MacPlay had made a Mac OS 7 port of Duke3D back in 1997 or late 1996
So far no one had uploaded gameplay of that version due to the ports of the game overshadowing the originals, and the ports where originally to let users with any of the NT family OS's run Duke3D without the problems that occur with NTVDM. Unless the original Mac version doesn't work on OS X.
Someone had uploaded the Mac verison of the Grabbag music from that port and its better then the DOS MIDI version
@luvtrails not at all. Spriting wasn't in 3D and enemies always face you, easier, and I'm pretty sure wolf3D had more levels, not to even mention Spear of Destiny and its mission packs.
They made some improvements, the music and sound effects got a nice boost. Some of the graphical improvements are nice... but why on earth would they remove the multiple directions the enemies could face? The enemies always looking in your direction possibly killed what could have been one of the better ports of this game.
@drawingdude267 Well you don't have to waste ammo. You could always just stab the dogs with the knife. In fact there's more reason to do so in the original thanks to the lack of backpacks.
Well it was launched in 1994 by the time Doom was released and I think 2 years before Doom 2. Wolfenstein was released years before the mac version in PC.
To make it simple look at a game like Halo 2 it was released in 2005 and Halo 3 in 2007, the graphics are very diferent.
Truly, the sound was far superior. But also keep in mind that the DOS version had more features, and 8 directional enemy sprites. However, I have to admit the MAC version is really great. Just Wolfenstein on all consoles are great.
Oh, and it's also a big disappointment that they've changed the hilarious pseudo-German bad-guy noises from the PC game... I particularly miss the SS guards' "MEIN LEBEN!!"
One reason is that it's the demo, i bet this was released a time before the real game. Also when i played it last (haven't had a mac in many years...) it had both flamethrower and rocket launcher. (Yes, by cheats HAMBURGER if i remember correctly)
Mac version > Windows version IMO
Also @ChalkiePerfect I believe final release had that voice, if not go find yourself a better version. :)
You sneaked up on them? Seriously, I do not think this game was going to be the first Splinter Cell, more than an arcade-FPS. I like the WAV-sounds, the Ahh when picking up a Medikit and the very well sampled voices.
Looks and feels worse than the original, PC version. It has fewer and mixed levels, mixes Spear of Destiny bosses with originals, all people look at you and can't be sneaked upon, items make the same sounds. Ignore the improved graphics.
I just played the SNES version. It sucks. The swastikas are blue crosses, the Hitler portraits have the moustache and swastika removed, the soldiers speak English and don't bleed, the dogs are giant rats and Mecha-Hitler is replaced with the "Staatmeister" ("Countrymaster"), which is just the MH character model with the moustache and swastika removed. The only thing that remains is the blood on BJ's face.
I still think this is the version that John Carmack should of ported to the iPhone, instead of the original PC release (though ironically, like the Jaguar version, the treausre just adds to health since like it, there's no score). I first played it on a old 386 but obviously the later versions (3DO, Jaguar, this Mac version) had much better visuals, music, sounds, etc. than the original and IMO would of made for a better port (especially since theirs allot of Mac owners who have an iPhone)
The iPhone port is based on the PC code, as it has the PC features, such as patrolling enemies, and the ability to sneak up on guards, not to mention the PC version sounds. The newest version has the Mac version textures, but not the Mac sprites.
If you use WolfGL for Windows xp, you can download the high-resolution textures from the Mac-version to replace the old EGA-textures. Looks very nice.
The music and sound is definitely why the Mac version was better! The visuals and audio bring me back to the days I had played the very same demo on the Macintosh IIvi.
The PC people were definitely missing out on BETTER ports of popular games, back in the day. Listening to the PC/DOS version of games like Dark Forces, made me feel pity for the users...
Oh OK I will accept your invitation. Just send me a message with your e-mail adress and I will send you the music. I have a video here on Youtube with the music on it.
mmmmmmm this game needs an fg42, shotgun, and keep the mp 40 but in my opinion change the chain gun to a Thompson with a 200 round drum mag. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Probably not, as it can't recognize all the Macintosh extensions, such as .sit or .app, that sort of thing. I actually have an iMac but the OS I have (Leopard) doesn't support Classic (Which can run PowerPC applications on Intel computers) :(
I think they mean that in the Mac version, the enemies are always looking at you, and in the PC version, you can sneak up on them and see them from eight different directions.
The mac version of this wolfenstein 3d game is similiar to the snes version in some ways. The first 3 levels you see in this video is shown in the snes version as well but there were a few differences with the snes version compared to the mac version. The music and sounds were different and the graphics look a lot better in the mac version than the snes version. The wall textures were kind of fuzzy in the snes version compared to the other systems that you can play wolfenstein 3d.
Does anyone think we will see and hear mac's scenario called "Projekt Zerstorer" on this site at anytime? Does anyone of you people know that wolfenstein 3d scenario for the macintosh?
yep i know it it's by Laz the creator of the best recreation of Wolfenstein (in my opinion), WolfenDOOM. I don't have mac, but these scenarios by Laz are so cool.
On top of that, there's a 4th encounter aka Commercial Edition, which includes the 30 2nd Encounter Levels and the original 60 PC Levels from the 3rd. The 3DO version is the same as the 4th Encounter, but has CD-quality music.
hey spdmnd, thank you for posting this. i used to play this all the time when i was little at my grandma's house (she had an old mac), so in a weird way, this brought back a lot of memories lol. thanks again.
No, but if you go to the Wolfenstein 3D Dome and download DOSBox, there's a mod called Mac-enstein 3D Second Encounter, which is a faithful emulation of this version using the PC version's source code.
Great vid! I emulated this on Basilisk (I have no Mac, so that's why I got a 3DO and the game, much cheaper). It kept locking up on me. Very fun game. Thanks for posting this.
The best way to achieve this without a Mac is to use an Emulator, Basilisk II, or even better, SheepShaver. I don't think there is a program for extracting the music directly, so you'll have to play or cheat your way through the game and use some recording application to get all the tracks.
Using an iMac G3 with an audio cable hooked up my XP Laptop to play the game, I decided to take it upon myself to try to make a rip of the 7 non-redundant tracks.
I got the tracks from the Title/Intermission (from the 3DO version I recorded, but the title for Mac/3DO are the same), 1-1, 1-3, 2-1, 2-2, 2-3 and 2-4 recorded in a decent fashion.
i do not like wen the dog dies its listen like the reale wolrd and wolfengod lokes like a gay!!!

COOL MAN!!
"1-1, 1-3, 2-1, 2-2, 2-3 and 2-4 recorded in a decent fashion. "
that means you recorded the other level's songs? not just the title?
can you upload it to youtube?
thanks
