops that would then become decent factories,the jobs would still be there, the workers could be paid $10 a day (or more), and India , Bengladesh, vietnam and the others would still be competitive. people there would NOT be starving AND they would live decently.

it's not about that... Look up the benefits American Apparel gives it's "sweatshop" workers. They've got good jobs, by OUR standards. Then look at Nike's. It's disgusting. Execs and CEOs are living the high life because they're paying Asian peasants just enough to keep them alive and working.
